Balmain Leagues Club Receivership

Well said Knuckles - we are in this together - it is our club, nice of the NRL to help but not to overrule us.

We do not want any nasty decisions because we did not have our 4 votes.

We won't get too much help from the Chardonnay set in Balmain. Too busy watching the Swans and sipping.
Talking about the majority here.

If we can't help ourselves - no one else will. Elias has a lot to answer for and we certainly got Harry offside unfortunately because he is the only individual that could help us..

Wests Tigers chief Grant Mayer claims the joint-venture club is "not at risk" amid fresh fears the Balmain side of the joint-venture could fold.

The Balmain Tigers Leagues Club is expected to be placed into receivership on Wednesday after taking NSW Supreme Court action against Rozelle Village, a property developer attempting to transform the Tigers' Victoria Road headquarters.

The leagues club owes Rozelle Village approximately $8 million and has allegedly defaulted on a series of loans.

Justice Paul Brereton granted a 24-hour extension just as Rozelle Village was about to call in the auditors, but it appears to be a stay of execution.

Counsel for the leagues club, Robert Newlinds, SC, said the move could "potentially bring to an end an 108-year-old football club".

It also raises broader questions about the future of Wests Tigers, an uneasy alliance between the Balmain and Western Suburbs.

However, Mayer described the court case as being at "arm's length" from the NRL club.

"At this stage, there is nothing the Wests Tigers have to say regarding the situation," he said.

"It is a Balmain Leagues Club issue. Wests Tigers are represented on the board by Balmain Football Club, not the Balmain Leagues Club. Wests Tigers are not at risk."

The developments come at a delicate time given the factions were close to ratifying a historic corporate governance overhaul by the NRL.

Wests and Balmain agreed to a new model of seven directors – three of whom would be independent board members installed by the NRL.

The arrangement would mean the ARLC would cover Balmain's financial shortfall for the next two years but would lose its shares in the joint venture if it couldn't square the ledger within two years.

It's clear after Tuesday's events that will not be possible and that voting rights would also be lost, as there was no way of providing security against the money lent.

It was expected that the NRL would sign off on the new structure within a fortnight, although it's unclear if there will now be delays.

"The Wests Tigers are continuing to go through its governance reforms with the NRL and the two shareholders and we're confident of an outcome very shortly," Mayer said.

"We are completely isolated from the current court proceedings. Therefore to comment further would be irresponsible on my behalf.

"This is an arm's-length court case. We have no involvement with today's proceedings as it's a Balmain Leagues Club issue, not a Wests Tigers issue.

"I'm confident with the process we're going through with the NRL."

One of the safeguards in the deal with the NRL is that the Wests Tigers name will be retained.

While the NRL club will not be changed to Western Suburbs, there are fears the role of Balmain could be negligible.

Wests Ashfield Leagues club had previously sought control of the board in exchange for a $1 million cash injection to prevent Wests Tigers from becoming insolvent last year.

The failure of the leagues club development at Rozelle was one of the factors behind Balmain being burdened with a $9.5 million debt.

NRL boss Dave Smith has previously stated the new board structure could be a blueprint for how other clubs are run and other clubs have already had informal discussions with the league about their own models.

But fans of the Tigers – both the Balmain and Wests variety – will be concerned following the revelations.

Congratulations Leichhardt Council and the NIMBYs of Rozelle

The blood will be on their hands and their hands alone

And they will be the first to complain when the Tigers start cutting their ties to Leichardt and playing more games elsewhere

They won't have much of a say from the look of it. Bunch of prawn heads.

It will be sad day if Balmain go under and really puts doubt on the Wests Tigers medium to long term survival. I particularly don't like the idea of not having Balmains two votes on the board. If the Independants decided to get nasty, Balmain and Magpies directors could join together and vote them down 4-3\. But without Balmain, the Independants are in the drivers seat and could change the face off our club.

It's in everyone's interests for Balmain to survive and continue to contribute to the Wests Tigers.

How can they do that if Balmain don't have voting rights?

Balmain greats have vowed not to let the famous club die, as it emerged that the Tigers may have a private benefactor prepared to help keep them afloat.

Rozelle Village, a property developer attempting to develop the site of Balmain Leagues Club on Victoria Road, is attempting to appoint a receiver or voluntary administrator after alleging the club has defaulted on a series of loans, including one for $4.5 million.

If that were to occur, the future of the 1908 foundation club would be in severe doubt as it has struggled to pay its share of costs in the Wests Tigers joint venture since the closure of Balmain Leagues Club for the failed re-development.

However, Fairfax Media understands that a wealthy benefactor has told Balmain officials he would be willing to provide a letter of credit to ensure the survival of the Tigers as a stand-alone entity.

Should that fail, Balmain great Steve Roach said he and former teammates such as Wayne Pearce, Paul Sironen and Ben Elias would rally to help the club.

"We are a foundation club and if push comes to shove we will all have to get together and try to do something to save the Bamain Tigers," Roach said.

"We have got huge support so we won't let the joint die. I'd think that we would have had the greatest number of one-club players ever, and certainly when I was playing, so I am sure that Sirro and Junior and Benny and me will all get on board. We would do anything to help the club."

Former long-serving Balmain chairman John Chalk also insisted the Tigers would not die and said the club was fortunate to be able to call on famous supporters such as Dawn Fraser.

"We are not going to lie down, no way in the world," Chalk said. "This is not the end, there are so many high-profile people who will come out fighting to keep the club alive."

Since the closure of its Rozelle premises, Balmain Leagues Club has been operating at Sydney Markets and Five Dock and Chalk said both clubs were trading well.

"The [Sydney] Markets Tigers trades well, they made $1 million last year, the one at Five Dock holds its own so they are going good," he said. [Former Balmain Leagues Club chief executive] Danny Monk is back working a couple of days per week so the club is doing what it can."

However, Roach said it was essential that the leagues club at Rozelle be redeveloped so the Tigers could resume trading there.

"It depresses me when I drive past it so I would like to see whoever owns it now and the council come to some sort of agreement because the whole part of the deal was that the Balmain Tigers would get a new club," Roach said. "I wish they would come to some sort of compromise and all the parties would work together to understand that we need it there otherwise there won't be any Balmain Tigers.

"But we will do something about it or we will try. We won't just let it die. We have got to have some sort of semblence of a club, we have got the land there and the deal was that they would build units on top and we would get a new leagues club. I reckon common sense has got to prevail so we can keep trading. That is the only place we can get the money from."

I disagree…if developer goes into receivership uncle Harry can pick the site up for peanuts...he then Lobbys Baz to approve the DA and there is plenty of money in it for the Tigers and Meriton!...

Grant Mayer appears to be contradicting himself with two statements he has recently made. In his most recent statement he claims that the joint-venture club is "not at risk" amid fresh fears the Balmain side of the joint-venture could fold. In a statement only weeks previously he advised that Aaron Wood was to be our only marquee for 2015\. As far as I know Aaron Wood is already signed for 2015 so why did he make this statement. Is it because he already knew that the joint venture would be in dire financials strife in 2015?

Harry has a lot of pull with governments. If Harry thinks he can do the above he will. I have seen him buy many sites that appear not to be viable and then get large developments approved on them.

If only the club had gone to Harry when they first decided to develop none of this would of happened. However I would be willing to put some money in to save the Balmain Tigers football club (though not necessarily the leagues club). Perhaps if they sold shares

There appears to be a lot of Western Suburbs supporters around here who are related to Nostradamus….

15 yrs and people are still separating the supporter base. Guess some will just never be able to see us as one.

I have been a Balmain and Wests Tigers supporter for nearly 60 years and love both of my teams equally. Some of us are really hurting at the moment and we are taking flak on here from inconsiderate Western Suburbs supporters. Is the picture a little clearer for you now?

I'm sure if Western Suburbs were in the same situation, The Balmain fans would be calling for their heads. Although the joint venture has given us 1 title, we should play The Last Post as Balmain has no place in the NRL. They have sponged off Western Suburbs for to long and DESERVE to be punted. Go you Mighty Maggies!!!!
