Confirmed: Matulino to hang up boots after career ending knee injury.

@WT2K For what it is worth my wife teachers one of his children to swim and was informed that his dad was retiring from footy.

The Kiwi international played 13 games this year, but since a knee injury in Round 14 has not been seen in Tigers colours.

Such was the severity of the injury, there was talk the club might look to medically retire him.

It is understood that the club have now lodged paperwork with the NRL to do just that.

In doing so, the Tigers can free up significant cap space to the tune of $800,000, which would allow them to re-sign club favourites Benji Marshall and Chris Lawrence who are both off-contract.

Haha, I thought the same thing. Would be handy if we could snare a quality prop for that.

Article suggested could upgrade Matterson also. But agree, if paying that for the two you mentioned... We have serious issues lol

@TopTiger The foxsports reporter is not too well informed about the salaries of Benji and Lawrence. however I hope he is well informed abot the $800,00 that could be freed up due to Matulino.

Has to be embellished. I don't see Matulino on 800k. I'd have thought 600 at the absolute most. Then again, Cleary signed him so who knows.

Might be 800K over the remaining two years? Was he on until 2021 or next year?

Yeah sweet, 800K seems steep for the one year.

I reckon.. Re-signing Benji (which was on the cards anyway) and Lawrence doesn't really spark excitement. It's a bit like winning the lottery and saying you're going to pay the bills with it. Yay!

Wouldn't be taking much notice of them mentioning those two. They're just putting two a two together and coming up with 6. Anyway, hopefully we can get the medical retirement approved.

$500-550k is probably more accurate

Wish Ben the best. I’d be shocked if we can get the NRL and presumably the insurer to both rubber stamp this though. Also how is the Matto thing taking an intriguing turn if under the RLPA rules he doesn’t have to show up to training at this point?

As I understand, the RLPA said we COULD make them train for 2 weeks after their last game.

Maybe the 800k figure is from next year's salary plus they backdate any post-injury salary and exclude it from the cap, i.e. Round 14 to now is excluded from the salary cap. Dunno, just throwing out some theories.
