Cricket Season Thread

Just incase anyone was wondering, interesting turn of events at the SCG today, NSW all out 293, top scorer BJ Haddin 108*…

Draw was a great result for us.

Top order didnt fire and Watto was missing. Add to that Duminy will play no part in the series and we were rusty.

Psychologically we won that game.

A double and 2 centuries, we werent bowled out and we did it all must faster than they did. Our blokes will be sleeping better tonight than theres will be.

A lot of promising signs. Bowlers did well on a batsman's deck that offered nothing to them. Despite Warner, Punter and Quiney not firing with the willow, other stood up to be counted. Can only wonder what result the match would have offered if Day 2 weren't a washout.

Wouldn't bring Watto back unless he is 100%.

Great last two days by the side ,we gave the Saffas something to think about for Adelaide

Bowling attack still looks unbalanced , maybe Starc might replace Hilfy as Adelaide isn't known for being a ground where the bowlers get much swing

I didn't know that Watto was a famous cricketer as well CB

Are you a batsman or bowler Watto and can you supply us with your stats ??

I understand his backyard cricket averages are amazing even with his well noted issues with the six and out rule.

Hear he is handy with the flipper, the zooter and the wrong un as well Yoss, but that is probably more due to his Brisbane Rugby league associations and in particular his club associations

Got an opinion or just flicking BS from the peanut gallery?

I could care less tbh Just find it funny how everyone tries to play selector at the first sign of trouble without considering the fact that we just might not be good enough no matter whose there :astonished:

I get frustrated at the selectors lack of courage. At some point in the recent past it was ordained that someone needed to score hundreds of runs over many Shield seasons before they'd be considered hardened enough for Test cricket. The result of that policy is the procession of thirty something's making their debuts. That's all very well, but the policy backfires when things turn sour.

Once upon a time Australian selectors had the guts to pick players on potential and attitude, Waugh and Warne and Border being examples of that approach. Thank Christ Warne isn't 21 years old at the moment, he'd retire with about 200 Test wickets. The selectors don't back themselves, they play it safe, I assume because the rewards are so great these days

I think that policy of selecting older players to debut is what has resulted in a longer transitional period that what could of been. Just as an example, when Mark Waugh retired, Lehmann who was already 30+ took his spot, when Lehmann retired, it was Katich who took his spot. If a young 20 something came in when Waugh retired, then that player would be in the peak of his career with 10 years experience right now.

Other examples include Symonds replacing Martyn, Jacques replacing Langer, Hussey replacing Clarke early in his career and Haddin replacing Gilchrist. Imagine if we also stuck with Hodge and picked David Hussey as well?

I would say in defence of the selectors, the Shield sides didn't help because they would select 27 or 28 yr old debutants, Victoria were the worst culprits with guys like Harwood, Wright, Denton, Lewis, McGain and D Pattinson all being in their mid 30s and yet getting a good run. It's lucky they retired otherwise James Pattinson would still be in club cricket.

Back in those days though, shield cricket was close to the standard of test cricket. If Mike Hussey was overlooked he'd have been dubbed the best player to never play test cricket (from any country). I didn't mind the picking those guys though, they had to work for close to decade in shield cricket just to get a crack, it wasn't going to be something they'd throw away easily. You could see who had class and who was merely in a purple patch. The very talented kids got their shot early.

Heard something on the radio the other day and had never noticed it before

Amla doesn't wear the same shirt as the rest of his teammates due to strict abhorence of alcohol due to his religious beliefs

And every game he plays where he is supposed to wear the shirt and he doesn't he is fined

Bloody harsh in my opinion

My only issue with the South Africans (and the Sri Lankans also) is they seemed to play a lot of series vs the Zimbabweans and the Bangladeshis during the middle 90's to the early 2000's

Some people's records are far inflated than maybe they should be

Kallis has played 155 tests. 6 of them against Zim, 6 against Bangladesh.
7.7% of his Tests against the minnows for 7.8% of his total Test runs. Hardly inflating.

I thought he successfully contested it due to his Islamic faith?

Kerry O'Keefe,Kepler Wessels and Henry Lawson were talking about it

No one stepped up and mentioned what you did CB

But I agree with what you are saying mate

Talking of funny cricket stories , Kepler was talking about an innings where he got 46 vs WSC West indians side in the second season of World Series Cricket

Being 22 at the time he was pretty proud of himself facing up to Roberts ,Garner,Daniels and Holding and doing well

That was until Kerry Packer got a hold of him

Kerry said "I don't pay imports to make 46 Wessels " 😱pen_mouth:

I fail to see why they would make changes?

Had the second day not rained out, the Aussies could have well been staring at a win…

Disgraceful descision by selectors not to change side

Won't be watching and hope they lose

Stupid statement mate. That side was better than the proteas in the first test. Never back against your country….especialy the Australian Cricket team.

Apart from possibly Shane Watson what changes would you have made? Hope they lose? That's a bit harsh!!

Starc for Hilfy Yoss

And every time I say drop Hilfy he gets a bag

Here's hopin 😛ray:

Who won the one day game between Qld and NSW yesterday ??

What was your favourite piece of willow you ever used ??

Back in 1985 , my father bought me a Steeden of all things (cricket bat ) It was 2lb 9 ou and it destroyed cricket balls had it for 9 years and it scored me a couple of thousand runs I reckon

Absolute exquisite timing this bat had , once hit a six that landed in the mangroves on the fly at the Palm Drive fields in Gladstone

Decided to pace it out at the end of the day and it was over 105 metres (bit hard when you are trying to pace it out over a main road )

The other post was made before they even picked the 12th man…

Who won? Not sure - I heard Forrest made runs so it must have been NSW
