Confirmed: Matulino to hang up boots after career ending knee injury.

Agree but they are reactionary and need to set penalties in place for on and off field indiscretions so players know if they step out of line they will know what to expect as a minimum

Haven't they already done that wrt rules for standing players down for off-field incidents?

My concern would be the sheer number of possible off-field incidents you'd have to set guidelines for. NRL already cops heat for the judiciary grading system which only deals with the much smaller set of on-field indiscretions. Why can't you just judge each off-field case on its own merits?

I don’t think the NRL is specifically out to get anyone. I just think there are too many incompetent people in positions of power/influence at HQ that lack leadership, vision, credibility, consistency and execution. The medical retirement process is one such example of this.

Am I the only one that is feeling frustrated with this... All over the media today is about Sam B and been medical retired in the next few days (of course before Nov 1st so Souths can buy replacement) but we have been waiting for weeks for Mats outcome..:rage: :rage:
To make things worse I don't see how he can be classed as medical retired considering he has had should problems for years and even his brother said so himself... Even if they don't approve him for this they will get him to retire and he would be given a VERY WELL paid job to ensure he still gets his funds...

I can only hope we have been advised of the Mats decision already and we are keeping it quite until we sign a player etc..

@Sausagesorcerer .. Joke ... these statement are from Fox sports below..

**"reports the 30-year-old will be retired on medical grounds due to a chronic shoulder injury that hampered his 2019 season.

The Rabbitohs are said to be working with the NRL to see what amount of Burgess’ contract will be exempt from the salary cap over the coming years."** They did the same with Greg Inglis last year...

They signed him to a 4 years deal for 1 mil + per year and knew he has shoulder problems but can just retire him and not even blink... Yet we have to put a massive case together with lawyers for Mats and than cross our fingers that the NRL give us a break and approve..

All we know so far is that Burgess is being forced into retirement.

We don't know if/when he will be medically retired and cap space freed, only that Souths are trying to medically retire him (of course, otherwise they're down a million a year).

Considering it was a recently signed deal and the player has an extensive history of shoulder injuries you'd think his chances are much poorer than ours.

Having picked up an infection following shoulder surgery a few months ago, Burgess apparently has only 25 per cent bone in one of his shoulders.

Souths will be approved, that is a certainty.

It will be based on the infection as that happened post contract.

Out issues with Ben is, if true, his injuries were there before signing. HUGE decision which will make or break our next two seasons IMO.

It's far from a certainty. A player with chronic shoulder injuries has a much higher chance of one of these injuries having long lasting impacts and being potentially career ending. If he'd never had a shoulder injury then yes it would be a dead cert.

I wouldn't think so BB - it is the "Pride of the League" - special case I'm afraid, Toddy will say. We will have to medically retire Sammy Baby and I will have to write him a reference.

Yes, but it seems souths will not claim it on a shoulder injury (of which he has a long history)

But rather claim it on the infection which destroyed the bone.

Our club has to be aggressive with this.

We can't just sit back for months whilst the player market dries up. No way the Rorters would be waiting like this.

Get big Barry onto it and have him actually apply some pressure / actually do something.

Well, he was doing something at the races the other day. So, he is alive.

Maybe he has just forgotten he works for Wests also. Easy to do when you have as many cushy corporate jobs / board positions as Barry does...

It's not as simple as that. They're inter-related injuries. Someone without chronic shoulder injuries would be far less likely to get an infection. The infection wasn't pre-existing, but the issue which created the need for surgery which led to infection was pre-existing. Insurance companies are stingy.

Seeing pictures of Sam carrying random girls on his shoulders from two days ago won't exactly help his case that he's lost so much strength in his shoulder either.

I think all medical retirement cases will be determined by the end of the month.

Tomorrow?

@ElleryHanley I think it's a reasonable time frame to expect a decision. Of course the NRL will operate however they want. But we lodged paper work a month or two ago. Souths may not have even lodged the new forms yet about the infection.
If they take an extra week then we pay him a week's salary. He'll be getting paid anyway, and i think he'll be getting paid from us regardless. It's just our ability to claim his wage back on insurance and have it excluded from the cap which is in question.

He is doing something. He's having a tipple of some fine red and a flutter on the nags. Jolly good!

One key thing to remember is medical retirement is the first step.

If not granted, the player can simply retire and thus not be paid. Walk away....no money for him, none on the cap.

Ben = not a chance in hell he would do that.

Inglis = did so......and landed a cushy job for life as a result.

Burgess = if he gave up his money, no doubt he will
End up on Crowe's payroll as a bodyguard, extra in a big film etc. and get his money that way (NRL can't stop that after retirement)
