Cleary something’s wrong with management is multiple players every year run to the media to make us look bad and push for releases. It happens to us more than ANYONE. We need to get rid of all the board and everyone else and start over

Does it happen to us more? There are two instances I can think of and they happen to be best mates as well - Matto and Aloiai. Who else agitated for a release? Moses? Different case as we w/d his contract.

AFB got a release from Manly, JAC asked for one from Storm, Frizell turned his back on Dragons, Holmes walked out on Cronulla; that's without even thinking about it too hard. Seems to happen too often in general.

Hey, stop bringing common sense into this off season shenanigans!

Here is the reality of the situation and how it really played out:

Josh and his agent met with the club to discuss an extension soon after the final round of the season. Josh indicated his intention to re-sign with the club as it was indicated that he would get an upgraded deal. While the club was working on the deal, Manly approached Joshs management and offered a 3 year deal worth $2 million starting next season.

The real issue is the way it has been handled from this point with false narratives pushed both on this forum and on social, whether that be from Josh or by third parties. Deadlines which were taken out of context and low ball offers from the club that did not happen to present a false narrative that the club was treating the player poorly.

The reality is simple, Josh was prepared to re-sign until Manly offered a huge contract which included 2021. Rather than just owning the fact that he change his mind and going back on his initial decision (which is fine, nothing was signed), a false narrative was pushed to make it seem like the club was treating the player poorly.

Always two sides to a story and this sounds much more like reality. We had the sympathy josh stories building up to this and now we know why. The club CANNOT role over like it did with matterson. How can manly be allowed to offer a contracted player a contract on the proviso he gets released. Surely the NRL hVe to step in here. $660k a year for Alioa would be as bad as packers contract. He has has half a good year since he’s been here.

Thanks. Still disappointing he's leaving.

Any news on potential targets for 2021?

This is why this club is improving, yet many on here (possibly Rothfield with 20 different accounts) refuse to accept.

Lee Hagipantelis - “In my view he has a contract with the Wests Tigers which he will fulfil in 2021 unless I can leverage a commercial advantage for the club. The days of players, or others, thinking that they can use the Wests Tigers as a stepping stone are over.”

if that doesn't give you a semi, then you arent a WT supporter.

HAHAH this makes me laugh. Have heard it all before.

"Commercial advantage", imagine how you'd feel if you were Aloiai.

If it's all indeed true and he wants to allegedly default on the contract, why would you feel anything for him?

He isn't the first player to do that to us this year. The question is why?

Players with 100 games under their belt are rare these days. Again, we are falling short somewhere where players don't want to be with us.

Someone has put a fat contract in front of him.

The Chairman has come out and said he wants to sign for 2022 and 2023 and it's apparently contingent on being released next year.

I used to buy into the whole "they don't have a long career to make money" but you know what, don't sign long term contracts if you don't want to be held to the terms. Sign a year on year or match by match contract. These guys NEVER lose out. They get paid out if the club wants them gone, or if they want out they are usually going somewhere they are going to be paid more so they are happy to forfeit their existing contract.

He wants a release, we need something in return.

If it's true he said he will never wear our jersey again, when he is contracted to us, that is a dog act.

I'd enjoy making him wear it. Order him to attend a WT promotional event, as he is under contract and obliged to do so, in our team colours. If he refuses, suspend him without pay, but retaining his contract so he can't go elsewhere.

It's probably not possible, probably not how things work, but it's what he deserves after this rubbish.

"working on the deal"

Here the thing - Why does it take us so long to create a deal? I create contracts for deals bigger than this for my job at work and it takes me a day to produce a draft, alongside other tasks. Between player to player, there aren't many variations and you can use that as a base just tweaking the variables.

We really, really stink with our speed of execution. There is no excuse. In fact, there should be drafts ready to go before we even talk to the player.

If we're going to grade our playing team on effort and speed, then we need to do the same with management. Currently, our management team are playing like the 2020 Broncos.

These things matter.

We had to even ask Storm to even talk to JAC about entertaining 2021 and Manly just throw it at him without asking us

Well he never got us on a roll to win games, he was another keeper IMO, but if he wants out and he is signed for next season, then he doesn't have to wear the WT's jersey, he can wear a Magpies jersey instead in reserves.

Yeah, if he refuses to play the club should make him sit out next year with no football. Don't release him. His contract was low enough that it won't be a huge impact.

Actions like this need to have impacting consequences

Lee on SEN now saying he will be pushing the NRL to ensure that players requesting releases on compassionate grounds cannot profit from the release and that their remuneration should remain the same for the remaining period on the defaulted contract.

I agree with him. Should generate support from all clubs.

If this constant defaulting on contracts stops it should arrest the rapid rate of increasing player salaries.

If he refuses to play, the club should be able to stand him down without pay.

The club should also fine him for bringing the club into disrepute. If you can fine a player for having too many beers and doing a nudie run on Mad Monday, surely you can fine them for publicly slagging the jersey.
