BREAKING - MARSHALL LEAVING

A sad day in the history of the Wests Tigers.

I hope the wraps on the lower grade kids are right because they have big shoes to fill.
But as been pointed out, there is a massive difference between the kiddies cup and mixing it with the big boys.

The end of an era and one that has resulted in a premiership and many memorable and happy times. For me, it takes a lot of the excitement and enjoyment out of it as Benji is one of my favourite players of all time along with Raudonikis, Dorahy, Skandalis and McGuinness.

Once again a sad day :frowning:

Very sad day. Can we please stop all the knocking now and start the 'thanks for the memories' pages?

I for one am devastated. Benji leaving really means a new era.

Some of my best Tiger memories are of Benji's plays. They are etched in my brain.

In 20 years time we will talk about him as the greatest attacking weapon we have ever seen.

The greatest Wests Tiger ever.

x2

Some of you blokes are really building Brooks up for a fall. Lets not build the entire future around a kid who hasn't even played first grade.

Then why did they all want Benji to go? Did they ever think of the huge gap which would be left in the Wests Tigers 5/8 position? All the best wishes Benji, 2005 will always remain in my memory.

His greed for a further extension has brought this on. And the fans are knocking him. Please,
look at the real picture, some fans are just outright disgusted.

Thanks you did a lot for this club , but life goes on and we have young players coming on and may well take over and i know they are untried but we still have Anasta , sirro to play half and five eight if needed and dont forget our gun captain , thanks but probably the best result in the end , This will start a culture change due to the big name benj has and aslo the cash it will give us , if he was upgraded he may well have been on 700 k , thats 1 good new buy and lock up money for Simona , brooks and co

It looks like Matty Johns was right the Waratahs look like getting his signature with a Stint in Japanese Rugby to top up his Salary.Makes sense it's the only way he could make more than playing in the NRL.

I also think the fact that he was never going to play for New Zealand again was a contributing factor in his decision.

To be honest Marshall hasn't been performing well for a while - and the magic was being overshadowed by the mishaps.
Still , he will be remembered as one of the great attacking players and crowd pleasers of all time.
You don't get the accolade of being the best player in the world just for injecting the odd bit of flair here and there.
Maybe he just needs a change or a new challenge to re invigorate him.
Like most supporters I've put my head in my hands when he's passed the ball over the sideline again or tried something that had no chance of coming off.
I've also cheered , and been amazed , at some of the plays that could only be described as football genius.
What concerns me is the way some of the supporters who lauded him in the good times have now turned on him like jackals.
Seems everybody knows all the bad things about Benji without ever having spoken with him or been involved with the team.
Who will be the next player to be blamed for being conceited/controlling/petulant without any evidence?
Marshall has stated he will never take the field against the Tigers - that in itself shows he has a deep respect for the club that gave him an opportunity to become a star and the fans that supported not only him but the team he represented.
Too bad some on here can't show him the same level of respect.
Will we miss him?
Maybe at first…. but the team will always go on to find new champions.
Good luck in your future Benji, may it be both safe and successful.
Thanks for the memories!

it would have shattered his ego. but very true (unless injury).

Finally one era ends the Sheens/ Marshall show, and now the new era begins in earnest , it could be a rocky road for a while but IMO it is the best fo both party's . Good luck Benji your heart has not been in it for quite some time, hopefully the grass will be greener where you end up.

I am sad to hear he's leaving, in my opinion he as been the most entertaining footballer in the NRL and has brought much enjoyment to the Rugby League community. If this had happened last year I would have been shattered, but the way Benji has acted since his benching has altered my opinion of him which is a shame. Sandow has carried himself much better.

Good luck to Benji, I wish him the best and I hope things work out for him.

Don't cry all you Benji nuthuggers -No player is bigger than the team - one must ask themselves, what do i support- is it the players, is it the jersey, what is it?? Someone recently asked on this forum what does new culture mean? I think people forget too quickly what this team has put us through. How many times have you cursed at the tv or been in a grumpy mood all weekend because the tigers have made a stupid play or just didn't turn up to play or what about those days we actually play well get to a good lead then hanging on to our seats about to have a heart attack because they can't put the game away - We all just dismiss it and say it's the way tigers play and call it exciting, attacking, whatever

I for one can't wait for the above to change - I want to know what it feels likes to be a Melbourne, Manly or bulldogs fan that wins most weeks with no fuss - I assume it feels pretty good..

Good luck to the tigers who I will always support and good luck to all the new tiger boys that will get their chance with Benji leaving..

Thanks for everything Benji as a young Kiwi lad growing up you were my hero, you were the man who made me support this club, you were the player I pretended to be playing on the field at school with my mates, I am and always will be a fan. I know I am not the only Tigers fan that this once in a lifetime player brought to this club.

All those who are saying good riddance are just childish, sure he hasn't been his old self but this man nearly single handily put this club where it is today. He helped turn this club from a laughing stock to a team that won a premiership within a short few years and would have had another few if not for poor and head scratching coaching decisions around player selection.

I feel cheated, he could have been anything if he had a dominant half and forward pack to work with instead of Sheens messing him around trying to turn him into a Joey Johns when he was a Benji Marshall.

The Season isn't over yet take us out in style.

Chur Benji. You will be missed. Now go win us a Gold Medal in the Sevens

Also for years we have talked about the toxic culture built around friendship rather then results. The new regime has seen fit to rectify this and it is the right thing moving forward

Thanks Julia…or is it Kevin lol

Sorry Smeg, couldn't resist

So many short memories here. We are going to miss him more than we know. I for one will not like seeing Benji in any other jersey in any code.

Does anyone ever gauge how much $$$$$ a player brings to the club??

Possibly why Hyundai is not renewing!!
