Guys,
I’ve been sitting on some info for about 5-6 weeks. I’ve never told you guys, but I count Josh Aloiai as one of my closest friends, we speak in some form basically every day. In September he texted me about his excitement of starting negotiations to extend his stay at WT. He was excited and felt that in the next 2-3 seasons he could develop into a real leader at the Club. Leaving the WT never entered his mind.

The first offer Josh received for 2022 is only slightly more than his current deal. He was disappointed at the offer because he would be 27 in 2022 and getting to the peak of his powers. He rejected the offer, Adam Hartigan came back to him with another offer which was approx 10% more than his current deal and gave Josh a 24hr deadline to accept this offer. To put it lightly, Josh was devastated, he knows that when a Club issues a deadline to a player, especially when the offer was way below expectations shows a lack of appreciation and value as a player and as a human. He is married and recently became a Dad, he deserved more than 24hrs to discuss these terms with his Wife.

The Club let these negotiations stall until November and now other Clubs have shown substantial interest. In 2019 Josh played with a broken hand until he had a part of a rib inserted into his hand which now acts as a hand muscle. Every game this year he played with rib damage which required needles EVERY game.
He gives his all every time he sets foot on the field, but these negotiations have turned him off the Club deluxe. I cringed when I saw a few post that this is about money. It isn’t, if it was he would’ve left 2 years ago, he sacrificed 50k to re-sign with us then.
This is why we never improve as a Club, because we have another player who will play the prime of his career at another Club. As a fan, I don’t want him to leave, as a friend, I know I can’t expect him to stay.
Their handling of this has been woeful. They’ve lost a kid, who 6 weeks ago, would never have ever contemplated or considered playing for another side.

If this is true, and i've no reason to doubt you, the that's embarrassing on the clubs part. No wonder we struggle to sign player when this is the level of engagement that we have during negotiations.

Imagine giving your best forward a 24hr deadline ?

I saw the correspondence, 100% it’s true. I was a Wests Tigers fan long before I became friends with Josh and I’ll be one whether he stays or goes. But this is how it played out and regardless of our friendship, it’s not a professional way of doing business

In my opinion he’s worth around 500K I’d be upset if the club were baulking at that. Too many data experts not enough footy brains.

Offer given with deadline was waaaaay below 500k

Disappointing

I'm definitely not doubting you. It's very disappointing to hear Hartigan dealing with negotiations this way. No wonder we always seem to be the laughing stock.

No way is he worth $500K. $350K absolute tops.

Problem is it’s impossible to know what he’ll be worth in 2022. Clearly he thinks he’ll have another good season and keep improving and wants money to reflect that. The club doesn’t want to take the risk that he might plateau, get injured etc and he’ll be worth way less than what he’s getting paid.

The other problem is that other clubs don’t care and will take the risk while we won’t and it will cost us players. They need to have a proper talk to josh about it not this apparent one day deadline - which seems like an exaggeration to me. Can’t see a club doing that to a player they want to keep.

Aloia on 500 plus Tamou on 350 is 850 starting props in total, that’s low. Problem is ol Rusty and his gimpy feet

Hopefully josh can talk to Adam and Madge about it all and something can get resolved. Just don’t see why they would give ANY player 24 hours to sign a deal especially one that’s not actually happening for another year. Just makes no sense and don’t see that happening. Not saying you’re lying but it just seems very very strange

Josh needs to realise one good season doesn’t make him a world class forward who should be getting huge money. A 10% upgrade from one good season seems pretty reasonable to me

Clearly Madge and hartigan aren’t going to pay players more than they’re worth and won’t even bother talking about it with the players, it’s a take it or leave it type deal.

There is no way to sugar coat this one....you don't treat a bloke like Josh, who is a legit club man, this way.

Madge did none of the main recruiting at Souths. Hartigan was an absolute no one at the Roosters ....do you really think anyone other than Politis and Robinson did their recruiting?

We have serious issues that need to be addressed in terms of retention and recruitment. I admire fans like you who only want to see good, but there comes a time when we need to realise stuff is wrong.

I have a mate who has been involved with the club and sponsored it for decades who basically got auto replies on emails and never assisted for ages and now is giving up.

You don't treat people like this and expect loyalty back.

Regardless of value, you don't treat a bloke who busted his butt all year for us like this also . One of the only ones who did.

Well said.

Spot on.

If this is true this is the sort of stuff that really turns prospective players away. It's the sort of stuff that agents and players will ask about when they consider signing with you. You can say that we're drawing a line in the sand but this was not the guy to do it with nor the way to handle it, if true. Quite unbelievable.

I agree with you totally. It was unnecessary but even worse it was disrespectful. If he didn’t love the Club so much he wouldn’t be so hurt or offended. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you he was devastated by it

He’s worth more than any other forward we have at this point in time.

He is, that doesn’t mean he’s worth $700k a season though. I will be sad if we lose him he’s one of my favourites

Sure but it also doesn't sound like he expected 700k or close to it and wouldn't have to entertain it if the club had shown some empathy and consideration.

Just to clarify I’m not agreeing with how blunt they were with Josh (if that’s what happened) I can just understand their reluctance to overpay players - he’s not worth the money manly want to pay him at the moment. Maybe in two years he will he maybe he won’t who knows.

He’s worth more than any other forward we have at this point in time.

He is, that doesn’t mean he’s worth $700k a season though. I will be sad if we lose him he’s one of my favourites

700k is reserved for Papalli and Junior Paulo I reckon. His expectations are nowhere near that

Maybe @The_POM knows something about it and can enlighten us. The other day they seemed to think negotiations were going well and he was close to extending. That might’ve just been from the clubs side though

I agree. When I saw The Poms post I was shocked. Because I knew this round of negotiations was far from a formality

I agree with you totally. It was unnecessary but even worse it was disrespectful. If he didn’t love the Club so much he wouldn’t be so hurt or offended. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you he was devastated by it

A bit stunned by today's events. Very hard to understand from the outside looking in and without all the information - but got to say very disappointed for Josh. Hope something can be resolved.

If you were his friend you wouldn't put his business out like that in public. 10% upgrade is huge In footy speak. 1 decent season doesn't make you a premier forward. Samoan international yeah, Keaon Koloamatangi has shown more promise with a quarter of the budget. He's a Burwood boy too.

10% increase when you’re on a modest contract? Going into the prime of your career?
I’m not gonna argue my friendship with him

Thank you for sharing this insight, it’s interesting that we give the elite guys months to make decisions but club stalwarts much less.

I’m only mentioning it because of today’s news about McIntyre. There has to be some sort of disconnect between Management and Coach because Josh has always had a great relationship with Madge. Maybe Hartigan is realising when you’re not at the Chooks, things work differently

Hey mate , can I ask a question ? I believe you , so I’m going to ask , why doesn’t Josh just prove it this year ? I get he has a young family and needs his future secured , but seriously , most on here in the lockdown period were saying “who cares “ . I didn’t agree , but , that was the common sentiment about josh . I was stoked he took the step up this year , But he’s hardly been a world beater prior to this . I get your point , but I don’t think it’s disloyalty , considering how average we’ve been for so long .

His contract is modest, 10% is measly. And after November 1 he realised how much other clubs valued him

If other clubs wants to pay overs for him clearly tigers won’t stand in his way. They’ve been pretty set on not giving guys more then they’re worth

If Josh was that upset about it he should talk to the club about it I’m sure they didn’t mean to upset him, Madge is obviously a big fan of his but he’s had a lot of injury issues and only 1 good season can’t expect too much

Geez its clear he isn’t being offered market value or even shown some respect to think about things.

Lets break this down. His current deal is 50k a season less than what he was offered before. We offered 10% on what he earns....He isn’t earning market value for a starting prop and I have no doubts at least 4-5 clubs would be circling him. He is a quality prop, not the best in the world but he is nrl quality & in the top half as well.

Our mgmt are absolutely crap at the moment. We are chasing shiny objects and forgetting about keeping talent & our brand within an already crap market place.

Guys,
I’ve been sitting on some info for about 5-6 weeks.

Does Josh Aloiai have a manager?

Physically, Josh has given his all here. The 24hr deadline crushed him but because negotiations dragged, November 1 passed and more than one Club showed immediate interest. Perfect storm for a disillusioned guy
