Nearly finished Rhythm of war. The 4th book in the Stormlight Archive. Good read

Sanderson? I'll always like him for saving the wheel of time after Jordan wasted 2 or 3 books but couldn't get into his early work when I tried. Might put this on the to read list.

I haven't read the latest one in that series but I liked the first 3 and will read the 4th once I have some time on holidays. They're long books (1,000+ pages each) but he keeps the pace and exposition going well. There are a lot of characters in it and one of his writing devices in that series is interlude chapters that focus on (often peripheral) individual characters. There is a fairly good chance that you'll find some of these characters annoying (he doesn't always do female characters well) and their chapters can be a bit of a grind, but it's worth perservering because the overall story is progressing well.
The Way of Kings is the first book in the series - worth giving it a try.

Thanks for the detailed review. Peripheral characters can do my head in a little, as do female characters that aren't well written. I remember thinking his main female charcter in a previous series was a bit odd (Vin?). Still, I'll keep it in mind as I often feel like a fresh start and doubt I will even get halfway through Feists remaining books.

I don't have the same patience for epic or heroic fantasy after reading some of the darker (Martin, Abercrombie, Lawrence) or more introspective works (Hobb, Lian Hearn) I've read in more recent years.

Feist advice please.
Finishing the riftwar saga (re-reading after 15 or 20 years).

What should I get next? Read them in the order written, or something else?

My second reading of them about 5 years ago I read them in Chronological order, ie the order the books were set in not written in. I did that to just change it up a bit .

How on earth can you squeeze in time for all of that reading when there's so much forum to fill the void?

My second read of the Feist books I read all of those books in a 12 month period.

Did you ever get to Legend?

Sounds silly but I re read all of Feist every year, I read all the Rift War from Magician to Magicians End early this year plus another 30 something books so far.

When I mentioned Robert Harris earlier in the thread, I failed to mention Conclave. A novel about the election of a new Pope. It goes inside the Vatican and focuses on the facilitator of the the Conclave. Surprisingly suspenseful given there’s no threat of violence like other Harris novels. Pretty interesting twist too.

I like the sound of that.

Looking forward to season 4 of Last Kingdom coming out this week!

Fantastic show and the Bernard Cornwell novels are even better.

Unusually I haven't read the novels, may have to do that!

Just bought the 11th. one Cochise, haven't read it yet, but the other ten were teriffic, obviously a lot more detail than the series. He is a great writer and keeps you interested on every page.

100% my style of books, I usually drift more to the medieval fantasy genre slightly more than the more realistic type books. I'll check it out in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the tip!

Have you read any of David Gemmells stuff Cochise?

Man I remember reading Waylander when I was younger. That was an awesome series.

It is funny what memories this thread has brought up. When I was at high school, many decades ago now, I hated reading. I always thought it was me. I couldn’t stand the books. We had to read things like Jane Eyre, Catcher in the Rye, Wuthering Heights just to name a few. It wasn’t until I left school and discovered Science Fiction that a actually started to enjoy reading. Then I made up for it. Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Frank Herbert, Doctor Who Target series books. Most of the hard copies are gone now replaced by the Kindle App versions. I now basically carry a library with me wherever I go. Who would have thought.

Kindle is great, particularly if you're travelling overseas (not likely in the immediate future). It's also been great during this isolation period, to be able to download a book whenever I want something to read.
Fortunately my brother introduced me to Biggles books when I was about eight. I've been hooked on reading ever since.

Biggles! Man that’s a blast from the past. I used to love those books.

Biggles??!!
Now that triggers memories! And Algy, Ginger and Smyth. Thanks for the trip way back when.

These days I like anything by John Le Carre and writers who torment the spy genre.

Asimov - Foundation series

They're good

I read every Asimov book years ago, couldn’t get enough of it.
The logical realism had me hooked.

I'm very interested to see how they go with the Foundation tv series next year.
