'I still like playing five-eighth': Doueihi eyes Benji's jumper
By Christian Nicolussi
September 14, 2020 — 3.51pm

Adam Doeuihi sees himself as a No.6 but might have to wait until next season to get his wish as the Wests Tigers look set to recall Josh Reynolds for this week's clash against Melbourne.

Tigers fans will be split over who should replace the suspended Luke Brooks in the halves alongside Benji Marshall for Saturday's game. Reynolds, Doueihi and even rookie Jock Madden all have supporters.

Madden is no chance of being given a debut against a tough opponent like the Storm, so Reynolds appears the front-runner, despite some club greats last week hoping he would be overlooked for the rest of the year because of his Brookvale Oval walkout.

Doueihi said he would love to play five-eighth after being tried at fullback and, more recently, in the centres.

The 22-year-old was being groomed for Cody Walker's No.6 jersey at South Sydney over the summer until the club decided to re-sign Walker. He was then told to prepare for fullback before they signed Latrell Mitchell.

'I played all my junior footy and under 20s in the halves.'

"I still like playing five-eighth, I played all my junior footy and under 20s in the halves,'' Doueihi said. "Long term, I'd like to see myself there but it's up to 'Madge' [Tigers coach Michael Maguire] where he sees me.

"We've also got Jock Madden coming up. I'm not sure if he's going to get a run [on Saturday] but if Madge gives me the No.6 or No.7 jersey, I'll definitely take it with both hands.''

At one stage last summer, Doueihi was linked to the Storm, only for the powerhouse club to baulk at the huge money he was on at Souths.

The chance to play alongside departing Tigers legend Marshall clearly had appeal.

"He's a freak of a player ... he's just an amazing bloke to play with,'' Doueihi said.

"He's a big leader in this club obviously. We have a young squad and we don't have much experience, for him to be around the boys at training and in the game ... he's a big name, has an aura about him around the club, loves the Tigers and you can see he's still got some footy in him.

"I think it helps [having someone with that aura], especially at our club. We're a young squad, not many boys have played finals footy or many first-grade games, so a big name does help us out.''

As for his first season at the Tigers, Doueihi said: "I'm happy with how I'm travelling. I've had a few niggles with the longer season and no byes this year. Everyone is carrying niggles now so you can't do many extras on the paddock at training, which is a bit disappointing.

"There's stuff I have to work on. It will be a big off-season for me to pick my speed up, get strong in the gym, get my endurance up. I haven't really done a pre-season. I've had surgeries the past few and the World Cup in [2017], so I'm looking forward to a really good pre-season next year and working on some things to fix up my game.''

OK I like the boy.

So no surgeries required and looking at a good full pre-season..

Good to know..

We need a good halves coach at the club. Doueihi has the potential to be a solid half, he’s got good long kicking and has thrown some nice passes, as well as having the ability to break tackles.

His weaknesses are his short kicking which has been pretty dreadful to be honest, he seems out of sync with the backline sometimes and would like to see more short passing out of him

If he can work hard during pre season he’ll get quicker and stronger, and if our coaches work with him his ball playing can be worked on. Plenty of work for him to do but he could become a good option at 6 for sure

Great to see he has identified speed as an issue, maybe he knows he has more pace in him but injuries have held him back.

He can be a real damaging runner if he can get some speed.

While he’s not really missed a game the leg injuries certainly have held him back. You can see he looks faster in clips from last season and his goal kicking has been held back as well. The last few weeks he’s looked faster and much better at conversion so hopefully that’s a sign it’s almost fixed up. He’s also not going down with a knock every game like he was earlier in the season

He is a centre and possibly a fill in half at best, he is definitely difficult to run off due to his running style.

Musgrove and McIntyre.

Play with an 8 man pack.

Put 2 props and 2 backrow forwards on the bench. Allows the forwards to go hell for leather for 80 minutes. Anyone can take a kick on the 5th tackle. It couldnt possibly be any worse then what gets dished up by the current halves on the 5th.

I reckon have a whole team of fast, strong ball playing 2nd rowers.

Are you Tim Sheens?

Interested to see how he’d go after a full pre season. He’s had to learn all our systems on the fly and has been improving throughout the year so hopefully he has an injury free pre season before next season

Most think our systems suck..

Gunna be the best pre-season ever in the history of Rugbeh League tho..

No it won't ..it'll be like every other pre season ..but they will have trained harder ..have the greatest combinations ...happiest team ever ......and prepared to win the premiership undefeated without conceding a point ......

I reckon next year I dont know who plays alongside Brooks, but I will say if its JRey ,Mbye or AD,we will see a different Luke Brooks …he wont be stifled by Benji…

TT Brooks played alongside Benji in 2018 and 2019 and won Dally M Halfback of the year and Wests Tigers player of the year respectively. Brooks played with Reynolds 4 times this year for 0 try assists and 1 forced drop out, total.

I want Benji gone as much as anyone but it's not his fault Brooks has been out of form. He's been out of form because he's playing poorly.

You would think if that was true then 2020 should have seen Brooks step up even further instead of going backwards...

No. He’s gone backwards because he’s out of form and playing poorly. I’m saying it has nothing to do with Benji as he’s played well with him in 2018 and 2019. The ‘Benji stifling Brooks attack’ argument is nonsense.

Each to their own opinion avo,so why doesnt Madge drop him altogether if he is not performing to his best and to his salary,I know,we have no one else so lets perservere with the play makers we have got...one is out of form and the other cant defend and is about to retire...
No wonder we cant make the 8 and yet its Madges fault for picking them...

Definitely looked half a yard quicker the last couple of matches, so assuming that the ankle is just about right.

Adam Douihei at 5/8 with Brooks at half back is the best play for us. Madge recruited Douihei to Souths as a 5/8 and he was groomed to take over from Cody Walker as he was Broncos bound. Junior halfback/5/8 with Balmain and played fly half at high school in Rugby.

Good thing is he knows his limitations and where he needs to improve. I don’t think it’s injury related looks like he has grown in height over the last 3 years considerably. Takes the body a while to adjust strength and speed along with the injuries and lack of pre seasons.

Reynolds should be picked this weekend. Hopefully the fans give him the farewell he deserves.

Hope he plays and has one hell of a blinder so some other clubs might get interested in his services for next year, because except for Lithgow Workies who are willing to pay 100 bucks a week there is no interest

I’ll talk to my local club in group 6. We can offer Reynolds $200 a game and a carton of VB as a sign on fee, we will contact his manager soon.

He's my choice for 6 next season.

He was bought here to be our long term 6, but then Benji got another year and he was given first crack at fullback, so it makes perfect sense to play him there
