Balmain Leagues Club

Of greater concern will be viability of the new establishment given the new order in Sydney these days.

Since the initial decision of WA to develop the Rozelle site much has changed since the lockdowns.

As everyone who lives in Sydney can see our city resembles the social scene of a city of 2 million. It's a bit of a ghost town compared to 2019.

On top of that.

1) Land and apartment values are sinking.

2 ) As anyone who has been to WA or clubland generally has noticed they have removed every second machine for spacing. Little entertainment or promotions. So revenues could be lower.

3) Other possible ideas like function centres, nightclubs are well down in patronage . Less business.

4) The development will be far more expensive due to increased costs for labour and materials due to recent inflation.

5) The original Balmain Leagues ran into problems due to the opening of the casino......in the 90s it was said that that's the place to play because the pokies pay. Star city is still there with problems of its own looking to pull custom from elsewhere.

6) Gambling and pokies are laterly on the nose with new regulations enacted and considered. Clubs need losers to make money from.

So the directors will need to proceed carefully to make sure it survives and thrives.

Otherwise it could bring us all down.

Having a place that offers good value food at reasonable prices is desperately needed in the area. Every pub is suddenly a hipster gastro pub. Good luck getting a dinner under $30.

The Star isn't a rival for the club anymore. The Star will be lucky to still be around in a few years time too.

That clown politis, is a smart man. He said if the clubs that are making money out of the pokies aren’t investing that money wisely. They will be dead in 10 years as people in the next gen won’t be gambling in clubs they will be doing it online. Hence why the cocks have been buying up properties at Bondi junction to rent out! He’s a weasel, but a smart one.

All true. Not sure who pays for the redevelopment though - thought that would be the property developer as part of the DA, not Wests - though could be wrong. Putting that aside, aim for the new leagues club really should be breaking even for first five+ years. Considering the demographics of the area, it’s going to need to focus on hospitality/food etc rather than pokies for revenue.

Luckily we’re no longer reliant on it to fund Wests Tigers. If it’s breaking even for first five years, look to grow from there. It will also produce benefits of keeping name alive in the area, hopefully increase junior participation etc

Quite ok with calling it Tigers Rozelle or Wests Tigers Rozelle. Like Wests Ashfield is fine, but then make it Wests Rozelle.
Mate, I’m an old Balmain fan from way, way back but any/all my comments are totally focused on moving forward and are not about nurturing the past.
I’m not suggesting it becomes a Balmain thing, just that common branding ( whatever it is) acts in pulling it all together and makes sense in this day and age. I’m comfortable with whatever name they decide on, just as long as it’s consistent.
We are the Wests Tigers, or Tigers for short. It just seems to me that is the symbol of our club, so use it.
Same as having all teams play as Wests Tigers and not Magpies etc.
One club , one dream imo.
I call BS - a lot of your posts are Balmain centric.

100% Its ok. This should never change
Why should it never change? If we’re serious about wanting to be a one club thing now, then we should be called Wests Tigers in NSW Cup. We’re called that in Flegg and then change it to Magpies for Cup then back to Wests Tigers for first grade. I understand not all clubs use their own team in lower grade but most NSW clubs do use their own team in Cup. IMO from Flegg onwards we should be Wests Tigers. That’ll probably change in the future sometime but if the club is serious about wanting to be just one club that’s how we need to do it. Balmain and Magpies can be in SG Ball and the other lower grades no problem, but if we’re looking at development it makes sense to have them under one name in Flegg upwards.

2 leagues clubs you mean? Well there will be two in the inner west if this happens. I don’t think it’s far fetched to imagine Wests Campbelltown or indeed Wests Ashfield opening a new club in the Narellan-Picton area. Every time I drive to Canberra there’s a new housing development going up! Those people should have the same rights to be decimated by pokies as the rest of the state.
Yeah but I meant have 2 leagues clubs called Wests Tigers leagues or something along those lines one based in the Inner West and the other in the MacArthur region.

Its all Wests run so why not? They should have a presence in every grade. (NRL excluded). Its still one club at the end of the day.

They do have a team in every grade apart from first grade and Flegg since Wests Tigers are in Flegg. And while Wests did merge to form Wests Tigers, it was a whole seperate club once and having a whole different club as our lower grade team IMO is not right to me. If our key is development, Flegg onwards we need to be only Wests Tigers the kids will play under one banner, one name the whole time. That’s how the success will start.
