How about Donald asking what do you have to lose trying a drug (hydroxchloroquine) that experts warned should not be prescribed without robust testing regime? Idk Donald, maybe your life?

You do realise that it has already been tested and administered for over 50years fro malaria right? It has been PROVEN to be safe with a robust testing regime and 50years experience. What hasnt been totally proven so far is if it works on COVID, hence the what have you got to lose...

I recall the warning about Primaquine that it hadn't been approved for use but it was an effective drug against Vivax especially New Guinea acquired.

Mefloquine was the drug which many ADF veterans had difficulty with. It was sold as Lariam and I witnessed side effects in New Guinea. I refused to be prescribed Lariam and went with Doxycycline because I already had malaria.

Im not sure of the brand names, but my understanding of this drug is that it replaced the old quinine based drugs that were no longer used due to side effects and malarial resistance.

I always keep diet Tonic Water in the fridge when a chill comes.

I am in Metro Manila And that is Even less fun...just extended ECQ until 30 April..there is also a ban on sale of liquor ..add this to no NRL ?

I hope that ban on traveling to Manila is lifted soon because my wife still needs to get her visa so she can fly here(she is filipino).

Won’t happen at least until after 30April and see how the COVId-19 numbers end up here cause AU may block anyone travel to AU from Manila if they are bad. They have only just started any volume testing this week as had no test kits and started converting anything they can to makeshift hospitals cause they know once they start high volume testing the results will be bad.

It will be longer than that.
Opening for international travel won’t resume until either internationally this is under control or vaccine is available.

I dare say that you could gradually open up travel where countries have been able to suppress the virus. e.g. If Hong Kong and Australia had it under control, they could make an agreement to open it back up for direct flights only.

Would allow for the leisure industry to start back up, albeit with limited options.

If anything needs to happen our own tourist industry needs desperate help ...surely this has to be our main consideration in the short term

I trust no one ! Keep the boarders closed .. just as the Chinese students came in from multi countries paid for by our Criminal Universities .

Supermarkets are still open and there are options to buy food online and get Grab delivery. The biggest problem is the non work and non income people as they have taken and age to get $ support and food to them. Around 12M people. This will also be where all the virus will mostly be hiding and undiagnosed.

HK was an example. They are not mainland china....yet. I live there and trust their data. If they keep the borders closed with China, they could be an option.

Here is an example of HK's tracking - https://chp-dashboard.geodata.gov.hk/covid-19/en.html. It's good.

All I'm saying is that travel could be opened up gradually by looking at countries that have control over it (if we can trust their data)

Ok, smart guy. Tell me - what is wrong with reopening travel between 2 countries when their cases are known, tracked and isolated? That may be a while away, but I don't understand why you cannot do that.

My wife and her family are from the Philippines, so I understand Muffstars pain. They had a case down the street where a lady passed from "respiratory issues". She wasn't counted as a case because they couldn't test her.

I hope more aid can start to be sent that way in terms of food and supplies to support poorer communitie.

That’s part of the problem though, once you open it up to anywhere you effectively create a new border and one that you can’t directly control. Given the economic hit we are taking to get this under control I think we should be very cautious in re-opening travel and risking a further flare up. Get it under control locally, open business back up and then take stock of where the rest of the world is at before considering opening travel.

Well Hammertime (see how I didnt resort to childish name calling?), what I was responding to had nothing to do with travel between 2 countries where cases are known, tracked & isolated. It was in response to a posts by WT2019 and Muffstar about the Phillipines where the control of COVID is the opposite of known, tracked and isolated.

But to answer your question, there are less than a handful of countries that meet those parameters and even in the case of those countries (lets take HK & Singapore) there is no way of Aus knowing or controlling travel into those countries and therefore totally tracking potential cases coming into Australia.

By the way. This is my *opinion*, that I am sharing on a forum for discussion of this subject. Im not personally attacking you.

My wife and her family are from the Philippines, so I understand Muffstars pain. They had a case down the street where a lady passed from "respiratory issues". She wasn't counted as a case because they couldn't test her.

That further emphasises my *original* point that travel to and from there is unthinkable at the moment. Sucks for you and your wifes family, but these are tough times. I havent seen my kids for three weeks and it doesnt look like I will be seeing them for a long time.

Nothing stopping the air traffic of food and supplies to them right now. Freight is still flying internationally.

You could easily rescind that travel if the other country doesn't live up to the controls you're expecting and ensure that people are booking refundable trips. Remember, these countries have proven their ability to implement measures already and it's there in the data.

It's basically the reverse of how it was implemented.

We would have to start the industry somehow. Incrementally is the right way.

Your comments poke fun at people on the forum, even if you don't directly quote. That's the issue mate, talk about the scenario, not poking fun at peoples opinions. Otherwise, you come off with a massive chip on your shoulder.

The rest I responded below, but with food. I wasn't talking about the supply. I was talking about aid. They have food available, but soon some communities won't be able to afford it. There will need to be a bit of aid I dare say to certain countries.

Mate, I would suggest that has more to do with your interpretation of my position than what I am saying. Case in point is "Jacinda". Go back and re-read what I said about "Jacinda". I said that there were people here (and there were...was it you? I dont know) who were praising her approach over Australia's even though it was inferior (not an opinion, measurable, her restrictions were not as strict as Australia's at the time) and the cold data clearly shows that they have not been as successful as Australia at controlling it despite the advantages they hold of smaller and less densely collected population. I went on to further explain that I didnt like her as a representative of style over substance. These are facts, sorry if they hurt your feelings. I didnt say anything about people that like "Jacinda". You are reflecting.

By the way what would you prefer I call her?

Your comments poke fun at people on the forum, even if you don't directly quote. That's the issue mate, talk about the scenario, not poking fun at peoples opinions. Otherwise, you come off with a massive chip on your shoulder.

I dont believe I have ever poked fun at people on the forum, I seriously try to back up my opinions with facts. Feel free to point me to my offending posts.

I hope more aid can start to be sent that way in terms of food and supplies to support poorer communitie.

Nothing stopping the air traffic of food and supplies to them right now. Freight is still flying internationally.

The name-calling is because your posts come off high and mighty. You talk about "some people" asking to start up travel or those snarky comments about people liking "jacinda".

It's stuff like the above or "Doesnt the virus know how warm and sincere Jacinda is? Cant we cure the virus with hugs?"

Maybe I'm reading into it.. and sorry if I am. But it comes off as a dig at forum members expressing opinions in previous posts, not fact based chat. Although, you do have a lot of that.

I'm living in HK. It's not fun right now...

I am in Metro Manila And that is Even less fun...just extended ECQ until 30 April..there is also a ban on sale of liquor ..add this to no NRL ?

We have family in Makati and they said a week or so ago, they could not buy vegies etc.
Supermarkets are still open and there are options to buy food online and get Grab delivery. The biggest problem is the non work and non income people as they have taken and age to get $ support and food to them. Around 12M people. This will also be where all the virus will mostly be hiding and undiagnosed.

And people are talking about reopening travel.

That has zero to do with any forum member. In that series of posts I clearly said I am not a fan of Jacinda....sorry....Mrs Gayford, 100% based on my belief that is all style and no substance. Everything is based on how things look and feel. Contrived platitudes. I am merely making the point that real issues, such as this virus dont give a rats about platitudes and only real actions with substance matter. No matter how many platitudes, warm smiles or tilted heads she gives, reality will bite. Less smiles and cute videos, more tests.

It is seriously simply only criticism of Mrs Gayford and says nothing about any forum members. If you then think " Hang on, I like Mrs Gayford....he must be having a go at me!!!", there is nothing I can do to help you.

Maybe I'm reading into it.. and sorry if I am. But it comes off as a dig at forum members expressing opinions in previous posts, not fact based chat. Although, you do have a lot of that.

This is a forum, where people discuss issues and opinions and other than the Politics thread, it isnt and shouldnt be an echo chamber. By its nature, people are going to have and express different opinions. Over time I have had many strongly held debates with members here and with the exception of one member, every time IMO both parties have come out of it with at least the respect for the others held opinion. Thats what it should be in my opinion.

The back and forth I had about Mrs Gayford was TOTALLY fact based, I gave sources showing that NZ infection rate exceeds Australias on a per capita basis as well as they are lagging badly on testing. Facts.

I should add to my rant about NZ and Jacinda that they HAVE done a good job at restraining the virus and reducing infection rates, however, as the data shows not as good a job as Australia. This was merely correcting the perception that it was the other way around.

You are joking right ... do you actually believe people would not be travelling from main land China and lying all and sundry ... every one wanting to come here would go through Honkers just as they did before .. I trust no one ! Keep the boarders closed .. just as the Chinese students came in from multi countries paid for by our Criminal Universities .

Government won't risk it.

Probably right. It will be interesting how travel spins back up. If this all comes to the conclusion of a mass immunisation program, will we be waiting for everyone in the world to immunize first? That's a long, long time away.
