Again, have to say that Tigers didn't do particularly well in this situation. I don't think they should have released him. It's not a good situation but the club had a long time between now and the season opener to work out a trade. Matterson is a valuable player and would be worth something. Presumably clubs figured the Tigers were bluffing and would release him prior to November 1st so weren't willing to offer much for him. They were right. If Matterson doesn't turn up to train then you fine him and sit him out. If players have a problem with him playing, they need to get over it. If it has salary cap consequences then so be it. At least get a solid young player or a workmanlike player. Getting nothing shows we're weak, and everyone can and does walk all over us. Bad decision.

So what you’re saying is hold onto a player that won’t be here next season to gain an advantage on another club that wants him, at the detriment of picking up a player in the “hot” trading period that will add something to our team for the upcoming season?!?

Makes perfect sense!!!

I'm saying we try to get some value out of Matterson and take a stand to make it clear that you can't do this at our club. He can either play for us or not play. If we get a good trade then you do that, even any sort of value, but not until then.

Who are we going to sign that is going to make our club a premiership threat this offseason? And why does releasing Matterson enable this? Are we clearing Matterson to pay a player 1.7 million instead of 1.3 million a season? And this 'hot' trading period has been so good for us in the past when we signed...????

Tigers need to develop juniors and pickup players looking for opportunities at other clubs. Whether we have Matterson or not doesn't hinder that effort. He was on a good contract for us, make him play or make him sit.

Just caving is a sign to everyone that the club is weak. This release was pointless.

Just wish some people would just first see how all this plays out before making outlandish statements about what the club did and did not do right or wrong.
Guess you guys just never played poker .... where you have to be patient to get results.

How about we let the cards fall before we start butchering the management?

Make a stand for what, he didn’t want to be here and by all reports the players didn’t want him here after his tantrum either, what benefit did we have in keeping him?

The real benefit we had was in releasing him to give us the opportunity of getting a quality player that wants to play for the club.

Tigers fans know how to be patient. I'd say the club acted impatiently. But I suppose with the incredible track record of tigers management we can be confident they've once again triumphed over adversity and steered us back to the hallowed path.

Given how the club handled Cleary’s exit, i don’t see any reason to wallow in pessimism

I'm not pessimistic, I just don't rate releasing a player for nothing when he has value on the market. So I think we trade him for something. Either that or he stops being a sook, apologises and shows up to play because he can't get released. But I'm not pessimistic. I like Madge, I like benji and we're one of 16 teams competing in a competition for 8 places where we need to only win about half our matches and the whole comp is rigged with a salary cap to make it more even. And yet we've only made the finals, in other words won more than half our games, about 3 times in 20 years. So we're every chance of being competitive next year, but I don't see moves like this helping us much.

Releasing Matterson doesn't enable or inhibit the signing of new players. Going by the reports it means we have 1.7 million to spend now rather than 1.3 million. If we're looking to spend all of our salary cap in the next week I'd suggest we be a little more measured in our approach to recruitment.

You can wallow with the water buffalo or fly with the Eagles. I sacked 3 of my best performers as their attitude was killing the team. They are replaceable everyone is your culture and the organisation has to come first. Teams with great talent can fall apart when there is a shock event look at the Dragons.

Come on mate are you serious?!? So you would rather keep a player for leverage and pay that player until said leverage comes to fruition on the assumption we are going to release him in the end anyway?? You do realise from Nov 1 we need to start paying Matterson?? How do we benefit from that??

The rumours doing the rounds have been that the rest of the playing group was filthy with him. If that’s the case and the other 29 blokes in the squad don’t want him around why would you keep him?

I’d say that there’s every possibility that had the club forced him to stay it would have turned out as bad for the people around him is it would for Matterson himself.

Spot on Tyga, nobody is bigger than the company or club!!

I'm not really worried about what the playing group thinks. If they're upset with the coach, I don't want that to be a reason to sack him. I'm also not worried about paying Matterson's salary. We're currently paying packer twice as much. And he has to play if he wants to be paid. Requesting compensation from a team who wants to take our contracted player is reasonable and correct. Expecting Matterson to honour his contract is also correct. If he'd prefer to sit out, we won't be paying him. What's the rush to get rid of him? Are we desperate to get nothing for him? We could get nothing for him anytime. Why not get nothing for him later. Or do we need to cash in our nothing now?

I applaud the clubs handling of the Matterson exit. Remained quiet throughout and didn't present as desperate. If anything it showed strength not weakness.

Bit disappointing that it appears we got nothing else out of this besides freeing up a heap of cash.

Trust that the sensitivity surrounding this matter would ensure some level of confidentiality. I believe salary cap relief more than his current contract value would be most practical.

I tend to think that at the least, WT didn't have to pay his last monthly payment or two for giving him the release. It was obviously untenable, so good riddance either way.

What a great wall hanging idea.

I think generally people want to feel like stuff the club does is positive. I guess that's nice. Most were really positive about signing Packer and Reynolds and Matulino. I remember writing about the fact they were injury prone and that Reynolds' contract was too much and too long and that none of them were top level players anymore. I'm sounding like a know all, but I just don't always feel like the club makes very good decisions and so I tend to be a bit sceptical. I don't think this move helps us because we get nothing from it. So why act now? Getting Matulino medically retired was great news. I'd also be really pleased to release Packer and Reynolds. But releasing Matterson gains nothing.
