South Sydney are preparing to announce the immediate retirement of captain Sam Burgess as early as Wednesday afternoon. In what is set to be a sad end to one of the most decorated careers of the modern era, NRL.com understands a shoulder injury he suffered earlier in the year will bring a premature end to his playing days. The Englishman is overseas, however South Sydney officials are preparing to announce his exit from the game by the end of the rugby league financial year, which ends on Thursday night.

South Sydney will now work with the NRL to determine how much, if any, of his four-year deal (believed to be worth around $1 million a year) will count in the salary cap. In 2019, Burgess was a shadow of the player he once was as he battled through the pain of a shoulder injury that dogged him throughout the majority of the season. It comes after a NewsCorp report that Brisbane Broncos veteran Matt Gillett could also be forced into retirement as he battles his own shoulder problems.

Souths are yet to make an official statement on Burgess' predicament but it is expected to be on Wednesday. It's expected South Sydney will enter the market place for a high profile replacement, pending an NRL decision on the salary cap implications of Burgess' retirement. Brisbane's David Fifita is a genuine option for 2021, however the Rabbitohs could go after Ryan Matterson given his ugly break-up with the Wests Tigers.

Fox Sports has reported St George Illawarra's Tyson Frizell has been mentioned as a potential target given the uncertainty about his future at the Dragons.

Matto going to Souths would be a great fit. I really don't like Souths and he'd add to my dislike of them Beautifully.

@ElleryHanley Big Barry doing something ????

Well, he was doing something at the races the other day. So, he is alive.

Maybe he has just forgotten he works for Wests also. Easy to do when you have as many cushy corporate jobs / board positions as Barry does...

I don't think he works for us. I think the chairman's role is unpaid. Pascoe works for us though.

Tigers expect an answer next week. They are quietly confident the NRL will rule in their favour.

Marina Go was definitely unpaid so I'd assume it's the same for Barry, it was the same for all the independents in Go's time, can't speak for the others

This was apparently taken a few days ago in Cabo and recently published in New Idea (no i'm not a reader).

Doesn't seem to have too much trouble shopping around...

@Spartan117 The players get the money as per their contract, unless they voluntarily choose to terminate the contract of their own accord.

I think the clubs still pay the players anyway as per normal, but (if approved) the club can claim the insurance for a re-imbursement of the injured players salary for which this amount is then cap exempt. I don't think the club itself immediately stops paying for their players and the insurance company suddenly gives them the payout, hence it doesn't matter to the club if we start paying next year's salary for Mats as we would be doing so in any case. What we need to know is whether we can use his cap allotment on other players.

But i don't work in the NRL so they could have a different setup in place regarding insurance claims.

Having picked up an infection following shoulder surgery a few months ago, Burgess apparently has only 25 per cent bone in one of his shoulders.

Souths will be approved, that is a certainty.

It will be based on the infection as that happened post contract.

Out issues with Ben is, if true, his injuries were there before signing. HUGE decision which will make or break our next two seasons IMO.

It's far from a certainty. A player with chronic shoulder injuries has a much higher chance of one of these injuries having long lasting impacts and being potentially career ending. If he'd never had a shoulder injury then yes it would be a dead cert.

Yes, but it seems souths will not claim it on a shoulder injury (of which he has a long history)

But rather claim it on the infection which destroyed the bone.

It's not as simple as that. They're inter-related injuries. Someone without chronic shoulder injuries would be far less likely to get an infection. The infection wasn't pre-existing, but the issue which created the need for surgery which led to infection was pre-existing. Insurance companies are stingy.

I think all medical retirement cases will be determined by the end of the month

Tomorrow?

So does that mean, big sam announces his retirement today and the NRL will have a decision for souths tomorrow while we have been waiting for months

Had to laugh at one of the most decorated careers of the modern era. He won one comp and maybe a couple of individual awards, man of steel? Really jwh must be real jealous or wade Graham. Really it's a good career but not great...let's not make it something it's not.

@balmain-boy As for Insurance Policies I recall hearing (could've been a rumour - after all, we thrive on that over here) that Mats & Packer signed on with The Evil Ivan without having undergone Medicals. If that's so, then how would any Insurance Company cover them unless the premiums are thru the roof? Is this the real delay in getting Mats all clear cos there is no medical evidence?

@balmain-boy BREAKING NEWS Todd Greenberg has just announced that Souths will be granted a Medical remuneration deduction off the Salary Cap for Sam Burgess once certain conditions are met.
1. Passing a Rigorous Medical Test at the NRL's State of the Art Rehab Centre "FlexMexTech" in Cancun - STATUS - PASSED
2. Failing DUI Test after Mad Monday - STATUS - Awaiting results.
"Once the Failed DUI results are in, I will be providing Sam with a Reference so that his future will remain secure in whatever endeavour he seeks.
In the meantime, I am about to advertise for a Personal Bodyguard on November 1st."

souths get a gold covered pass again and we are still waiting the whole nrl is rigged towards the elite type clubs, this if true is bullshit,
