Alternate off Season Discussions

I grew up in Cabramatta but moved on further South West in 1980/81. My Mum and Dad lived there to the day they died, both having come here from Poland.

My Mother in Law who is 90 still lives there to this day on her own for the last 20 years since her husband passed away.

Back in the day the Cabramatta/Fairfield area was full of Italians, Poles and many other Europeans that came here to make a better life for themselves after various conflicts in their countries of origin.

The Serbians & Croatians were pretty much lumped together as being Jugoslavian which didn't impress them too much as they were always having punch ups around the place among themselves.

The British Migrant Hostel was next door to Cabramatta High School where I received my secondary education and back at that time was full of British migrants as the name of the Barracks type accommodation would suggest.

The 70's was the start of a totally different migrant intake which once again changed the make up of the area and made it what it is today.
Sweethearts Cabramatta and Marconi club were pumping during the Madonna days.

The 2 options of coloured pickle , I would love to know the real marinate , unreal addition to all the Lebanese chicken plates , I know it’s turnip was wondering who may have the real mix to produce them ,

You chuck a beetroot into the brine. Don't think you eat it (have never seen it served or eaten).

Gee, Sydney is good but slipping entertainment wise but Melbourne is a hard act to follow for food, bars, clubs pubs ,theater and shopping.

Go down at least a few times a year for above.

Ladies dress better too!

Can you name some must visits

💯 bit of culture won't harm anyone
Tony, they get buses full of well meaning folk from Cremorne and Avalon through Auburn every Saturday. To expose them to how the other half lives. Foodie tours, or some such crap. Some smart bloke is probably squeezing them for $75 a head. Their faces are pressed up against the bus windows in a combination of terror, amazement and confusion . . . as they gawk and point.
They take them to Giazentep, the old Turkish delight next door before it closed, Harkola, etc, etc. They buy up spices and ingredients that haven't yet migrated North of the Parramatta river. Put name tags on 'em, and everything. Don't need the ID's . . . you can pick their pale, bewildered faces a mile off.
I love enaging with them and watch the amazement on their faces when I speak proper English.
Yes mate, a bit of culture won't hurt anyone :ROFLMAO:

How much time have you got !
For sport/ food( what a combo) try
-Turf Sports Bar 131 Queen St City
-Anywhere in Fitzroy main street
-Sandbar on the Bay at Port Melbourne
-the Esplanade Hotel St Kilda
-all the major city theatres, depending on what’s on
-Southbank concourse ( Crown and others)
-South Melbourne markets
-Day trip to the Yarra Valley
Melbourne is very suburban so lots of good places around the place that come and go.
Lots to do, weather a bit suss, but overall very eclectic. Quite different to Sydney.
And the ladies do dress well down here.

McBurney road Cabra represent ☝️😆
We lived in Lovoni Street on the East side about half way between the Hume Hwy and the railway station.

The Mother in Law still lives in Alick street in Cabramatta West.

Know McBurney Road quite well.

Sadly Leichhardt died out. Was a mecca once even till 2010.

Sydney's really been smashed wkth lockout laws and lockdowns.

Not much doing these days.

Yeah for sure. Leicchardt and Balmain
was always pumping. Lockout laws
killed the CBD area. I was living in
Potts Point/Kings Cross when young
Thomas Kelly lost his life in the
'coward punch' attack. Saw the place
decline first hand. Junkies and street walkers after that. RIP Tom

Restaurant wise love Rare steakhouse, Waterfront. Stalicites on Lonsdale less formal. But food is everywhere. As a bars, loads of rooftop bars catering for different themes.

Use this as a guide.

Normally, we stay in CBD and cruise streets and shops daytime, coffee here coffee there taking note of little doors between shops which normally indicate access to a rooftop bar. Walking past food we decide where to eat that night and later try for drinks. At night one walks past a door with a bouncer or two......walk in and see if you like vibe and music. Elephant and Wheelbarrow pub on Bourke great on weekend's. Loads of bars Bourke st and Lonsdale st , Flinders lane. Strip club's King st.

And if you got any money left try Southgate strip leading to casino.

Charles Dickens underground pub awesome for watching sports from other states.

What year was that, 1964? Lol.
Auburn has changed so much..
The adjacent areas too, like Berala
and Lidcombe. Don't see a lot of
Anglos there anymore that's 4 sure.
Still a stronghold area though, as
you noted good people great food
Yea probably a bit of an exaggeration. I left Auburn in 1979 and there was a fair middle eastern population then. More recently though the Chinese have become major inhabitants.
