I don’t get it?

The joke is that Matterson clearly didn't attend a day of beers and bowls with his team mates. To highlight the situation McQueen has poorly photoshopped Matterson into the picture.

I bet he wasn't the only one .....Benji was overseas

**And as for McQueen ....can I point out a fact .....Matterson was getting only 25 k more a season than McQueen if the reported figures are correct**

**I know which money was far better spent .....and then I guess you might see Matterson's frustration**

The only person Matto should be frustrated with is his manager. Unless the manager lied and told him something else. Either way, he signed the deal.

Maybe if the club was being proactive ( as they have done in the past with other players ) they could of sat him down mid season and upgraded him for 2021 for example

I know everyone wants to hunt him down , but if your being honest we were paying Great Wall Prices for a Hi Lux performances

This is rubbish Happy. If this is what the game has come to, then caveats on earnings should be written into the contract in the first place. Once again, if not, then the fault lies with the player managers and players themselves. You can't expect anyone, or any club to have a written agreement, then up it because the player is playing well (as the player and club would both want) through good coaching. A simple line in the sand would be if said player isn't happy, and the club agrees, then they can leave under terms of existing contract to another club with a year of no first grade and a transfer fee to the club. Maybe 20-30% All of which has been said before.

Well if you think we are going to replace Matterson with Matterson on the 375 k ( or even the 450 k ) you are dreaming

his performances (in my opinion ) were of a 600 k a season player , you think we will a 600 k player in return for Matterson people are kidding themselves

The club could have sat him down and said thanks to Ivan our cap is full, we want you here long term and will reward you maybe 3rd year or definitely next contract

Yep they could have but geez that is a bit early isn't it. He is on a 3 year contract with an upgrade next year anyway. It just seems so reactionary.

We did it with one of our outside backs within the last 2 years who we were concerned might leave

Might have Nofo ......brain is too full at the moment

I agree with this. I can't see how this deal works out for anyone actually. I wonder what club will sign him for next year when he already has a contract with us. I can't see why we would let him go unless we get a player of the same level and that is going to be difficult.

That leaves the kicking stones approach for Matterson and he already looks bad. I suppose clubs won't care about this. They will care that he is under contract to us for the next 2 years.

6 months into a new 3 year contract. Honestly I really doubt that. Sure you upgrade players prior to the end of their contract. You even give them some extra money at the end of the year. 6 months into his contract though doesn't sound right.

Absolutely beside the point. It's about an agreement. The agreement was in place for the club to provide the guidance and for him to play to the best of his ability. His ability has improved due to the guidance provided imo. He is now on the cusp of rep honours along with the bonuses that come with that honour. He however is proving anything but honourable. In the end, is it really worth it?

I guess my question is if he stays at the club, how does he turn it around and get the fans off his back if in fact he is here long term? What would it take? A lot I know, but how would the fans forgive him because they certainly won't forget.....

true, but he also didn't sook in his very first year about wanting more money, led us to a premiership and destroyed his shoulder however many times while playing....Matterson has yet to do any of these things

If he performed and said he loved the club the whole situation would turn around.

Matterson is no longer any good for us, If a swap is not available, he should at best be picked a #21 and then released for C Cup every week , you cannot let him and his attitude stand in the way of another player who is prepared to put in for the team in first grade.

Yep. Let's see what his value is like after two years playing reserve grade.
At some point he's gonna have to suck it up and perform at his best if he wants a big pay on his next contract (wherever that may be).

knowing the slimy he is he would take the club to court and say it was a restraint of trade and potential future earnings...then see how much other clubs would be offering

Clubs cant work under a salary cap if players are constantly trying to modify their salaries. Clubs require some level of expenditure certainty year on year.

Otherwise it's just shifting sands.

Not really. If the clubs can sign contracts and then renege on those contracts it's fine. This is actually something that should be raised to the players union. If the players they represent continually show no integrity towards their contracts they cannot expect the clubs to honor contracts.

Taumalolo gets injured in year 6 of his contract and going forward is only worth 1/2 his current salary. No worries we just pay him what he is worth. This would also solve our long term Cleary contracts.

If anyone is interested, Robbie has his say on the Ryan Matterson situation at 30:20, says he doesn't think Matterson will be here next season.

@Madge Thank you for that, that was really good. I'm not the biggest Robbie fan, but he expressed himself very well there, and i think pretty much all of this forum would be 100% behind him on his comments.

He said a player has to earn his right to ask for big money, and that's by a lot more than one good year. If Matto had put in another good year next year, WT would probably have been looking to upgrade him on bigger money then for the future. But now, due to probably bad advice he has burnt his bridge at WT pretty much.

@TigerTiger It also elucidated the fact that is money based and not so much an issue with the coach. Which while it is said how its ended up, its pleasing knowing the coach isn't so much the culprit of this situation.

Poor form from his manager and weak from Matterson.

Great chat. Robbie spot on about contracts/ Ryan Matterson - and losing Teddy. Very enjoyable.
