I've just finished having a heart to heart with my eldest son about his hesitancy to receive a vaccination. His girlfriend is against vaccination and feeds him her views. I said to him he should respect his girlfriend's views and in return she should respect his. He will be vaccinated tomorrow and I will go with him just to give him moral support.

His cousin is a nurse manager (matron) at a hospital and she had a good chat to him last night about it.

Lovely.

Another big high quality study. There isn't much change for all of us personally however the figure previously was about 25 times protection if you were vaccinated against going to hospital. This study has a figure of closer to 30.

The difference in percentage is not comparable because the studies are in different time periods as clearly stated within the study you have quoted that the study is conducted during the period in which the Delta variant went from small percentage to the dominant strain. It actually says that in the study.

Not having a go at you, just explaining the data and the variance. Doesn’t impact your point that the vaccines drastically reduce the risk

Heard the explanation of this today. It is not “hide” the information it is simply a factor that as numbers rise, they are no longer able to provide accurate, useable information on this. This information is derived from a short interview with the person once they receive a positive result. They are not physically able to get this information within the 24hrs

I know you are being sarcastic but this is the same arrogance that NSW politicians suffered from.

Vaccinated people will get sick and die. Heaps more unvaccinated people will get sick and die. This is pretty close to a pandemic amongst the unvaccinated with a virus that is now highly contagious.

No one can stop this virus over the course of the next couple of years without high vaccination rates.

Unless the states implement a permanent hard border because NSW and Vic with not get back down to zero as we have got to live with it now.

My take is that even with a hard border it will get out.

A hard border from Qld to NSW and Vic is performance art. When push comes to shove and the Qld economy starts to suffer, the border will mysteriously “soften”

She's mid 20s herself and I am very proud of her. Actually the whole family is proud of her. My son is well aware he is on a winner as her colleague is exceptional.

Yes, we will have to learn with it but until vaccination rates are high we shouldn't relax restrictions. We shouldn't also be waving the stick like the NSW government and Scomo are doing - vaccination or suffer is their current policy. Not everyone can get vaccinated atm where I live because there simply aren't enough supplies. We don't have a single case because most people are doing the right thing. All they are doing with the stick is turning people off.

1. The disinformation on the AZ vaccine. It's been a monumental mistake. We have vaccines available we just don't have the Pfizer vaccine available. The AZ vaccine is a really good vaccine.
2. I don't think there is any choice but to wave the stick at people. We can't escape the fact that unvaccinated people cost society significantly more than vaccinated people. How do you get around this ? I'm not even a fan but I cannot rationally see any other option.
3. Vaccine hesitancy is really high until you get outbreaks but by then it's too late for some people. So your comments there could lead to increased deaths and sickness that doesn't have to happen.

I agree and disagree with some of your points.
1. AZ does in fact have issues - that's why there are six permissible reasons to ask for Pfizr. Other than those reasons, it is fine for people (and yes the misinformation has been detrimental).
2. Most people don't need the stick - they want to do the right thing. The misinformation, uncertainy, and mixed messages, did not help. Scomo and other politicans should leave the message to the medical experts rather than playing politics. There are anti-vaxxers but if they choose not to get vaccinated that's there choice. I do think unvaccinated people should be excluded from some things from a safety point of view not as a punishment.
3. My comments will not lead to increased deaths and sickness - my comment smerely point out I think it is the wrong tactic. Give yourself an uppercut from me 🙂

The AZ is a really good vaccine. I accept that is has some issues but as you state this is all part of the standard health advice.
I think the stick has to be given out. Some people are strongly pro this stance. I'm actually not and still thinking through it. I just can't get around the fact that the unvaccinated are going to cost society so much more. I was initially hopeful that this issue could be avoided but I don't think it will. In France my understanding is that they are having weekly freedom rallies because of this issue. I think our freedom fighters got caught up in this movement but I doubt they even understood the issue.
The point I'm trying to make with the comment about not getting vaccinated is that all of a sudden an outbreak occurs and then this virus rips through communities. If everyone just got vaccinated when vaccines were available we would have had a much lower impact on the health care system including deaths and illness.

If QLD's expecting us to get to zero that isn't going to happen.

I don't think they are but at the same time they're trying not to get to the point where NSW is now.

It's going to get to the point where NSW won't even be counting the cases. They will only count hospital admission.

That's to save themselves from their own bungling.

The report actually says that's the best way to go about it once we reach 70% vaccinated. Europe and America has actually starting going by it.

It might be my political bias but the rhetoric coming out of the Libs at the moment has me riled. The NSW Premier wouldn't lockdown when she needed to; and wouldn't put in place obvious checks on people leaving affected LGAs until it was too late. If it had been nipped in the bud at the beginning it wouldn't have probably spread so widely.
COVID has spread also because of people who won't do the right thing/ are conspiracy theorists/ anti-vaxxers/ Qanon or whatever. I can understand people protesting a political stance or environmental issues but to protest against something like a pandemic crosses the line for me and I have been in many a picket line over the years. People breaking the rules need a little time in the cooler to show how serious the problem is and what will happen to those lovely people who don't do the right thing.
I was in a mechanic's the other day (we don't have one case where I live). I was told a person came in with a flat and had a runny nose, sneezing etc. He was from Sydney and told the mechanic the situation there was blown out of proportion and COVID was rubbish. He then said he was a driver for people with disablities - far out. Unfortunatley, the mechanic didn't take his number to report him - I would have in a heartbeat.

My only difference with you is blaming the Liberals and I'm not political although people will state I am. I've said multiple times I've only ever voted Labour. I agree with your point in relation to locking down further and I even stated in a previous post she was arrogant. I just don't see any politician stopping this longer term so I don't see it as a huge deal in the longer term. I think my bias is also not to politicize the issue at all because I view all the conspiracy theorists as politicizing the issue. I've also seen what is happening in America and it kills me.

I also get riled up with vaccine hesitancy because it's coming no matter what you do.

I can't stand the conspiracy theorists. I think they should be classified as criminals.

We've had so many people come on this thread and state every conspiracy theory under the sun. I'm not on Facebook so I don't get to read this stuff. I have an anti-vaxxer mate who has been vaccinated and he said you should hear what a mutual acquaintance was stating on Facebook.

As vaccination numbers rise I'm hoping there's light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm hoping at the end of September they might allow gyms, pools etc to open to fully vaccinated people. I'd also love to be able to head to the mountains, or maybe hit the beach for a surf. Even theatres might open to limited numbers if patrons are vaccinated.

I think COVID safe practices will be with us for a long while but I'm OK with that if I can move around a bit. I'm not bothered at all with restricted numbers, QR codes or wearing a mask on pubic transport etc.

Moving forward restrictions will be more focused on hospitalisations than cases.

A lot of mixed and confusing messaging out there.

We are in lockdown because of the current number of cases and the strain on the hospital system.

Get vaccinated, it will keep you out of hospital and stop you dying.

If everyone is vaccinated then surely hospital numbers will go down. Wouldn't any rise in hospital numbers be either unvaccinated people, or a vaccine resistant strain which would mean the vaccine percentage whatever it is is irrelevant?

I honestly think that they have no idea, are basically verbalising untested theories, which is why they are backflipping every 2 weeks.

You cannot keep people locked down while refusing to be transparent about the reasons for it.
