Daine Laurie #237

WT'S need a forward who can hit it up and have Laurue in his back pocket to off load to him then we'll see how good he can be something like the way the Storm use Papenhuyzen.

For anyone interested he featured on Over the Black Dot episode 3 - toward the end of the episode - which can be viewed on SBS on demand. Though he's such a shy kid he sounds ecstatic about his opportunity with us.

Cannot believe it is even a discussion about moving Laurie to 6..
Adam D is doing great at 6 and Laurie is killing it at 1 with not much ball and against some top teams that defend well..
Even the commentators are raving about him so lets give him a year or 2 to build combos and maybe add a few Kilos.. I truly believe he will turn out to be a superstar and we are lucky to pick him up.

Spine is fine, edge defense is like paper mache

Agree ... Imagine having a Arrow or Wade Graham in our team.... We need to spend some money and get a few top line players

You’ve hit the nail on the head there, those guys are quality NRL forwards, our second rowers occasionally do something nice in between missing tackles.

His best day in tigers colours by far, great to see his work out the back to go with his usual elusive running. Few linebreaks to top it all off building a great combo with Douehi

Why $140,000 Tiger Daine Laurie has no regrets about quitting Penrith
By Christian Nicolussi
May 13, 2021 — 3.45pm

He is the bargain-buy No. 1 relishing the chance to play regular first grade under Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire with not a single regret about walking out on table-toppers Penrith.

Tigers fans have shed plenty of tears across the opening nine rounds of the season - and new recruit Daine Laurie himself has been entitled to regularly cry about quitting the Panthers for the Tigers over the summer

Laurie was on a $60,000 development contract at Penrith and upgraded to a full-time contract worth a minimum $80,000. But Dylan Edwards was the starting fullback at Penrith, with Charlie Staines and Stephen Crichton considered the back-up options, making Laurie’s path to first grade more than difficult.

The Tigers were prepared to hand him the starting fullback role for around $140,000 before pushing that figure towards $300,000 for 2022 and 2023. Based on the first dozen games of 2021 it is already shaping as a steal.

Laurie always knew Penrith would start the year like they have – the club will chase a 10th straight win on Sunday against the Gold Coast – and how it would always take time with the Tigers.

A South Sydney fan growing up, Laurie could not wait to play under Maguire, and to develop his game under the premiership-winning coach.

Daine Laurie hasn’t looked back despite trading the red-hot Panthers for the Wests Tigers
A loss to Newcastle in the Magic Round curtain-raiser will no doubt prompt a fresh round of conversations about Maguire’s future, but the 21-year-old Laurie will not hear of it.

Such is the mutual respect between the pair, Laurie was allowed return home to the NSW north coast last week and even skip the captain’s run to farewell his grandmother, a goodwill gesture not normally afforded to players with so little experience and at a club desperate to win.

“I wanted the opportunity to play regular first grade, so to come here and play under ‘Madge’ [Maguire], it’s been awesome - there are no regrets at all,” Laurie told the Herald.

“I used to go for the Rabbitohs when I was younger and when he won the grand final with them, to be coached by him now, he’s so passionate about winning.

“I can’t thank Penrith enough for the last five years I was there, and it was difficult parting ways. I’m not surprised what they’re doing. They were always going to be a red-hot team this year. It was the same as last year. They work for each other and work as a team.

“But I had a goal to play week in, week out. I’m here for the next three years. We know what we need to do.

“I want to take a bit of pressure off ‘Brooksy’ [Luke Brooks] in attack, and be louder at the back with directing the boys in the defensive line.”

Laurie pointed to the heavens when he scored last week against the Gold Coast, only for the try to be disallowed. The gesture was for his grandmother, Rose Briggs, or ‘Nan Woaha’, who had been struggling with her health.

The chance to surround himself with friends and family at Coffs Harbour and his home town of Iluka came at the perfect time, but not one person asked him about what he was thinking walking out on the premiership fancies for the wooden spoon contenders.

Laurie was keen to go head to head with Newcastle fullback Kalyn Ponga, the $1m-a-season No.1 whose sidestep he has tried to replicate over the years, only for the Knight to be a late scratching because of an adductor injury
