OFFICIAL Brett Hodgson appointed Assistant Coach

Deserves a go. Champion player and passionate about the club. When hiring if you have a relationship and know you can work together well - it’s an easy hiring decision against uncertainty.

Has been around the blocks, lots of experience with systems and styles
great player , granted
coach record is very week , we needed an outside experienced coach to assist , not sit beside , Benji and Richo have failed with this appointment, it’s poor , Benji just protected himself as both Morris and Hodgo are not who you would move to head coach. Boys club all day and Richo is slowly falling straight into the bullshit club .

I love Hodgo Tigers legend but when you read his CV below what is he bringing to the table can someone confirm if he lit a fire in the Magpies squad when he was there and how did he go at Hull ?

After retiring as a player, Hodgson transitioned into coaching roles. He gained experience as a coaching consultant for Hull F.C. and Widnes Vikings, where he shared his knowledge and expertise with young players. In 2018, he returned to the Wests Tigers as an assistant coach and head coach of the Western Suburbs Magpies.

In November 2020, Hodgson was appointed as the head coach of Hull F.C., where he had previously served as a coaching consultant. His tenure as head coach showcased his strategic thinking, dedication, and ability to lead a team. While the team faced challenges during his time as head coach, Hodgson's passion for the game and commitment to developing young talent were evident.

In 2023, Hodgson joined Eddie Jones' coaching team with the Wallabies, the Australian national rugby union team, as a defensive coach. His wealth of experience in both codes of rugby and his expertise in defense make him a valuable addition to the coaching staff.

Do you just quote that you read or do you believe it ?
I wouldn’t have defensive coach for the Wallabies on my CV. Coz they were/are rubbish.
And we don’t need someone just “ passionate about the game and commitment to developing young talent” but rather a serious analyst who can assist Benji by analysing what’s not working, and how to correct it.
We’re all passionate about the game and commited to young talent, but we’d like to see our pack working hard and together and a backline that actually looked dangerous.
Anyway, I hope it works because if it doesn’t they’ll be reopening Callan Oark fir all the Tiger fans who finally lose it !!

As head coach of Hull they had a handful of 40 point floggings in his first year, and 3x 60 point floggings the following, .
As D coach at the Wallabies, Wales put 40 on em and Argentina put 60 on em, plus a host of other floggings.
He’d make a good scourger at a penal colony.
He should fit in well.

Yes its a quote , as I am an old Magpie supporter and he was and still is my favourite former player, I just want to believe that he was our best option

It's like the bro @Magpie_Magic said, or may have been
BWG, but this appointment is really there for benji
as support & so as not to undermine his position.
Way different than having an ex-head coach as your
assistant knowing he could replace you if you at
any given time. Benji needs time & support, he's a
drawcard. Without benji there is no Api/Luai at Wests

I love Hodgo and in a vacuum this might be a really good appointment. But thanks to this clubs weird obsession with re-hiring anyone connected to the 05 GF, the optics of this appointment make it look ridiculous. Which is sad, cos Hodgo deserves better.
Yeah when there all the talk of bringing back the wests tigers DNA , we all thought it was a metaphor, but it was a literal interpretation...actual flesh and blood from 05. As much as they can hire. 🤣

Hull was performing worse before he took over and after he left went worse again. So was it the cattle or the coach?

If Richo and co have done their due dilligence and he is the best guy for the job; then great. Even better that he won a premiership with us.

If it is jobs for the boys - not so great.

Would be nice to know who the other candidates were that he beat for the position.

He had a couple of average halves in Josh Reynolds and Will Smith.

“His appointment completes an extensive recruitment process, both in Australia and abroad, which included interviews with seven other highly qualified candidates.”

From memory last time Hodgo took the NSWCup / assistant role whilst leaving his wife and family back in France. I could be wrong about this.
However does anyone know if the whole family has relocated this time around?

I believe he did leave the fam the first time.
I’m sure this is not the case this time with Benji’s “family before winning” approach.

If Hodgo can give our squad half the toughness to size ratio he had as a player our side will be invincible. He's an absolute legend. I don't care about 'Job's for the boys' or 'Its a boys club'. Well yeah... we are a Rugby League Football club, and that guy is a club legend, he's qualified and deserves a go. That's not weird or inappropriate. He also did good work for us as an assistant under Ivan Cleary as well.

He knows what it takes to win premierships and make GFs, BUT he also knows what its like to be on a bus home to Campbelltown in the middle of winter after being smacked 54-4 someplace while you're on a multi spoon streak. He knows how to face those moments without being traumatised by it. That's what our young fellas need to learn more about.

You don't find that experience in some modern Roosters assistant who's only used to working with rep players and the benefits of uncle nicky's tuck shop bags for the last 5 years.

Welcome home Hodgo.
