Brian Smith report

Who actually instigated a audit to be conducted on our operations? Was it the WT or a recommendation by the NRL, and since when has Brian Smith being doing these audits. Will the contents of his findings become public. Is the club or the NRL using this process as a smokescreen and as a back up to make changes. Will it release names of those that were consulted.

And just a final question. Was Brian Smith ever a coach of Mick Potter. If so what was their relationship like.

This whole process has a big question mark over it.

Not sure about any of your first paragraph, I would hazard a guess it was requested by the NRL though.

Smith coached Potter at St. George in the early 90's.

Was it the WT or NRL idea to conduct an audit. Why was Brian Smith picked. Does he have a history in this area.

I don't know whom requested it TM, I was speculating it was the NRL given they have pumped money into the club, they will want a say on where it gets appropriated and as such they will need an in depth report on how the club is run at all angles.

It does seem strange that a former coach was appointed to do it though. Brian Canavan did a few of these but since he has resumed with the Roosters I'd safely bet that he wasn't available to undertake it.

Brian Smith says Wests Tigers need a head of football as Mick Potter wavers

Former grand-final coach Brian Smith has recommended Wests Tigers employ a head of football as pressure mounts on Mick Potter to keep his job.

Potter has two games to show he has the support of the playing group before the joint-venture's board meets on July 31 to discuss the coaching situation.

Smith spent five weeks at the club recently to review the Tigers' football operations from a grassroots level upwards, but he was not engaged to examine Potter’s credentials. However, the underlying feedback to Smith from various people within the Tigers was a lack of communication from the NRL coach.

Smith – who was coach while Potter captained St George to a 1993 grand-final loss – has not made any recommendations about Potter’s future. Just six weeks ago, Potter was close to receiving a two-year contract extension but the club’s performances have fallen away in recent weeks, and any extension now is unlikely as relations between the coach and senior players sour. Fairfax Media understands that poor communication between Potter and the players has resulted in growing discontent among the players.

It is understood Tigers boss Grant Mayer will meet with the playing group on Friday in a bid to clear the air about any misgivings the players have about Potter.

There is a concerted push from the players for assistant coach Todd Payten to be promoted to the head role from next year. Like Potter, Payten is off-contract at the end of this year, while fellow assistant David Kidwell is contracted until the end of next year. Payten and Kidwell were added to the NRL staff this season.

Had Potter made the top eight last year he would have been given an automatic contract extension and pay rise, but that deal lapsed when the Tigers struggled, winning just seven games to finish second last on the premiership ladder in his first year as coach of the club. However, a top-eight finish this year could still save Potter.

Mayer said the Tigers had sought “independent input” surrounding the club’s coaching position.

“Running concurrent to the push to the finals is the board’s decision on our coaching structure and head coach for 2015,” Mayer wrote to Tigers’ members on Thursday. “We’ve had independent input to this process and a number of players and staff have been consulted.

“The results of this review have highlighted many areas to address and we will do so privately and without public comment. These decisions will not be rushed and will be made with the best interests of Wests Tigers in mind.

“We understand that people want to know what is happening at the club but please know that delicate and important decisions like this should not be influenced by any external sources.”

The Tigers – who host the in-form Bulldogs on Sunday – have a growing injury ward and James Tedesco, Braith Anasta, Liam Fulton, David Nofoaluma are all sidelined.

Potter joins Gold Coast Titans mentor John Cartwright, who also faces an uncertain future, while St George Illawarra and Newcastle continue their search for a coach.

They should just make Farah captain/coach and be done with it as I've mentioned before !… And save a ton of cash...

It was the same issue potter had with the playing group last year if I'm not mistaken ?
( coach / player communication issues ).

I feel for potter .. He his who he is .. That's his character ... I quiet , humble sort if a bloke .

Are his communication skills that bad he hands over the game plans in individual envelopes to individual players each week ?
It's the players that need a massive kick up the arse IMO ... Another 2 years down the shitter !!!

Has nothing to do with Potter at all. It has to do with being run by a pack of impatient &^%$ that expect miracle's overnight.

God help the next coach.

Need to give Potter a break. At the start of the year we were wooden spoon favourites and we have done exceptionally well to be just out of the top 8 on points difference alone.

And we all know how unlucky and frustrating this year has been with injuries - Teddy, Nofo, Anasta, Fulton retiring, Paterson, Simona etc.

Maybe instead of looking at the coach they should be looking at the crap backroom medical staff and ask why its taking so bloody long for players to return from injury. Bloody amateur hour.

If that's the case they may as we'll reappoint Roycie, then the boys club will be back in full swing.

So Payten and his band of ex player white anters now have done the job on Potter ..look for another club Mr Payten you might of had a future at our club .After the dust has settled maybe a new CEO might be the right way to go but that could be a few years as there has been a new board coming for 6 months .

Is this "Head of Foottball" position that Smith is recommending for Wests Tigers the same role which Gus Gould has with Panthers?

I can't quote anything to hand, but I understand Smith has done this type of review for more than one club and he is certainly very experienced regarding club operations.

Will the club make the findings public? Certainly not! Maybe they will make a few comments or changes that are a result of the review.

But this is a private internal review, not a royal commission. Show me any other private company on earth that releases results of an internal audit, that is suicide.

it feels to me very reminiscent of the review the club did last year, albeit with potter apparently not involved with this one.

i think this is a storm in a teacup regarding potter and they will just ride out this (stupid imo) overly critical pressure supposedly being placed on potter.

from an outsiders perspective, i would be stunned if the club thought the best course of action was to end potters tenure. to me it is plain to see the improvements since he started, and i would hate for the tigers to become one of those clubs who ends up having 10 different coaches in 11 seasons….

I don't get this club. I thought Potter had done enough to see how we go next year. Injuries and blooding have taken its toll. Injuries you cant help, blooding you have to do.

I would rather some stability with old fashion faith and commitment to the coach.

The Brian Smith report was needed, the club needed a independent person to identify problems and give them some solutions based on his experience. We just can not keep going down the same road of under achieving year in and year out.

Its one thing to go to the trouble of getting this report done, but it is a total waste of time if the club dosn't vigorously act app on the recommendations and time will tell if this actually happens.

Our club needs a rocket under it, and that is from the board room down and just maybe the Smithy report may just do the trick. Time will tell, but it is getting harder and harder to be a one eyed fan of our club
