Because they lose any bargaining power, he still has a contract and will get payed regardless of ability to take the field, will just have to keep turning up and rehabing. Retire of your own accord and may end up foregoing all future payments.

If a player feels he must retire because he can no longer fulfil his playing commitments and this is backed up by medical evidence of his long term injury - how can the NRL rule otherwise. The Club should be entitled to deduct him from the cap total - it seems pretty simple to me.

I was only thinking yesterday listening to the GF that should WT be refused a medical retirement for Matulino because it was pre-existing when signed that Pascoe could be in a world of trouble over his job. As CEO and final clearance signature on contracts he should have ensured medical clearances were undertaken before Mats was recruited. If the rumour is true that medical clearances were not sought by Cleary and Egan during recruitment negotiations and they went ahead and offered such a high value contract, it was Pascoe's duty to ensure normal practices were adhered to. If he went along with allegedly not worrying about a medical clearance, and this blows up in our face, I think his position as CEO becomes untenable.

Last week we didnt hear about the result of NRL HQ pontifications, this week we should since the GF is now done and dusted and any negative decision on WT appeal will take the focus off referee howlers in GF.

Yeah, if he retires, that's how it works, just like with Inglis. It doesn't count against the cap because we're not paying him. However, if the insurers are going to be paying him instead of us, they'll need to be convinced he can't play again and the condition wasn't pre-existing.

Issue is money.

If Mats retires he forfeits the $$ owed to him, if he is medically retired he gets paid that amount & we get cap relief.

If the rumor is true that Mattalino failed a medical with another club and that Cleary signed him long term without a medical........which Pascoe rubber stamped...then Pascoe has to be fired.
