Benji Marshall #70

Benji would be the perfect face of the Tigers , he could also help the lower grade halves learn , I would have him back at the tigers no problem

I actually wonder if it would be a kick in the teeth for Robbie who seems to be genuinely buying into the team and coaching in a full time capacity. Whatever Benji does would be part time after his Fox commitments.

Beautiful words from one of my other all time favourite Tigers, Gaz!

Would like to see Benji back in some minor role, but can just imagine him Farah and Sheens outsing Madge.

That would actually be a great thing. At least those 3 had success at the club. Madge sadly has no clue.

He got to play 13 seasons at the Tigers, he wasn't that hard done by. Most players don't even play for 13 seasons.

The fact that Benji is interested in coming back after the way they treated him is testament to the man.
Come back Benji, we need you.

The club did not treat Benji badly imo, if anything Benji treated the club with disdain twice

Agreed.
So if Benji wanted to play to say, he was 40, and break smiths record, we should have just let him play another 5 years or whatever, just because he’s a legend of the club?

Hard to know what went on. We should have found a way to flick Reynolds way earlier.

if he was allowed to play origins he would be an imortal. all the other stars get more attention because they can play origin

Probably would have if he left WT and hooked up with Wayne earlier (glad he didn’t)

Could have been a star for the maroons.
New Zealand, that's in Queensland.

Wouldn't have made a Qld side ......and I mean that in all seriousness

You wouldn't take him over Lockyer , Thurston , Cronk and he'd self destruct as a 14 by trying to overplay every situation

Exactly, he should have played for Queensland.

If he could’ve played for QLD he would’ve been selected with Prince in 2006. But with the way Cronk & Thurston started to dominate he may have only lasted a season or two. Might’ve been considered in 2010-11 as an impact player off the bench…maybe.
I’m just glad he was a Kiwi through and through. When he got finally got re-selected and teared up during the anthem, that got me. He loved that jersey.

Correct Whakatane is in Queensland.

Sorry - had the same trouble later but the words of the post said this:

"Benji Marshall's retirement means there are no current NRL players who were alive the last time the Eels last won a premiership."

I think that the try that he set up for Fitzhenry against the Sharks in 2010 is my best memory of how great he was.
Obviously the try for Richards in the GF is etched in every league fans memory.

And my memory would be the miskick v the Dragons in 2011 ...where he barely touches the kick and it has to be reviewed about 10 times ...that for me is classic Benji ......sticks his head in a bucket of slops and comes up with a diamond

I wonder if I'll ever love watching a player so much again. I really don't think so. One of a kind.

To actually be at the ground and watch what he was capable of was a highlight I must say !

I doubt if Benji would be a good coach because everything that he did on the field seemed to be a spur of the moment decision. He always had trouble playing within a structure and this was always both his greatest strength and biggest weakness.

There’s this great misconception that great players will automatically make great coaches. That’s almost never the case. The two best coaches in the game were average players. Robinson and Bellamy.

Benji couldn't teach what he did ..it was mainly instinctive and lacked patience .....wasn't real good at getting 3 or 4 repeat sets in a row ......

Didn't need to, he would either score a solo try or try assist from 40m +!

And what happened after 2011 ...

We as a club sucked. Whether Benji was here or not.

True

Which is what is p ing me off little with some "journo's" and their tripe about 2021 Benji, - how good, how bad WT and we heartlessly and stupidly let him go etc etc.

Im not talking history - I'm all for Benji is his previous iteration one of the best - but let's be honest here.

If Benji was with WT this year - we still finish where we finished.
If Benji WASNT with the Wabitts - they still finish where they did.

In 2021, Benji was a mere passenger, Souths were good enough to carry him - we weren't.

No, he won them a couple of games mid season with starring roles off the bench. He gets us wins v Warriors and Cowboys and we make the 8.

He also started when they got beaten by 50 to Melbourne.

I don't really care to pick him apart as a footy player or as a person.
All I see is the guy who entertained all fans of the game, for so long, and who had an undeniably unique influence on the game and the way it is played. He impressed a generation of kids, including mine, like no other player ever has. Compared to most he has been a pretty good role model and was generally very well loved and respected by his team mates and his opponents. I believe he was a major part of why the Tigers have had such a great fan base and why for many years they were considered as the second favourite team of everyone who didn't support them.
The way he overcame his early injury setbacks, and the way he has reshaped himself as a player and a person over such a long career is also incredibly impressive.

So I am happy to stand and applaud him and am also proud that he was a Tigers player for so long. I hope he comes back to the club in some capacity as I am sure he has a lot to offer.
