Regarding the continuing training - I agree it’s probably over the top but these blokes just have to suck it up. The mentality of some young elite athletes drives me nuts. I love listening to stories of blokes who went the extra yards. Recently listened to Matty Johns talking about him and Joey spending more time doing extras than in training. Craig Johnstone hitting 10000 balls a day. Brett Finch saying how he was better prepared than anyone because his natural talent was low. Great stuff. WE HAVE A COACH MADE OF THIS STUFF. If he says train - then friggen we’ll train because if you do you might actually win some games and stop disappointing thousands of loyal fans!!!

We need to get into that mentality. Train like we're still playing.

Seem to recall that Sheens used to make the team train until the GF. It's not new.

Ricky Stuart overtrained Canberra and they burnt out every year.

He let them have more time off this time and they are top4.

This is not 1963. More training / summer heat does not equal success.

We should look at NFL and how they do it.

aaaand that is why they didn't make the finals, there attitude is off, you can bet it was some of those softy players eg Marsters, MCK, Jennings etc. Madge has done a great job in making them train till GF day.

More time off? This club is on holiday every year second week of September for eight years. Anymore time off and they might as well go on the dole.

Training up to the GF goes all the way back to Sheens..it's nothing new..

Mate, if were in finals we would be running sets, preparing for certain teams, blokes would be resting ailments and doing video sessions.....they would NOT be doing physical training, runnings hills and extra gym work:

Training like our blokes will be doing is nuts.

I have been a big supporter of Madge on these forums, but he burnt out Souths players/ alienated the whole senior group. Fact.

This has the potential to end badly.

That stuff is for pre-season...

They will be training as in the regular season...Anyone in rehab or needs rehab will be in rehab...

If they object to that...Well...it will show even more who needs to go..

Hey I agree with you guys geo....like him or not Maguire is the coach and he call the shots...the problem is most of the players these days are spoon fed premadonas, who bung on stinks like we are seeing atm, the moment things don't go their way

And its not as if they have other jobs to go to except for playing Xbox.

Like Geo just said, im sure back in the day that Sheens made them train to GF weekend before they had their 2 month annual leave to get up to hi-jinx in Bali and the U.S.

How will they train like regular season? Reg season involves video work, guys have sessions off to keep their bodies fresh for game day, backs and forwards get different stuff to focus on for the particular opponent.

And who is going to train? People here saying "serves them right, need to be tougher!!!" etc etc..............well who needs to be tougher? Packer? He won't be training. Mattalino? He won't be training. Josh? McQueen? Both are being offloaded and last thing we need is them breaking down in a meaningless session.

So, who is this going to benefit? Alex Twal? The same young prop who carried the front row for half the season and then, clearly, was burnt out. Yeah, him doing six more weeks will help.

This is prehistoric thinking. Footy has changed. We need to modernise. Do what the NFL does and put weight, body fat levels, contract bonuses all based on fitness...players get time off, but have to stay in shape as a result.

The NFL players union negotiated for limits on training loads, most coaches do not like it!

I’m
Shine the NRL players union trying that on

Hearing Wests Tigers plan to train until grand final day has been scuttled by rules agreed with players union. Can only train for two weeks and must then take a break
