Cricket Season Thread

0-169 at lunch. That is some session but the hallmark of this series has been dramatic collapses so more work to be done. Be nice if these boys can push on for centuries post lunch.

Hughes out, here's hoping the Uzi continues to build the platform.

What did most think of his innings?? Personally thought he was a bit lucky at times but at least rode his luck and backed himself

Yeah he looked good once he got into stride but he does this all the time - looks great before a break and then gets out soon after resumption. If he wants to play test cricket he can't just play one good session and not go on with it. I

And here comes the collapse…

Yoss this is the big difference in the two sides five years apart When opposition teams turn the screws and can limit our runs this side capitulates The side 5 years ago rode out the storm and then counterattacked
Ponting must surely know now the end is here 3rd ball duck LBW again

If Punter doesn't get runs in the second dig that may be curtains on his career, depending on how Khawaja goes. Good to see Hughes get some runs, even if he did ride his luck out there. Watson too, although for an opener he doesn't convert enough of his starts in my opinion, he's made it to 50 18 times in his test career and only gone on to make a century twice, not good enough for a test opener.

I'm not watching it all that intently, but from what I saw, I thought it was a pretty standard innings from him. He is edgy early in the innings but finds his groove. Lost momentum with the break and dropped his wicket. Good to see him score runs, hopefully it's a confidence booster.

And Punter… Well... I'm feeling bad for him at the moment. Another early dismissal via LBW, really hope he has a big second innings. I'm seriously concerned he may get pushed after this Test.

Khawaja looks to be trying to anchor the innings. Hopefully he remains patient and plays each ball on it's merit. He's very susceptible to prodding at the outswinger that travels down the offside corridor.

steyn is statistically the best bowler in history. they just showed a stat where he has the lowest strike rate for a wicket with a bowler who has taken more than 200\. think of some of the greats and he is well in front. only bowler below 40 with 39.5 next was Waqar/Wasim with 43.5 so clearly shows he is a top class bowler

Geez, what a horrible collapse. Hopefully Mitch can smack a few and get us up past 300, and give us something of an advantage heading into the second innings. If we can have them 1 or 2 down before they pass us we'll be in great shape, if we only have a 20-30 run lead heading into the second inning, and don't take early wickets we'll probably drop this one.

I'm going on record as saying by the end of his career, Steyn will be the highest wicket taking quick in the history of the game. McGrath holds the record with 563 and Steyn has already taken 250 in 47 matches, and he's only 28 yrs old. He plays for another 5 or 6 yrs and he'll go very close to breaking the record

I agree. Which is why he should bat 6 and not open

Anything over 200 will be tough in my opinion. Apart from Watson and Hughes in the first dig here and Clarke in the first dig in the last test, our batting has been dreadful. I have little faith in them chasing down anything over 200.

lol I like how on days like this when Australia need wickets, the commentators alwayz claim its gonna be Mitchell Johnson's day. Talk about over-rated
and whats with Haddin? never seen a wicket keeper get so excited over nothing. There was a stumping attempt on Amla earlier, where Amla didn't even lift his foot and Haddin came charging round the stumps. Then there was the run out where De Villiers was almost past the stumps, and Haddin charges 30 metres in excitment. Alson on Haddin, has anyone ever noticed his stutter?

The way Australia have been batting, i don't know anyone could be confident in them chasing anything over 200
