Just reliving the glory of my earlier predictions on the Matulino, reynolds and packer signings. many saying we should just be positive here were the same ones doing so back then too. Sorry to be a j*rk. This is the thread I wrote on the signings:

https://weststigersforum.com/topic/26083/doubts-about-latest-signings?page=1

Most called me pessimistic back then too.

I think generally people want to feel like stuff the club does is positive. I guess that's nice. Most were really positive about signing Packer and Reynolds and Matulino. I remember writing about the fact they were injury prone and that Reynolds' contract was too much and too long and that none of them were top level players anymore. I'm sounding like a know all, but I just don't always feel like the club makes very good decisions and so I tend to be a bit sceptical. I don't think this move helps us because we get nothing from it. So why act now? Getting Matulino medically retired was great news. I'd also be really pleased to release Packer and Reynolds. But releasing Matterson gains nothing.

No point starting the new year with player/ coach tension let alone tension within the squad - and Matterson clearly made no attempt to smooth things over. The media won't let stories like that go and we have been down that path before - it derails seasons. Matterson was not worth keeping for any amount.

I definitely agree with part of this post....

What did people expect us to get for him? Trades like that don't really happen in the NRL! and once you try to get a club to pay you compensation for him you are adding to his price and making him not an attractive option to other clubs.

Moylan for Maloney
Bennett for seibold
Cleary for cash

from dr. google:
Lane for Faitala-Mariner
Uate for Buhrer

Maybe doesn't happen much, but it does happen. My earlier suggestion is that a club should take on the majority of the contract of either Russel Packer or Josh Reynolds in exchange for taking Matterson.

G'day @Telltails: I gotta disagree re "Matterson was not worth keeping for any amount".

According to what The Barry, a 'Roar' Guru said in his article if correct...Matterson was no. 1 for 2nd rowers this year averaging 131 run metres per game combined with on average 36 tackles per game, Also no.1 for post-contact metres.

Unlike Michelle Moses, Matterson was dedicated and decent enough to play his heart out in every game for Our Wests Tigers this year.

So What happened?

How could we let a player with his talent slip through our fingers?

All the talk of 'we're gonna play hardball with Matterson by not giving him $1 more than his contracted amount until at least the end of 2020, we'll show him who's boss'.

To me, it doesn't seem to have worked out in our favour.

From what we have been told, it appears to be no one either bothered or was capable of sitting down and talking/appealing to Matterson's decency directly, to work out a deal that would work for him and Us. The result...it appears very likely 'we' have lost a great talent and some other bugger will gain a great talent.

I may be completely wrong, but I still feel there is something? that as yet has not been said with regard to Ryan Matterson not being at Wests Tigers next year :cherries: :church: :snowman_without_snow:

Are all you people bagging the club for letting Matterson go for ‘nothing’ forgetting about the impending WTF signing we are getting? Obviously you haven’t been reading the posts of those who actually know something about what WT management is doing behind the scenes. I’m pretty certain Matterson wasn’t let go for absolutely nothing in return. Let’s just wait and see what eventuates in the coming weeks. I’m hoping Matterson will soon just become a distant memory.

We have 1.7 million dollars to spend. Enough cash to throw at anyone we wanted. We could offer the whole lot to Fifita and he’d be ours. And the forum still finds a way to wallow 😒

@MAGPIES1963 I don't pretend to know what caused the dissent - if in fact there was a problem at all - but once the media gets hold of a story like this one, rumours and truth don't vary much.
The level of disruption for keeping one player is just not worth it my opinion, even one like Matterson, especially if there is any suggestion that he would rather be playing for someone else.
Prefer that it hadnt played out this way, but I am comfortable with how the club has responded.

Last post on this from me on this issue and you all can get back to patting the club on the back for negotiating a brilliant settlement of nothing.

Signing Fifita on 1.7 mil a year contract would be stupid and I would wallow. I feel we had a lot longer to make a decision on Matterson. Let the offseason start, get preseason going, move into next year. If it still hasn't worked out then and no one's offered anything then you can grant him a release and still collect your nothing then. By then, he'd have been holding out, damaging his reputation and not getting paid. other players would look at that and think that's not such a good idea. As it is, Matterson's had a whinge to his manager, skipped training, had a nice holiday and been rewarded with a release. That'll show the next player who tries a stunt like this!

The 400k saved on releasing Matterson isn't going to go directly to a player we're buying now as we already have freed up 1.3 million and we're not going to spend all of our cap now anyway.

So if you're scared about the daily telegraph writing big scary articles about you maybe you have to act now, but who cares what the press writes?

People keep talking about the players being upset with him, does that mean they're going to train less hard? Would there be no way of explaining the strategy to the players?

It just seems to me like we gain nothing by releasing him and it only harms us when this situation arises in the future. Giving Moses his release two years ago got us nothing and weakened wests tigers contracts. Releasing Matterson for nothing as well only damages the strength of our contracts more. Why would another team offer us something next time when they know how spineless we are? What's to stop a player from having a similar whinge when they see Matterson and Moses go on to have big contracts and representative success at other clubs after leaving our club? It's just a stupid shortsighted move by our club that resolves the issue today, but creates bigger hassles for us next time around.

At some point you have to wear a bit of discomfort to make things better. A bit of patience and conviction by the club would have really helped here. This isn't the Cleary situation. A coach who wants to be elsewhere stuffs up all of recruitment, training and decision making. Cleary had to go and we made that situation work and actually got compensation despite needing to move on from Cleary. Having a disgruntled player on the sideline isn't the same problem. New signings aren't justification for getting rid of Matterson for nothing. The two things don't correlate.

That's not such a bad idea - offer 4.5 mil over 3 years - we have the money - if he comes great - if he doesn't it certainly pushes his price up on the market that other clubs will have to match.

Before you go, can you tell us what you are basing this theory of us getting nothing on?

We have 5 spots we have to fill. If we only have $1.7m to spend, that’s an average of $340,000 per spot. Not a lot. Assuming we sign 2-3 on min wage, that leaves perhaps $1.2 across 2 decent signings. We do not have the cash to spending $1m on a marquee signing, unless we move on the likes of Reynolds and/or McQueen.

We do have talent on there way thru in the CC and JF

Good morning @Telltails: I completely agree with you regarding keeping an unhappy player.

But it just worries me a bit to know we can't keep a player of his ability happy, and in the long run, I guess there are a thousand reasons that could contribute to that unhappiness.

But thinking about it just now [I'm a bit bloomin slow sometimes, my wife would probably say...all the time] I now agree with a lot of posters on here that he has done a Cleary, and come here knowing we were just a stepping stone along the path to his actual dream-team.

Thank you Telltails :+1: you've just solved the problem for me personally and I'm now gonna forget about him, as once again I agree with what a lot of our posters have been saying for a long time, he is a bum!!!...Have a happy and peaceful Christmas :snowman_without_snow: :snowflake: :santa:

Very well said @watersider: you have stated your case with plenty of passion, so good on yuh for doing that.

For me personally, I now feel Wests Tigers will have gained a lot from this Matterson episode, so Madge and Pascoe won't let us get into a similar situation again.

Have a great Christmas watersider :snowman: :man-surfing: :cherries: :crab: :church: :icecream: :santa: :turkey: :christmas_tree:
