Arana Taumata

From the other side of the fence to clear this mess up:

Brisbane Broncos deny talking to league bad-boy Arana Taumata

July 22, 2009 Stunned Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak has denied clandestine talks aimed at snaring rugby league bad boy Arana Taumata as Darren Lockyer's five-eighth replacement for 2011.

Reports linked Brisbane to a secret tug of war with the Wests Tigers for Taumata's signature with speculation Lockyer would hang up his boots next year.

The report quoted an unnamed Tigers official saying the club was "livid" Brisbane were looking at Taumata.

Lockyer is believed to be close to signing a two-year deal which would keep him at the club until the end of 2011.

Henjak rubbished reports of any approach for Taumata, a player they sacked in 2006 who has since been axed by three other NRL clubs for disciplinary breaches.

Taumata, currently playing for Easts Tigers in the Queensland Cup, flies to Melbourne every week to perform community service after being found guilty of assault in May which led to the Storm tearing up his NRL contract.

"If Lockyer signs it will be for two years," said a disappointed Henjak.

"Arana is playing for our affiliate club (Easts) and we haven't even spoken to him about a contract.

"Something like that would have to be approved by our board because he has been let go from our club before because of disciplinary reasons."

Henjak, who brought Taumata over from New Zealand as a 15-year-old, said he'd had recently had coffee with him and the family he was staying with.

"They're really nice people. I put Arana with them when I first brought him over from New Zealand.

"They're a lovely family. They really care about the kid, probably one of the few people who do and I think they're really good for him.

"They asked me to come over and have a chat with him and we talked about life.

"Are we in a tug of war? No we're not.

"Have we talked to him about a contract? No we haven't.

Henjak has no doubts Taumata, who carved Brisbane up for the Bulldogs last year, could play.

"He can play footy but the rest of his life has to be in order," he said.

"Whether I want him back is not the issue, it's whether the board would take him back and I haven't broached that with them."

Taumata is living with former Easts committeeman and ex-Tigers coach Chris Tanzer, who took him in when he was just 15.

"Arana is very, very remorseful for the disappointment he's caused all the clubs involved, his parents and coaches," said Tanzer, a former Queensland junior team selector who's been involved with the likes of Karmichael Hunt and Greg Inglis.

"He's more mature and has a good understanding of why it all happened.

"He's off the grog, he recognises that was the catalyst to putting him in bad situations.

"I'd like to see him reach is potential as a human being first and then as a footballer and that's his focus at the moment."

Very fluffy article. I would not be surprised to see/hear that the Bronco's make a play at him.

I agree. And use all the hardship / needing guidance / family support / blah blah excuses to say why he should be able to stay in Brisbane.

He will be playing for the tigers 100% for the next 2 years. Article on the wide world of sports site that says his manager has said he will be playing for the tigers and has signed a contract to boot. hope he will be a great signing for the club and stays out of trouble.

I agree, it has got me gobsmacked that Pritchard hasn't been signed up. NSW State Cup representative, leading try scorer, representative 5/8\. I have watched this kid play this year and I would put him in front of Ayshford and Ryan.

Spot on jet a future star for the tigers so they better snap him up. Idont think the broncoes are looking at Taumata they are looking at barrba from the dogs he is one unhappy puppy

You would have to be kidding! Ahead of Ryan maybe, but Ayshford is one of the best young players we've got! He may have done well this year, but with players like Daniela, Brown and Tupou with first grade experience coming into the system, and youngsters such as Rogica developing well, I can't see him really making much of a play for first grade any time soon. In all honestly I'd have Meaney and Hanbury from Balmain ahead of Prichard as an outside back.

As a 5/8 option, if he can't get a go in the centres (let alone 5/8) in the State Cup, then he should never be considered an option. We have the likes of Lui, Dunley and Ayshford again well ahead of him in this position. If this report is correct, then Taumata would have to be ahead of him as well.

Pritchard has only played the last 2 games on the wing, under Sheens orders,he's played in the centres all season.sheens sees him as a future winger,,and as for him not being better than meaney and hanbury, youve got to be joking..Give your self an upper cut….NO SERIOUSLY....

OH and Matty 119, if you"ve been to any of the magpies game this year, you would know that Dunley is playing poorly, and im sure he"d be the first to admit that..

Ellis success whets appetite for Tigers
>
July 22, 2009 - 6:20PM
>
The success of Englishman Gareth Ellis in his first season in the NRL could spark a new wave of recruits to Australia from the Super League, according to Wests Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell.
>
McDonnell said the England international's progress with the Tigers this season had not gone unnoticed in the UK, with several players now expressing an interest in following his footsteps.
>
Bradford prop Sam Burgess, who at 20 is rated as one of the most promising talents in the English game, has said he wants to move to the NRL when his contract expires next year, and is a player firmly on McDonnell's radar.
>
"Gareth has probably been one of the best signings we have ever made," McDonnell told AAP.
>
"His professionalism and his attitude are top class and he is also a great role model for our youngsters, we have been delighted with him.
>
"Sam is also a player we like very much. I had a good chat with him out here during the World Cup and unfortunately he was injured and never got the chance to play.
>
"He is very interested in playing out here but I know Manly are also trying to sign him and with Steve Menzies playing at Bradford, it may be that his links with Manly make a difference."
>
With so many Australian players having made the switch to England over the years, McDonnell said the tide could soon turn.
>
"It is becoming harder to sign players here and you also have youngsters being attracted to rugby union so we need to look outside of the square," he said.
>
"With the dollar being in a good state at the moment and the tax laws changing in the UK, Australia is becoming a more desirable place to play for players and it would be great to see more of their top players like Gareth Ellis playing in the NRL."
>
**McDonnell also said reports claiming bad boy five-eighth Arana Taumata will head to Brisbane instead of honouring an agreement to join the Tigers were wide of the mark.\
\
Taumata, who has been sacked by four NRL clubs for a variety of misdemeanours, including assault, has signed a two-year deal with the Tigers for the 2010 season.\
\
However, reports have claimed Brisbane were in talks with the 20-year-old, who is playing in the Queensland Cup with Broncos feeder club Easts.\
\
"There is no problems and Arana will be here next year," McDonnell said.\
\
"We have not had to speak to Brisbane because there is nothing to discuss."\
\
Taumaga's manager Sam Ayoub told AAP the story was "complete crap" and said the New Zealand-born playmaker would "without doubt" be plying his trade in Sydney next season.**

100 k a year would probably suggest its a wests tigers contract. would like to see him at 5/8 or fullback. Very fast good foot work and pretty strong

If Arana is signed with the Magpies, doesnt that mean Brisbane have every right to chase him? I thought if a player is contracted in the State Cup they a free to persue offers from NRL clubs at anytime, but not other State Cup sides? Could be wrong.
