Madge is the only thing that gives me confidence that we might turn it around someday.

He's our only hope.

I'm not sure he is

Obviously no one rates Canberra.
Seen far worse performances than that against lesser oppositon. This squad is simply not good enough.
Effort is there in other years - we have let Canberra steam role us in similar positions - but with no grunt, no speed, and players past their best this time of year is when the contenders emerge and the pretenders go backwards.
Not accepting mediocrity - its the reality of the situation. We are not rated by anyone for good reason we have a sub par roster, and now we are out of contention Maguire doesnt have to sugar coat it anymore.

@Snake to a certain degree he must fall on his sword, he keeps picking out of form players, keeps picking kickers that miss goals even though they continue to miss, he must make some changes for his own sake and take his own accountability for his team as he talks but the players more so

If he keeps picking out of form players it’s because he has no one to replace them with. The Magpies are just as bad as the first grade team. Can’t even make the 8 in a 12 team competition.

@jirskyr
.......and where have Cleary's two big forward buys been this year?
This isn't the same roster that Cleary worked with, almost but a big part of the engine room has been MIA.

Agreed. Further to that to compare the results of a coach who went to a club that finished in the top six last year and and contains the current NSW Origin halves pairing to our roster that has a couple of million in playing talent unable to handle the week to week rigours of NRL ( that previous coach signed to long term deals) is unfair. Cleary also has the luxury of promoting players from a very successful Canterbury Cup side and junior system. Something Madge can only dream of at this point in time.

He can bag all he likes, but he needs to come up with the answers. This is basically the squad he has for the next 2 years with little wriggle room in terms of roster spots and funds becoming available.

I agree. He can be as frustrated as he likes, but it's his job to get performances out of his players. The fact that they drift in and out of games/weeks reflects as much on the coach as the players.

We can all agree it's not a top-tier roster, but I made the point earlier that this same roster won 12 games last year with the guy who became a very maligned coach. Fast forwad 12 months and Tigers will almost certainly not make 12 wins this year, whilst Panthers likely will.

I'm not anti-Madge because he just started, had to cop a cap penalty that had nothing to do with him, and has had minimal capacity yet to shape his roster. He does seem to punish bad performances. Maybe he'll blood a whole number of new players in the coming weeks, then we can all see what a bad strategy it is to chuck kids into first grade, despite what some fans clamour for after a run of losses.

I just find it funny that so many people reacted positively to seeing the coach finally crack a hissy fit in public. Doesn't change the result one iota and frankly there have been a half dozen or more games where that response from Madge would also have been appropriate.

Yes the fact that forwards continue to start games with "the moonwalk" mode is problematic to see from a coach with such experience. Perhaps he should consult former Magpie coach who was THE MASTER at getting them prepared for carnage needed to be inflicted to the opposition.
Afraid its matter of too many nice blokes playing for us.

My biggest concern with Maguire this year has been his use of the interchange. In my view it has been terrible.

Positive is that our attack (except for inside the 20) seems to have improved.

Priorities are forwards that van make metres and get quick play the balls & improving the speed of the defensive line, which I would have thought would have already occurred based on the fitness work the team is doing. That is just attitude.

6 games too late but I love it. This squad goes to water way too easily.

See what you're saying Pat but unfortunately when there's no obvious standouts in Reggies and no cap space to make a decent purchase he's got to try and extract the best out of what he has.

Now that the season is gone he can start writing players off. Might be a bit of movement in the off season.

Just watched the conference again this morning. Right toward the end he was really trying to keep composed and was starting to get visibly annoyed. He must have gone spare after that conference.

The simple reality is there is only so much a coach can do without the troops.

Eiesenhuth isolated on his own line = goes low, soft...raiders score easily and roll to an easy lead.

Sam Burgess in exact position = makes a huge hit, ball spills free...players all run in and slap his back...his team stays 0-0 and everyone lifts.

Same coach.

the positive reaction is because madge reacted how i reacted after that performance. the communication out of WT so far was all about seeing the positives. they didn't seem to care as much as we did about losing.

@Tiger-Tragic so the alternative is make do with the team he has and aim to finish in something like 7th place with no eye towards the long term real success of the club nor addressing the culture of mediocrity that has seen us finish in the top 50% three times in twenty years? What is your actual solution?

Because the above is what the naysayers are implying. And I say implying because I'm yet to hear any reasonable solution other than "the coach needs to do better... he's made this call too late...he's nothing special".

I'm sure if it was so easy to get rid of the overpaid the club would have. I'm sure if we had standouts in reserves they'd be playing (and they have eg. Clark and Garner).

Poor bastards on a hiding to nothing with this roster .
He knows what he’s got won’t improve and he knows there has to be a complete squad overhaul.
If he keeps up the beard , in 6 months he’ll be a dead ringer for @Geo lol
