Can anyone show evidence Potter can coach?

Fair question, where is the evidence?

In England, he took over a gun team from Daniel Anderson and promptly (quote) " Saints failed to win a trophy - for the first time since 2003 - in Potter's first season"

He went to Bradford and was sacked in difficult circumstances. Nevertheless, Matt Elliot had been there previously and won everything. Even royce simmons won at st helens.

His only real success was in France with a tonne of Aussie players using an allowance that meant Catalans could field more imports than any other ESL team. You or I could win over there with 13 ex NRL players. Even then, they basically just bashed it up and won via size. No real innovation. Not reasons that will translate to the NRL.

Have we seen any innovative tactics this season? Any passion? Any games where we have outcoached the other team? Be honest. Any post game pressers where he doesn't look stunned and lost. Be honest.

Yes, it has been a tough season and he has had a hard time. But waiting until we are 0 and 6 next season and then deciding he can't coach will be a disaster. We need to decide right now if we have seen 'anything' that suggests he can cut it at NRL level.

I am old enough to remember him as a player. He was solid and genuine. Not skilled, but he managed to jag some dally Ms and was positionally very good for a fullback lacking pace. But he was never elite or the type of bloke who you thought had a great footy IQ.

For those who rate him, fire away. What makes you think he can coach at NRL level successfully?( dont just use the clean out etc. the player signings and cuts have all been Mayer)

You forgot to mention potter was 2012 super league coach of the year. You need to research more champ.

If that award counted for anything, matt elliot would be wayne bennet.

Willie Peters won their 'player of the year award' once also. As did a 33 year old ben galea.

I.e. pommy awards don't count for much.

Converserly, Robinson was incredibly innovative over there. Brought in new techniques that were ahead of the game even here.

Again, show some empirical stuff. Find some techniques or methods he brought in. Find some senior players who really rated him.

Millward was a god at st helens, and he was a complete failure in the NRL.

Re give him his own assistants, problem is then that we hire two or three more blokes who need to be fired if Mick can't cut it by june next year.

Sound familiar?

**A trophyless year for the first time since 2003 was another catalyst to Potter's critics abusing and slating his appointment, with even rumours of rifts within the changing rooms.

2010 was the year that saw Potter surrender to his critics and leave St Helens. Criticisms from club legends like Paul Sculthorpe and Sean Long regarding his personal skills with the fans, as well as the continued fan rejection saw him let his contract run out**

I hear by knight you sir largeboldylot
You can harness the true power of large bold text. Use it wisely sir. Using large bold like that is a gift not a curse. Remember that my son.

I agree Royce and always have agreed on this topic. There are only a few of us that do though so perpare yourself.

Royce and Stryker I'm also another who believes this. He is the worst coach in history of using the interchange! For some reason people think he is a messiah. I also think he is a good bloke and we can't afford to be paying 3 coaches but more importantly we can't start horribly next year. A lot of people are assuming brooks is going to kill it from the start and that of Course will be at king micks doing!! We are in a mess but Mick Potter is not the bloke to get us out of it unfortunately

Well said. I had my doubts on His ability to get the most out of the players.
He either can't get the players to lift for him or they wont play for him. He seems to lack any communication skills and always looks flustered.

Who else was considered?
Matt Parish
Kevvie Walters
Barrett?

I forget the rest.

You cannot get a tradesman when you can only pay for an apprentice

Well the look on Benji's face in post match interview when Potter was asked if he will be there next week says it all, the club is in crisis and Potter does not seem able to motivate his players, one or both must go; along with terrible management I fear the end is near.

The NRL can not afford to loose the Tiger brand; they will simply move in and take over when the club can not meet their financial obligations, which will be soon.

I thought the Terry Lamb year was our worst, this one is strongly challenging it.

Sad thing, Sheens was the 1st accomplished coach willing to take on the Tigers, look what they did to him. If he was good enough to sign for years he was good enough to finish out his contract.

I haven't seen anything that enthuses me either. The alarm bells rang the night he gave Robbie a rest right when we needed him out there. Also, the best part about Wests Tigers and made us so popular was our flair in attack ….. That's all gone now.

well if that is the best he can come up with in terms of defence and attack then show him the door now.
that has to be the worst wide defence i have ever seen, every time they went wide they looked like scoring thank god it was only parra we were playing.and he said he had worked hard in the off season on defence, what where they working on cream puffs.
then in attack parra ran at us with vigor we walk to the line and allways back into the markers, there is no pattern to his attack whats so ever.
and why the hell would u leave sirro sitting on the bench till 1/2 way into the second 1/2 while having benji and anasta out there he has no idea i guess.
SORRY POTTER I WAS WITH U BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH TIME TO GO!!!!

But the basis of competetive rugby league is defence….good defence regulalry wins you games and premierships...weve never had that, you score 30- well score 32.
Pretty boy footy.....thats tag and touch, sevens, nines...not NRL

I think its pretty poor pointing the finger at one bloke who was always on a hiding to nothing

You want competetiveness.....get a Hasler or bellamy.....you want a cleanout and start again....get a rookie, but dont get the latter and expect the former results

I thought his calm approach was an asset earlier on but now i'm not so sure.

Coaches gets teams to play a particular way and a particular style. there's nothing really apart from the inevitable hail mary kick on the last tackle.

what about ricky stuart though .11 losses on the trot and not a word about his position in the future. He certainly is a protected species.

A win for potter would be a great tonic for us all,but I don't know where it is going to come from.

The striking thing is that, aside from a few sarcastic jibes, no one can say anything positive about Potter.

Yes, the young players have shown flashes. But there is some enormous talent amongst them and you would expect them to do okay in spurts under any coach. Simona has shown flashes, but they are natural talent stuff, he still has no idea how to defend. Come to think of it, we have had an entire season of our centers rushing up on one side and being easily beaten by opposition teams. Doesnt matter if it is is Lawry or Simona, same rush up and out of the line D conceding tries. Has Potter made any adjustments? No. None.

I am NOT just trying to take a shot at the bloke fellas. I would be happy if he succeeded. It is just that there is not much to suggest he will. It is like when you hear about a new horse and follow it as everyone says it goes okay. Then suddenly it has had ten starts and is still yet to show anything. You start to realise it is a dud. The horse gets moved from the city to easier races outside of saturday class and still doesn't win. You then realise it has nothing.

To borrow another poster's anaolgy, last night Potter came up against a maiden field at Wyong. The three month losing Eels and a tactically inept Ricky Stuart.

And Potter got beaten. He just lost a maiden at Wyong.

It is time to legitimately doubt the bloke IMO.
