HERE'S a reason Wests Tigers fans should look forward to the season ahead - even when every bookie in the country has already put a line through the Tigers as genuine title threats.

In the countdown to tonight's Foundation Cup clash against the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium, new coach Mick Potter has outlined his plan to make the most brilliant playmaker in the game a better footballer.

It has nothing to do with teaching Benji Marshall new tricks, it has everything to do with consistency.

As Potter says, Marshall needs to pull back if he wants to take the team forward.

"He's got things in his game that other people can't do and sometimes he is just too good for his own team," was how Potter put it.

"He does things his own team just aren't ready for."

We've all seen what Potter is talking about.

How Benji can produce the magic one week that wins the game, then the next week he will come up with the wrong option at the worst possible time and send the crowd home cursing his name.

Potter doesn't say it like it's a direct insult aimed at his star player. On the contrary, it is more a statement of fact.

And the statistics supplied by Fox Sports Stats back him up. In 2012 Benji led the NRL with most try assists (37) and linebreak assists (37) - but his 41 errors were also the most from any player in the regular season.

And remember, the Tigers missed the play-offs.

Sure, they had a terrible run of injuries during the season and given the turmoil at the club you wouldn't dare pin the blame on one man.

Still, even his greatest supporters would concede that it wasn't Benji's most stunning season.

Which is why the Tigers have gone from starting 2012 as premiership favourites to $17 outsiders entering 2013, 10th in NRL betting.

Yet, like it has done for a decade now, so much depends on Marshall's magic. He turns 28 on Monday and this will be his 11th season in the top grade.

Too old to change? Potter thinks not - and says what's more important is that the man himself understands the need for change.

He says it's not about blaming Benji for his freakish talent, more about helping him understand sometimes his teammates just can't keep up.

"He has been excellent, he has taken it on board," the Tigers coach said.

"He understands what he needs to do, that is the good thing and that is probably the easy thing for me, he understands.

"He is on a different stratosphere with some of the things he can do. So it's about getting him to work with the team and realise that not all the time they are on the same wavelength.

"He knows what he is seeing but he is just trying to get everybody up to Benji's standards. I'm not trying to harness anyone.

"We are just trying to get him to understand that sometimes the team members can't go with him on certain plays. (Sometimes) he needs to pull back a little bit.

"But also drag the other players up to him, meet halfway where everyone is on the same wavelength all the time.

"I do think Benji has got a little bit of improvement in him.

"And it is now about getting him to be accountable for his part of the game, whether it is for defence or whether it is attack, to just do a little bit more in certain areas.

"He has got some good things going for him and I want to encourage those - and he has got some things that he needs to work on.

"It is just about getting that balance right for the team."

Potters on the money. Marshall can play, but he need to be patient and wait for the right time and choose the right play. Last year he tried everything, most at the wrong time or end of the field. Hopefully Miller and Anasta will let him do what he does best, play like a freak when the opportunity arrives and set up heaps of tries. Can't wait to see if we can match it with the grinding teams. You know the hitting up, field position etc…, If we can, were a great chance of top 8 and probably more. Can't wait for the start of the season, unlike last couple of years, I'm excited to see this new team and what it can do.

I didn't mind reading this article, I think it's on the money and I'm quietly confident Potter has the temperament as a coach to help Benji with this aspect of his game. If Benji can re-produce similar figures for try assists and line break assists, but cut his errors down by half, then the Tigers should surely be looking at a top 8 spot. Benji has the right artillery outside him, and through the forward pack, just needs to choose when to fire them a bit better.

Please stop these rubbish stories. It must be a slow day. I've read this story at the beginning of every season for the last 10 years. We need he won't change

Unfortunately, if you don't give papers these fluff pieces they make up some crap about your captain hating your star player.

I'd like to see you dig those stories up for the last 10 years :unamused:

Yeh, its a repetitive theme, but what I found interesting is:

Many many here push this argument against those who are critical of his inconsistency:-

And the statistics supplied by Fox Sports Stats back him up. _In 2012 Benji led the NRL with most try assists (37) and linebreak assists (37)_ >

while ignoring this key factor as well:-

…....but _his 41 errors were also the most from any player_</bigin the regular season.

innsaneink,,what are trying to tell us? We have seen this stat 100000 times already…
You got anything NEW??? Are we sitting in the JUNGLE tonight??? I want to show my NEW BANNER for 2013!!! FOX will show it for sure!!!

What was Sheens thinking????

I don't think he was, AHX, at least not thinking of changing things to rectify the perennial problems the team was experiencing. I think Sheens was stuck in the past, doing the same things over and over, hoping to emulate the successes of times gone by. But times change and if you don't adapt and move along with the changes, time will pass you by.

Back on topic, I know it's only paper talk at this stage, but everything Potter has said already is bloody music to my ears! At least he can recognise the ongoing problems the team and individual players have had and what is needed for change. Whether he can implement these changes or not is another thing, but man I'm just liking the fact that he can actually see what's needed to make this team consistently good and competitive, at this stage.

The Tigers were far from their best in 2012, I suspect he took it upon himself to try and get us over the line and pushed his luck a few times, hence the high rate of mistakes. I'm confident that if the team plays well, so will Benji, and Potter wont have to intervene.

Flippedy what i meant by that was well summarized in your second paragraph. That was/is the topic. Potter is fine tuning Tim Sheens team.

Flipper, well said!!! Great read!!! Potter is saying the right things!! Did you see his interview on FOX Summer Time Special with the TIGAAAARS..IMPRESSIVE!! I am hoping Potter INSTALLS the MONGREL, by this we SMASH EARLY and HARD, aka DOGS of WAR in the 1980's!!! And when we are leading by 20 odd with 20 to go,,we GO ON IT WITH IT!!! How many times in the last 6 years, have we been leading by 20 only to chew our fingernails down in the last 5 HOPING WE HOLD ON to WIN!!

I actually found this article enlightening. A lot of people have bemoaned Benji's inability to "organise' and lead the team around ala Scott Prince. I think Benji has those skills its just his options at time that are questionable.

To my way of thinking If Benji played more percentage plays the organisation and leadership which we'e been looking for will come naturally.

I cant cop the excuse that Benji is too good for the team. Too many times he clearly takes the wrong option yet we gonna blame the 12 guys around him?

Maybe a few times someone like Beau couldnt foresee what Benji could, and we came up short, but most of the time its Benji just throwing a bad ball trying to be too cute.

I think your right however i think Potter has worded it the way he has to bring Benji on board without denting his confidence, i could be wrong but to me its all about psychology as when Benji is confident he is at his best. I actually thought it was a really smart attempt tp mold Benji into the player the team needs. I could be way off but thats the feeling i got out of the article.
