Our club can’t catch a break can it. Of all the luck, it’s always us. An off season drama every off season since 2015. You don’t have to be angry about it (I’m not) but your head is in the sand if you think the club aren’t unprofessional. The CEO can’t even be bothered dressing and grooming himself for God’s sake. But it’s the players fault. I don’t think so.

Two negs to this post shows we are still in denial.

Definitely the answer is somewhere in the middle of "this club is unprofessional" and "this player is greedy", but I'd say it's skewed more towards the former.

You don't see the problem in Aloiai's actions? Or Matterson's?

The club being unprofessional (which at times I do too believe they are,) doesn't excuse that, and doesn't mean that the club or fans shouldn't feel hard done by when a player tries to weasel out of a contract early.


I think all parties could handle things better. You have to wonder why are we always the club that this happens to? The time has to come where we entertain the idea that we are part of the problem.

A few years ago a journo said we didn't have "smart operators" running the club. As much as I can't stand the bloke, I have a feeling he was right.

You know what that means right ? We don’t have people who will grease managers palms . Eg. If you sign this guy , you can get this amazing guy . Like for example ... if you let Fonua Blake go to the warriors I will deliver josh Aloiai . Hypothetically that is ........

Management are looking like the NRL equivalent of a park footy side right now.

Lee Hagipantelis needs to shut up and stick to chasing ambulances rather than offering a public commentary on the Aloiai situation.

Aloiai has performed for us and deserves some respect.

Either upgrade the bloke's contract or do a deal quietly and let him leave if someone can show us the money.

Turning it into a public drama does the club no favours.

I would definitely say the club didn’t bring this into the public arena and the following words from our chairman hopefully confirm we are no longer the door mats of the NRL

Also its time for PVL to step up and tell clubs and players that a contacts is a contract and must be honoured by both parties and any club
trying to entice a player to break a contract will suffer a SC penalty to the amount of the deal until then clubs will continue on because they can knowing nothing can happen

So to come back to the original post of the thread, it now looks by 'refusing to negotiate with him', we were actually refusing to negotiate an early release. Good on the club.

The nrl needs to get tough on these bloody player managers. As Nathan Brown said, you can t sign players on good value contracts anymore.

As soon as their agents realise there is a better offer around, they start agitating with all this player welfare rubbish.

And how is Tyrone Smith's form? Gets afb to walk out on compassionate grounds and conveniently lands an extendedeydeal worth more. Then fixes Manly up with a replacement, who happens to also get an extended and upgraded deal. It's why so many players are in dispute or changing their managers.

Every one of these compassionate releases had resulted in a pay rise. Matterson, afb, JAC, now alioai. No-one ever seems to take a pay cut for their mental well being.

I don't know how, but the nrl need to get these agents under control.

Maybe they need to scrap the early release completely out of the game? If you have a contract, both club and player honour it. If a player needs a release for compassionate grounds, they can take time out of the game without pay.

In the NBA etc, clubs literally own the rights to players and can trade them wherever they like.

Makes me respect Gorden Tallis a little more. He didn't have many kind words for St George back in the day, but at least he had the balls and morals to sit out his contract.

Josh A is offered silly money by Manly, but the catch is to get this silly money he needs a release from his current deal. Most players would be doing the same as Josh A and asking for a release, because there is no way the club will come even close to that offer. In saying the above, you don’t bad mouth your current employer. You get your management to try and brokerage deal that is a win win for both parties.
It would appear that big Josh has backed himself into a corner that he may have trouble getting out of. Also his actions will not go down very well at NRL HQ

If found out to be guilty of doing so, a player and/or his agent can be suspended league wide for a period of time & an organisation will lose draft picks plus fined. It's a way of keeping the integrity of the league with binding contracts. If a player asks for a release of his contract, they lose their signing bonus plus the remainder of their contract, some signing bonuses are quite large if they are an elite player.

The NRL might learn a bit about contractual obligations from the NFL.

Is he better than Mika , last year definitely , but Mika showed some much in 2019 . And finally is he better than Stefano . Who knows , but the raps on Stefano were never ever on Josh , not that that means anything .

I think he was our best middle forward last year by a fair margin and will be a pretty big loss. But he's not worth what Manly are reportedly paying him.

NFLplayers are contracted directly with the NFL and they have a draft. Very different and I cant see the Players Association agreeing to either of those changes.
