I feel the pathway to Test Cricket is a major part of the problem. We seem to have this excellence program that has superseded Sheffield Shield and here lies our biggest problem. Science is a wonderful thing in sport, but it will never substitute time in the middle & hours of work running in to bowl on a hot summer day.
We need to go back to grass roots cricket and put all our energy into it… Its hilarious reading about all the current news stories talking about our batting woes and who is performing this week in S/Shield, but we dont seem to send any of our world class bowlers back there to bowl at them?
Years ago, we knew who would handle the toughness of Test Cricket, as they were facing Jason Gillespie & Stuart MacGill for at least half the Shield Season.
I say scrap the centre of excellence and this resting bowlers rubbish and let them tear it up week to week at Shield level again. They only break down because we wrap them in cotton wool all too often!
