It was a period in the game where everybody tried to do anything to win. Benny played his guts out to get wins for the Tigers, and any other player for any other club would've done the same. If he played for Souths, Benny would be a Souths legend, if he played for the Sharks he'd be a Sharks legend. And he only played for one club which shows loyalty, something Mario didn't have, and for the guts he showed during origin, there are a lot of current blues players who could ask him for advice on how to tough it out.

When you think of Origin moments for NSW, the 3 most significant were Steve Mortimer breaking down in tears when winning the first ever series, Benny with the bandage hugging his mum and 2000 'Grenade' Try Celebration!

Sironen's rep career destroys Tallis - he played 24 Tests & 14 Origins in a really competitive era - & Tallis got 16 Tests (including 3 for SL when even Sol Haumono made the team) - and 17 Origins when Qld were losing!!!!!

Tallis' winning percentage in his 17 Origins is 29.5%!!!! Pathetic!!!!

Sirro's is 57% & he played against the likes of Lewis & Meninga! Blocker's is 52% from his 17 games - and he played 19 Tests compared to Tallis' 13 + 3 SL-nonsense games!!

Blocker would also kill both in a fight in his prime!!!

Did you answer my question whether you had seen the Balmain boys at their peak??? The answer is no!!!!

Blocker could throw them mate! Does anyone remember the short right that knocked Bob Lindner out cold in an Origin game in 1988 or 89??

And the one-punch knock-out of Cartwright in Rd 22 of 1989 - and the one-punch k.o. of Phil Daley in the RD 20 1988 match against Manly (that happened in back-play & cost us a try - and ultimately the game in an 8-4 loss - that was our only loss with Hanley that year aside from the GF)!

Funny hearing QLDers still going on about Benny.

They wanna bash him eh,well they had plenty of chances when he actually played footy against them for over ten years!!!!

And they came up dead empty.

I remember one Origin game when there were two Walters low lifes laying into him at the same time and they werent good enough to put him away.

Peeps forget how tough Benny was…..he copped plenty,and never buckled.

Tough as teak our Benny,and the finest hooker of his era,possibly EVER.

Mario got smashed twice and don't forget the pass he did in the first minute which QLD intercepted and nearly scored straight away. There was also the knock-on he did a bit after (although that was from one of many bad passes in that game from Benny Elias). I'm sure they will show all of it on the Footy Show this year along with his attempted tackle on Tallis. Poor Mario. :laughing:

No bias imo Fenech was worst on field and Benny was one of our best. We lost direction when he came off.

Mario looked like he was out there for fun whilst qld were deadset serious.

Loved the half time call. For nsw to be a chance Mario must run more decoys :slight_smile:
