The big shock for me is Matuilino was on 800k. 800k??? Are we serious? Wasn't a terrible player for us but that is absolutely crazy money for a serviceable, replaceable prop who had knee problems. What the hell is this front office doing? I don't care if it was Cleary's decision, no one should allow that to be approved. Along with the big money signing of Reynolds, Packer and to a lesser extent Mbye, I don't have any faith in who we sign next or the contracts we're willing to dish out. This is administrative incompetence beyond any period in wests tigers history.

Fairly sure that 800 was backended. 600 then 700 then 800. $2 million odd all up.

But, yes, a terrible deal.

So medically retired means he gets his contracted money, paid by insurer. Right?

Agreed, but I have faith that Maguire wont offer crazy money contracts to average players. He will take bad managment out of the equation.

I can’t be too critical back then. We were rebounding from some pretty average situations. I think we paid what we had to pay to get experienced players to the club. We were on the nose I’d reckon. Don’t believe that should be the case now

Yep.

And does not count for a cent on our cap.

As it turned out, having the majority of his pay at the end of the deal (miraculously) worked out for us for once. I said before that this decision would make or break our next two seasons. Would have been a disaster to be stuck with him not playing AND that shocking deal on the cap.

Luck has gone our way, at last 🙂

Not necessarily...NRL have ruled his contract money comes off our cap as the did with Watmough for Parra...the insrance company may not pay if they deem it pre existing...
y tin foil theory is they did it for us so they can do the same for Souffs with Burghi...so no one screams...

There were people on here that were adamant that Matulino was on half of that reported figure.
It was reported $750 in the papers when he signed, and combined with Packers salary - their was a reason why some of us were so frustrated with their less than impressive performances.
Ultimately Cleary' s roster - how much reign he had over the cap when signing the players - not sure.

We need this x3 more (reynolds, packer, mcqueen)

Panic buying. Either a better/more experineced coach or CEO would have been patient. I agree we're in a much better position now.

So it doesn’t effect our cap but we may still have to part with cash (outside of our cap allotment) if insurance don’t pay?

Wow! Paying a player from extra money. Makes me want to go buy a latte in Bondi!

Yep as Parra did with Watmough...

Watmough was very different though. He was broken down and barely able to play before Parra gave him a massive deal, and they were show later to have done basically no due diligence. He was not even cleared before they signed him.

Big Ben got through 1.5 seasons and, hopefully, we got all the insurance done properly.

Have you tried to get money out of insurance companies...

NRL did it for Watmough but knocked back Stewart and Mattie...lol@Manly..

The good thing is regardless Matulino comes of our Cap
