Brisbane expansion gets the nod from ARLC

Can we assume that a year or two after this club there will be an 18th team, presumably Perth?

Maybe a second team from NZ, or a combined Pacific nations team.

Personally I would love to see PNG Hunters, but I doubt it.

Like Matterson....Moses .....

I think this is a pretty weak argument over all. How many Wests Tigers players have "weasled" their way out of their contract, and how many have honoured their contract? I think the count in the first column is 3, 4 if you include Ivan Cleary? We'd be up to, what 300 or so in the second contract?

Secondly, if indeed contracts "aren't even worth the paper they are written on", then so be it, it means we can potentially entice any footballer from any other side to weasle out of their deal as well.

Either way, you are better off having good players contracted to you than not.

No one is going to weasel there way to the Tigers.....ever ....sorry .....

Hopefully, but VLandy seems to against rusted on AFL states. Because Melb are so so horrible right, compared to the success of Gold Coast.

As long as we offer drinks and something to nibble on while they wait, I guess that is some incentive.

Everybody in QLD knows it's going to be the Dolphins, the PNG Hunters are 10 to 15 years away, no junior system still exists, I lived there for 4 years and never seen a junior game.

Yeah for sure mate, I meant PNG for a potential 18th team, not the 17th. Even then it would be unlikely compared to a Perth or 2nd NZ team.

We should offer the same service ANSETT now offer on all there flights

this QLD team, irrespective of who gets the license, is going to be after a bunch of Sydney and Melbourne-based Queenslanders. Grant, Munster, Mahoney, Welch, Arrow etc spring to mind.

we re-signed Simpkin not too long after his debut, I don't think we've got anything to worry about there. Hoffman might head north if he's on the nose here as a depth player for them. Joffa could end up there in a couple of years. some of the youngsters we've picked out of the Queensland systems might be targets in a few years, but for the most part I don't think we have too much to worry about. there are a lot of clubs that will be looking over their shoulders, namely Souths if Bennett ends up as the coach up there, but I don't think we have too much to worry about at this point.

Another screw up by the NRL

Ridiculous to bring in another club, when there’s barely enough depth as it is with the current number of clubs. And you just know they’ll try and bring in an 18th club within 5 years. The gap between the good and bad teams is only going to get bigger.

Ooooo scary
"The Dolphins" 🐬

Hmmm.... I think the Dolphins is a rather apt name for a Rugby League team 😉

"–Dolphin sex can be violent and coercive. Gangs of two or three male bottlenose dolphins isolate a single female from the pod and forcibly mate with her, sometimes for weeks at a time. To keep her in line, they make aggressive noises, threatening movements, and even smack her around with their tails. And if she tries to swim away, they chase her down. Horny dolphins have also been known to target human swimmers -Demi Moore is rumored to have had a close encounter of the finny kind.

–Dolphins kill harbor porpoise babies. In Scotland, scientists found baby harbor porpoises washed up with horrific internal injuries. They thought the porpoises might have been killed by weapons tests until they found the toothmarks. Later, dolphins were caught on film pulping the baby porpoises-the dolphins even used their ecolocation to aim their blow at the porpoises’ vital organs.

–Dolphins kill their own babies. Baby dolphins have washed up alongside the dead porpoises, and some scientists think that all the porpoise-slaughter was just practice for some old-fashioned infanticide . For other mammals like lions, killing the babies makes the females immediately ready for the next pregnancy, and maybe that’s the case with dolphins, too.

The scariest part is dolphins can wreak havoc day and night without sleeping. A recent study found that dolphins could stay awake for five days straight with no loss of mental acuity. The dolphins didn’t even need to make up sleep at the end of the study, though the scientists sure did.

If the dolphins ever evolve thumbs , we’re in trouble. It will be like a slasher-film remake of Douglas Adams’ So Long And Thanks for All The Fish . If I wash up with pulped innards and dolphin tooth marks, you’ll know why. After all, you never hear about the people the dolphins push out to sea."

Munster and Smith commit.

You are biased though aren't you? Personally I don't care which QLD team they admit, as long as it doesn't go belly-up within 2 years.

And surely one of the best ways to avoid going rapidly belly-up is having a big nest egg to fall back on in setting the club up for promotion, rather than scrapping around with the NRL annual grant plus some sponsorship?

No ....not at all

Virtually everyone who has commented if you take finances out of the equation that Ipswich is the common sense approach

Seagulls were the strongest financial sports club in Australia when the Seagulls joined in 1988

If you don't have the demographic ready to support the franchise is doesn't matter how much money you have in the bank ..in assets

Ipswich is Rugby League ......

End of 2020 9 players from the Ipswich SHS signed with NRL clubs ...one school

Why do Dolphins not have the demographic to support? Serious question, I don't know the QLD Cup sides well enough.

I always assumed the Ipswich issue was funding / sponsorship issue. I am aware Ipswich City is comparable in population to Townsville (bigger in fact) so there's an argument that if Cowboys can make it, so can the Jets.

V'landys is no moron, I expect he's going to financially bind Dolphins sports club to the new franchise and penalise their balls off if they attempt to withdraw.

The comparisons to Seagulls - fair enough, but also an argument can probably be made that governance was pretty weak in 1988, then everything was turned upside-down by Super League.

Because finances do matter, even if you can find examples of passionate low-income clubs, or mistake-ridden rich clubs. Who are the Top sides in NRL right now? Storm, Panthers, Souths, Roosters - all cashed up. Yes Broncos are rich and lowly-placed, but that's a recent phenomenon and not typical of their overall history.
