Benji Contract Upgrade

Benji has been loyal to this club for many many seasons and I think everyone needs to have a hard look at themselves. Yes his form is terribly bad at the moment and he needs to lift a lot and 1 million is too much for anyone I might add, but who are you going to replace him with?? Brooks and Moses are a couple of years away and could use the experience of benji to help them through. I hope the people who are so quick to criticise are also giving the plaudits when he returns to form.

Benji lover over here. i love u benji.

I apologise to all unreservedly - I was sucked in by the Bracey Spiel to watch his show. He said that Sonny Bill and Benji would be on the show and it was going to be a really big night! I'm going The Who on this: "I won't get fooled again!" Once again, I'm sorry. The Waratahs? Well, they don't tackle in rugby so I guess, why not?

club has been loyal to him.
how many injuries and shoulder reconstructions?
how many years of not performing, throwing balls over the sideline, 10m kicks for touch from penalties, kicking it straight to the wing/fullback on 5th tackle, missed tackles.
for a marquee player, he hasnt performed for years.
most of us hope he returns to form, but we have been waiting for 2 years and are running out of patience.
i'd rather blood a brooks or moses at the moment than persist with an older guy who isnt showing signs of improvement.
there was a 10 min stint in the souths game where we got pummelled and he pulled his finger out, apart from that, nothing.

yea don't think Benji will return to form. i'm honestly hoping he will but the signs aren't positive in the last few weeks or the whole of this year to be honest

Totally agree that I'm the one screaming at the tv or from the crowd when things go wrong and words can't describe the couple of missed tackles last week, I do feel however bar the absolute elite eg smith (who never makes an error) we would be talking about the next play maker who is out of form. Things have gone downhill for benji when we signed Blair and lost our depth in the forwards and the players who were the glue for the awkward relationships in our club like Robbie and benji. And I agree the club has also been very loyal to benji and he should be the first to acknowledge that.

Marshall's future with Tigers under fresh doubt

Benji Marshall's future at Wests Tigers is likely to come to a head imminently following talks between the club and the player's management on Thursday.

Wests Tigers' new chief operating officer Grant Mayer held talks with Marshall's manager, Martin Tauber, over an upgrade of the five-eighth's contract, as speculation emerged about a switch to rugby union.

Marshall's existing deal expires at the end of 2015, but has a clause in it allowing for a renegotiation following any increase in the salary cap.

His future at the club has been clouded following his benching in round 15 by coach Mick Potter.

''Benji Marshall is a priority for the club and we'd like to get some clarity around the position,'' said Mayer, who is running the Tigers on an interim basis after the departure of chief executive Stephen Humphreys.

''A meeting was held and we had some clarity. More discussions are coming.''

Humphreys and Tauber had been negotiating for months over an upgrade of Marshall's present deal, as well as a possible extension.

Those talks were put on hold as the Tigers' form dipped, but they were reignited on

Thursday. It appears now that negotiations will only continue around an upgrade of his present deal, rather than the five-year extended deal Marshall had originally sought.

Mayer is expected to hold further discussions with the Tigers' football retention committee in coming days, with a view to putting a revised deal to Tauber.

It's expected that the Tigers, and indeed Marshall, will have more clarity over his future in the next week.

While the Tigers believe they owe Marshall the respect of offering him an upgrade of his present contract, it has become clear the 28-year-old will not attract the sort of deal he had hoped for several months ago.

Coincidentally, there was some speculation on Thursday linking Marshall with a move to Super Rugby franchise, the Waratahs.

''The meeting was very fruitful,'' Tauber said. ''We're just waiting on a revised contract. We've been in discussions for some months now but the meeting was very positive.

''Above all else, we just want Benji to regain his mojo.''

While Marshall showed glimpses of the form he is capable of against Penrith in round 13, his performance against Brisbane on Monday night was heavily criticised.

The Tigers play Canberra at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday night.

Well the upgrade I can stomach as it was already agreed. I think it's a smart move not giving him the 5 year contract that humpty wanted to give him think its the reason humpty got the boot. I've been critical of Benji but as a club legend he does deserve the respect in being tabled the upgrade offer for his current deal and will give him two years to earn a new contract at the club beyond 2015.

Well said rob. Lets hope for all tiger and league fans he recaptures his brilliant best form off the back of a good young half ( brooks ) next year doing all the organising and letting benji just play what's in front of him.

Stuff that idea

Start performing and come and speak to us then

If not go sign with the Waratahs , bon voyage you won't be missed

Cobbs - your right, no one else can do those things, not even Benji anymore.

To mest people he'll be remembered for the flashy pieces of brilliance but to me he'll always be remembered as an incredibly frustrating player who was overrated and never matured. Those highlights packages are great viewing but they are 10 minutes over several seasons. For every successful flick pass there are three that don't come off that the opposition scores off.

You could put together a 'lowlights' package that was 2 hours long of all the bad plays he has made just of the last 18 months. In fact it would be hilarious viewing for everyone except for us Tigers fans. Dozens of backwards midfield bombs, kicks out on the full, passes out on the full, missed tackles, failing to find touch (or making 3 metres off a penalty for touch). I'd never want Bon to make that video because it would be detrimental to the club and our aim isnt to embarass our struggling players, but man it would be one funny/sad video.

Ps I hope he gets his act together and quickly. I dont want his career to turn into a joke and for us to remeber him on his 2013 form. At this stage I wouldn't be rushing to extend his contract.

The old saying is form is temporary, class is permanent. Is Benji class?

Another saying nothing lasts forever. I wish to but sadly his best days as a footy player are gone

Hang on, we are currently using the experience of Benji to helps the kids though. The issue is he is playing like a busted and the kids are pulling us through.

I don't think Marshall is down on form. I think this is his form. His game was always built on speed and instinctiveness. He no longer has any speed, doesn't run at the line and when is the last time you've seen him use his step?

The fact of the matter is, he hasn't improved or developed as a player in the last three years. He still makes the same mistakes week in week out as he did 8 years ago.

To be honest. I do hope Benji stays beyond 2014 because if he does I get the feeling his form will have improved. My issue is more the succession plan Wests Tigers has for once Benji moves on/retires. There's no doubt that Moses and Brooks are good enough to take over at some point but the question will be: Can Wests Tigers balance the books in order to retain Marshall for the short term whilst holding onto both Brooks and Moses? That is what I'm interested in.

I've got no doubt it can be done. It's a balancing act which will require the club to look into the future and project where certain players will be in 2-3, 4 years time talent wise. If the club goes out and re-signs Benji and then admits it can't keep both Brooks and Moses, well it's a poor decision purely because from a Business point of view it makes more sense to secure your long term assets over your short terms assets.

I think we can keep Moses and brooks, it's just about releasing or not re-signing the dead wood that is in our top 25\. About 5-10 players in that top squad that are either off contract or can be moved on. Also anasta coming off contract next season will have 250k freed up for the young crop coming through for upgrades and so on.

I hope he stays. He will come good again…
Wests Tigers are hurting atm.

Once we get a forward pack with sufficent grunt and skill, Benji will be back.

He's just a guy. Some people on here see him as either an idol, or as a fallen idol. Johnny suttion seemed rubbish for almost a decade.... Souths recruit the best back in the comp, get the right coach.. and now look.

Benji was rubbish against the Broncos... but what do you expect? With our pack, injuries... in brissy we got the result we deserved.

Besides... having benji is money in the bank.
