Balmain Leagues Club

If Flemington does happen and it becomes the Weststigers club we certainly will be using it as we are In the catchment area and for me it would symbolise support for our footy club .The branding is the key here West’s and Balmain leagues mean nothing to me !

@Russell this seems to be the best way to get around the impass which is the current Balmain Leagues club financial difficulties , thanks for that Benny, if West’s wanted to get rid of the “ Balmain” brand, they could have done so before as they have been generous in their support of this entity , whether Balmain could have paid their NRL debt next year is another point ,however, if this is just a way to get rid of the current emblem on the jumper and replace it with a Magpie, then that would do me and many others I would think.

Is there going to be any postal voting?
I’m a Tigers perpetual member but live in Rockhampton so won’t be able to attend any members voting session.

I also assume that there won’t be any shopping precinct or multi-level apartments like was originally planned at Rozelle.

It would be the old building refurbished maybe?

@rex2ce That’s not going to happen , as you eluded that could of happened a year ago , keep an open mind... this is about strengthening the brand nothing else !

The current plan is still for the shopping precinct and multi-level apartments with the Tigers guaranteed space for the club!

@cqtiger There is going to be appartments ect and the leagues club will have the ground floor area only ..but who really knows ,the elephant in the room is the NSW governments acquisition of the site for tunnelling ect for the tunnel under the iron cove bridge ... all conjecture atm.

Ok thanks

@cqtiger we always receive a postal vote in yearly elections for club board members ,so I see no reason why you would not be able to proxy vote in such an important decision.

Balmain would die - but I would still have the memories.

So what would be the point of voting no?

That they don't get swallowed up and lose their identity.

They would go out on their own terms - better to be gone 100% than have your 100% reduced to 10% (with no voting rights and no say in what happens anyway) until swallowed up completely.

Well they will have voting rights, and will be still able to run the juniors, this is the only way to keep the Balmain Tigers identity! They also do not have 100% they now have 25% which is being reduced to 10%

The point was they had 100% - now 25 that will be reduced to 10%. Where is the Balmain Tigers identity? It will be a West Tigers Leagues Club and so will the one at Flemington, and how long before the Balmain Juniors are incorporated into being Wests Magpies Juniors?

By the way as I understand it - they have 2 places on the board with no voting rights.

There is no Wests Magpies juniors - they have already been rebadged as Wests Tigers juniors in Macarthur. Will be interesting if Balmain juniors gets rebadged as well.

Interesting point, I had forgotten about that!

With my roots as a Balmain Tiger's junior, my support is with them, not a licensed premises, and that organisation has been a part of WT for twenty years. My son only knows this team and supports them.

The other aspect is just the possible replacement of a building that has long sat in it's decrepit state, likely largely because of the greed of a fellow former junior that even back then was a poor human.

I might be missing something but why would anyone not want this?

There is a belief among some old Balmain supporters that this would be the first step in Wests eliminating them from the JV, with the ultimate goal of replacing the Tiger on the jersey with a Magpie. Baseless paranoia which is categorically false.

As an old Maggie's supporter I would be dead against this. 4 wests tigers jumpers, three west tigers t-shirts, 2 hats, 2 hoodies, a laurie nicholls singlet, 2005 gf dvd and some undies for the missus later I have moved on. I still have a magpie fridge magnet for ceremonial occasions.

The club is moving towards what Tim Sheens wanted years ago and that’s a combined Wests Tigers. The club is in a better position because of the strength of Wests Ashfield. The almighty dollar still reigns supreme.

I think both sides of the equation should be thankful to Wests Ashfield for that...

I hope they do. The club is only a joint venture to those of us old enough, which admittedly is still quite a few of us. For the younger generation Wests Tigers is all they know and frankly moving forward as an NRL entity is all that matters. The youngsters are after all, the future.

@Furious1 Agree this is the way forward to bring everything footy under one banner ... the Weststigers Is a strong brand and the younger generation identify with it . Us old fossils know how it evolved can’t turn back the clock this only strengthens the club in general with the fight ahead for survival in the Sydney basin .

Everything that can be done to make our club as united as possible and stay in Sydney as Wests Tigers is what we should be aiming for.Hopefully this will help us become an indispensable team in the NRL with great support finances and juniors.
If and when the NRL try to relocate teams we need to be one of the strongest brands in Sydney so it wont be us .
This is a step in the right direction to keep our future in our own hands

Im a Balmain member and will vote for the proposal hopefully it makes a strong club and keeps the nrl off the wests tigers back in relocation terms

@cochise Well as long as Wests Ashfield remember they were dead without Balmain at the start of the joint venture, To be honest it should be just Wests Tigers now with all its dealings, I think its ridiculous having a Canterbury Cup side as Western Suburbs Magpies, particulary when there is Wentworthville Magpies also included in the same competition, why do we do this?
