I’m no expert but why are we even considering the Australian Open when there just seems to be plane loads of tennis people jetting in with many testing positive. This seems like madness to me.

That’s the madness which is the Government of Victoria.. they are worried someone else will put the event on .. public health is irrelevant at this stage . Also pushing for overseas students by the thousands to be allowed in months ! But there own citizens are locked out of the state go figure .

That is the worst part, if they still won't let people who live in Victoria who are out of state come home then they should be ashamed letting an event this size, that requires so many people to travel from overseas, go ahead.

Lockdowns don't work, that's fairly clear by now, no lockdown has effected the virus at all. There's a fair argument that this virus is airborne, by the amount of "Mystery" cases that they can't link to any person, continually popping up and breaking out.

There are a number of cases where crew on ships have all contracted covid after having no contact with anyone on the land for weeks and all tested clean and no symptoms before going to sea.
There are also cases of small islands getting it without having any external contact.

It's thought that it's getting spread through the air, carried around by dust plumes, sea spray, trade winds etc.

So protect the 0.1% and let the rest of us live or lives because lockdowns aren't doing a thing, the virus will eventually run its course like every other one before it.

This advice flies in the face of the facts as we know them. Victoria beat the virus via lockdowns. Australia beat the virus via lockdowns. Most of the world is in a terrible state now because they didn't implement lockdowns.

I think your figure is wrong as well. I think you are talking about mortality rates. The problem isn't just deaths. The problem is when the virus gets out of control the hospital systems get inundated because so many people get really really sick and require care.

Have a read, you probably won't because the evidence flies in the face of what you already believe but I'll put it here anyway.

You need to go and see a mental health expert. It's that simple. You are stating stuff that is factually untrue.

Did you even read it?

@Hangonaminute you've posted more that 1.3K posts in your 411 days on here and this is the first time I have had the misfortune to stumble upon you. I hope it's the last.

How have you missed him?

He doesn't rate Bitcoin.

You need to go and see a mental health expert. It's that simple. You are stating stuff that is factually untrue.

If lockdowns work, why have we had more than 1?
The only reason why you'd be on your 3rd lockdown is because 1 and 2 didn't work right?

So it's "factually true" that the first 2 lockdowns didn't work, the 3rd lockdown is the evidence

The UK lockdowns worked really well didn't they

Firstly you do not have the ability to think logically and rationally. So you are setting up a premise that you want to be right and despite proof that it is incorrect you continue to go down that path. You need to work on your ability to think critically and rationally.

Each lockdown in Australia has ended up stopping the virus completely. Just let that sink in for a little. So your premise is incorrect. That ends your premise right there.

You are raising a secondary point which is actually completely different to your initial factually inaccurate point. Your second point should be restated as why does the virus disappear and then it is reintroduced into certain geographic areas. This is actually a very very simple one to explain. The virus is still within the world and it is reintroduced into the geographical area that you are talking about because of people traveling to these geographic areas.

If you just take a step back you will realize that this is a factual unemotional logical response to the inaccurate premise that you want to be true but isn't true.

I'll add some additional points. Human beings have had epidemics for a long long time. We had the Spanish Flu 100 odd years ago which in my opinion was worse than the current COVID crisis. We've had the black plague. We've had ebola break out in various communities. These epidemics and pandemics are solved via the same approach. You have to lockdown geographic areas and not have the virus reintroduced into those demographic areas via infected people.

Your problem though is simply an inability to think rationally. I'm starting to get used to this because for some reason the world has a certain percentage of the population who cannot think logically and rationally. You go and look for alternative facts to justify your irrational opinion.

Instead of looking for alternate facts to confirm your opinion go and look for facts that disprove your opinion.

Did you read the article I linked?

I won't speak for anyone else, but I did read the article you linked.

The 1st line of the article is this

>The use of universal lockdowns in the event of the appearance of a new pathogen has no precedent.

You are in trouble posting when the very 1st line of the article is factually incorrect. Both of the following articles discuss lockdowns used to combat the Spanish Flu. An article is not very reliable when the 1st sentence is incorrect, should anyone read anymore after that?

I'm not reading all of that and I bet you didn't as well. I did skim some of it and it's fascinating how Australia and New Zealand aren't mentioned. It's called cherry picking data.

Lockdowns have worked in Australia and other countries. I suggest you go back to the drawing board.

Like any rule, things work when people adhere to and follow them. Having said that, the plan has to efficacious and right for the problem. The UK lockdown didn't work, firstly, because they have a moron in control who thinks the dollar is more important than people's health. Another reason, which applies to anyone new policy is it is not possible ot understand every possibility until something is implemented and tested.

So you're agreeing with me, lockdowns don't work, "the UK lockdown didn't work"

Not really. What I'm saying is things, and lockdowns is one example, work if they are appropriate and the rules followed. Obviously the UK ones up until now haven't done there job properly either because of poor planning and/ or guidelines, or non-adherence to the rules by the people - think Melbourne and some of the idiots that were on TV saying they didn't care if someone got it.
Our lockdowns have worked much better and they will be more effective in the future as more and more loopholes/ issues with current systems are realised and fixed. Look at the results achieved here in comparison to the UK.

I'll state something else on this. Lockdowns work. The issue is the set-up of the premise is wrong. The people stating they don't work are expecting 1000's of cases per day to go to nothing. That isn't how it works. They slow down the virus growth rate. If though you have a population where the virus is rife it may take years of lockdowns to stop the virus completely. You obviously can't do that.

So contact tracing can't work to get the cases to zero past a certain limit and lockdowns can't work to get the cases to zero if the number of cases past a certain limit.

This isn't exactly rocket science or difficult to understand.

Yet another record daily death toll unfortunately, almost 17,000 covid deaths globally in the last 24 hours.

If it continues at this rate, there will be more covid deaths in the first few months of 2021 than the whole of 2020.

Europe continues to be the worst-faring continent, with almost half the world's deaths over the 24 hour period; the US the worst-faring single country; Brazil and South Africa also struggling particularly badly. The trend is not looking good in Indonesia either.

Europe continues to be the worst-faring continent, with almost half the world's deaths over the 24 hour period; the US the worst-faring single country; Brazil and South Africa also struggling particularly badly. The trend is not looking good in Indonesia either.

Those lockdowns are going great

In almost all cases lockdowns in those countries have been either weaker than Australia, or, lockdowns in states/regions that haven't had 'hard borders' in the way Australian states have (e.g the UK for a long time had regional lockdowns in the north, but there was nothing to stop you leaving your region, ditto for different states in the US). Most of those regions have also had much weaker international borders too. In Europe you can still travel between countries pretty much to your heart's content.

The Australian/Kiwi approach is a model that others should follow.
