I can understand it totally. If I had a business and a mortgage in Victoria and the whole state is totally locked down for the sake of a handful of community cases. I would be raging. WE didnt lock a whole state down here and it was brought under control quickly and safely. He doesnt trust his systems, maybe he is right.

It seems like QLD, Vic and WA only have one tool in their arsenal to combat outbreaks.

Yes, the sledgehammer gets a good workout.

I am critical of Vics approach, but as a NSW resident Australian, I am glad that is what is happening, because after what has happened before I am not confident that they can track and trace and control it like NSW and the last thing we need is another blowout to hundreds a day again.

It just must be so hard on the Victorian people though, I am glad I am in NSW.

I'm glad I am in Cairns
This virus is ruthless in its spread and i do feel for all those who have been in lockdown

Everyone suffers
Even though Cairns has largely escaped the spread of the virus, the tourism industry has copped one hell of a hit up here
For those who know these tourism companies skyrail will be operating weekends only
Tjabukai cultural centre has closed its doors permanently
Quicksilver has made redundant many staff but have asked them to re apply for jobs with a restructure required due to major losses last year
These are the 3 major tourism companies in Cairns, and most people visiting Cairns would go on at least one of these
Not to mention all the smaller operators who have not been able to hold on

On the other hand the building industry is booming up here at the moment and we are struggling for trades and materials
I am lucky enough to be in that industry but also feel for those struggling

Every weekend my wife and I support our local establishments close to where we live to try and help them keep their doors open
Most seem to be doing OK at the moment
But that can change quickly

Although most wouldn't agree, I believe lockdowns are important in keeping this virus under control
To simply let it take its course or relax these lockdown laws are not the answer just at the moment
But with the new vaccine arriving today, hopefully we can all start getting back to a little more normality

Lockdowns definitely are a tool in the toolbox, they are just not the only one. Lockdowns are great to slow things down and give you time to prepare other strategies The most powerful tools are social distancing, personal hygiene and contact tracing. If you have strong contact tracing practices it allows you the best chance of avoiding a lockdown and destroying businesses and the economy. That doesn't mean that you won't lose control and be forced into a lockdown, it just mean you have other options before you get to that point.

Cairns would be a nice place to wait out a pandemic though.

Yea , but look what happened last year . They went half at it , and it almost got out of control. It’s only a few days . Plus that state is very small . It’s only a few hrs and you’re out of there in any direction , including south to tassie . By protesting you take the risk of making it worse . Like the protests last year. It’s only for a few days . But I get what you’re saying .

I also said an another post, from a selfish POV Im glad they are doing it because I dont think their systems are up to it, especially their track and tracing and that is what caused the blow out last time, and yes we cant afford that again.

Its not state barracking to say this. I have a business associate in Vic and he was telling me stories of the situation down there at the time of the big blow out and people were waiting 7-10 days for test results, there was zero tracing etc. They are trying to catch up and are improving their systems.

Literally a couple of hours ago I bumped into old family friends I havent seen for years and they told me their daughter is in Vic, her background is in nursing but she works for the police Critical Action Team in Mental Health. She has been taken off all police duties and is working on contact tracing.

A quick update on my hungarian mate, if anyone is interested (if not scroll on).

He is still home but is VERY sick. Hardly has breath to talk, bed ridden. He is still worried about dying but equally scared of going back to the hospital which seems to have been a pretty harrowing experience for him. He saw a lot of people rolled out under a sheet.

He was sharing a ward with two other men. One had a flesh eating bacteria in his leg and needed his leg amputated, the other guy needed an operation for bowel cancer. They couldnt operate on either guy because they both have COVID and they have both had it for 3 months and they cant get rid of it. My mate Pisti was very lucky to have gotten rid of the virus in a little over a week and they wanted him out of the hospital as quick as they could. Scary stories.

A sad/poignant thing for me with Pisti's getting sick with Covid has been what has happened to Lilu the bear. Pisti raised Lilu from a weeks old baby after the mother bear was shot and killed. I got to meet Lilu 2 years ago and hand fed her. Pisti has been slowly slowly training her and he is literally with Lilu EVERY day, Lilu treats him like her mum. THe end goal with all of his bears is to get them out into a large property they have there where the bears and wolves live wild but Lilu takes a lot of extra care and training because she was so young and she is so imprinted by humans. Pisti told me he had to train her to survive and then years of training to teach her she is a bear.

When Pisti got taken to hospital, Lilu was on her own and a decision was made (not by Pisti) to release her into the wild area with the other bears. Pisti is heart broken about it. Apparently Lilu wouldnt leave the area near where she has been raised and wouldnt mix with the other bears, didnt eat and was attacked by a couple of the other female bears. Latest is that the largest angriest male that doesnt get on with any of the other bears has taken Lilu under his wing and Lilu is eating again. I hope she makes it, she cant go back.

NSW and VIC are always going to be worrisome when there are outbreaks, particularly the densely populated cities and satellite cities.

Admittedly, I think the NSW response to the Avalon outbreak was pretty good and it shows the tracing and testing model works pretty well when you have the appropriate systems in place.

Why do people we question talk about the overlords being ours, but never theirs?

"Your overlords"

They always seem to know something the rest of us don't but they always disappear when I ask why isn't Mr overlord theirs too
