Its not the end of the world for the man and nor it should be. He and his partner should be supported 100% by the club and its supporters and the man should hold his head up high. **IF**the allegation is proven then he should be given the chance to reform and get back on track.

99% of the time it is mandatory police make an arrest at a domestic incident. Domestic incidents are very unfortunate but in the true light of day they are very very common in low socio economic households because of all sorts of pressures placed upon families.

The man is a human being and I hope he gets treated that way.

Sounds like your making an excuss there Bug…....Violence against women is just plain wrong....no matter where you come from or what pressures you are under......I'm with tigh......

Wests Tigers stood by Laurie in the past......why would they treat him any different now............

Domestic violence occurs in at least 1/3 of Australian households - and are not restricted to low SES areas. :unamused: I can't believe people still use that old wives' tale - that bad things only happen in poor households. It's rot. Violence is wrong - end of. Against women, men, children, the disabled, the elderly, the Aussie-born and those who come here. Domestic violence is a stain on the human race. I hope he is innocent, because the thought of someone of his size and strength being violent towards a woman in a household with children, just scares the living daylights out of me.

I agree with you Suzie Q. I worded my comment wrong. What I meant is that with pressures of life and low income etc, it can be more prevalant in those house holds. I know it happens in all types of house holds. In no way do I condone any type of violence what so ever, but as human beings we are all a product of society and our upbringings. Domestic Assault can be as little as a push away. For instance the complainant might say to attending police "he has pushed me". That is an assault. What is clear here is that there is no Actual bodily harm as he would have been charged with that. So I hope that is a saving grace.

If he is guilty of Common assault, he cant be dropped like a hotcake. The allegation that faced Anthony Laffranchi and that currently faces Brett Stewart is 100 times worse.

If guilty, Hopefully the club can place Daine in a program which can help him with managing issues at home including stress related things that cause domestic violence.

the DT today it was Daine who called the police and he stated that he did not hit her but instead came into contact with her while trying to calm her down. also she was not injured and she did not file a police report nor and charges against him.
he was probably trying to do the right thing by calling the police and ended up copping it.

another thing is that who is it that calls the bloody DT to tell them about little incidents like this??? it was not anything major yet its all over the news like he murdered his partner. in saying that though, domestic violence should never be tolerated so if he did actually hit her instead of accidentally come into contact with her while trying to calm her down he needs to face the consequences.

Sounds like he's going to use the "Greg Inglis" defence.

The Wt club has already released him before this happen, so it's now Daine's problem and the 3 clubs(Newcastle, Stoem and the Warriors ) will have to make up their minds if they are still interested in him.

It's a pity, because if he played to his potential and trained CONSISTENTLY hard….he could have be the wreaking ball that our West Tigers team needs.

There has been nothing official to say we have/had released Daine Laurie… Where are you getting your info from..?

Clubs were circling for great Daine
By James Phelps From: The Daily Telegraph
HE WAS being chased by three NRL clubs but Daine Laurie's league career is in tatters after the dreadlocked giant allegedly hit his girlfriend in the face during an alcohol-fuelled argument.
>
Wests Tigers are expected to sack Laurie next week after police arrested and charged the rising star with assaulting the mother of his two children in the early hours ofyesterday morning at his home in Leumeah.
>
**Laurie was negotiating with the Knights, the Storm and the Warriors for season 2010, with the Tigers agreeing to release him from the final year of his contract - but the 110kg prop may end up on the rugby league scrapheap with all three clubs ending their interest in the Yamba junior yesterday.**
>
Speaking last night, Laurie's manager Chris Haddad claimed his client called police to his home about midnight on Tuesday after he accidentally struck his partner in the face during an argument.
>
"It was all by accident,'' Haddad said. "It was a reflex action because she was going cranky. He put his hands up at her in self-defence.''
>
It is understood Laurie's partner of five years refused to give police a statement and suffered no major injury.
>
But the Tigers wasted no time standing down the league big man after being alerted to the incident by police.
>
"The board has made the decision to stand Daine Laurie down for an indefinite period,'' Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said.
>
"There is a need to allow the proper legal processes to run their course.
>
"But we also believe standing Daine down is the appropriate course of action considering the best interest of all parties concerned.
>
**"The club is working with authorities on the matter and is committed to providing support and counselling to all parties.**
>
"The club enforces a strict code of conduct for all of its employees and is totally opposed to any action that places the health, safety and wellbeing of any individual in jeopardy.''
>
Laurie has been on the outer with the Tigers all year, with his "carefree'' attitude and commitment to training a major concern for coach Tim Sheens and his coaching staff.
>
A player of enormous potential, Laurie has spent much of the year playing for Wests in the NSW Cup and was due to play in the club's semi-final at Leichhardt Oval this weekend.
>
"This doesn't come as a shock,'' said a Tigers insider.
>
"He has been a bit loose this year.
>
"He had loads of potential but unfortunately was a bit on the wayward side this year.''
>
Laurie burst on to the scene last year as a 24-year-old and quickly became a cult figure with Tigers fans.

His destructive charges cut a swath through rival teams but he was unable to nail down an NRL spot this year.

Sounds as though he was going anyway…...great to see the club working with authorities and offering support and counselling to ALL parties.....

**Tigers' dread: Laurie on assault charge**
Jacquelin Magnay and Glenn Jackson | September 17, 2009
>
WESTS TIGERS' dreadlocked forward Daine Laurie recently attended Goulburn jail as part of his club's community goodwill gesture to promote rugby league; yesterday he was questioned and charged by police in relation to a domestic violence incident.
>
Laurie, 25, is alleged to have assaulted his partner at their Leumeah home shortly after midnight on Wednesday. It is understood the woman had ended their relationship several weeks ago and had been in negotiations with the footballer when the alleged attack - which split her lip and bruised her face - occurred.
>
Laurie had appeared to have turned the corner on a string of misbehaviour offences and a previous assault case - which landed him a 10-month stint in prison - within the close-knit structure of the Wests Tigers club. He had found accommodation in a Granville hostel and travelled regularly to Yamba to visit his young family. This year his partner and a host of Laurie's relatives moved into the Leumeah house that was procured by the club.
>
However, earlier this year the club demoted him to the lower grades because he inexplicably missed several training sessions. It is believed at the time he was having domestic issues.
>
In this latest instance, it is believed Laurie will argue he was protecting himself when the alleged assault occurred. The Herald understands it was Laurie who telephoned police, while according to his manager, Chris Haddad, Laurie's partner did not make a statement to police.
>
**''It's very petty,'' Haddad claimed. ''Nothing really happened. Daine knows he didn't do anything wrong. They had an argument over some silly things. Everyone has problems. He always does his best to fix things. All couples argue, but Daine's a very good fella.**
''This is just one of those setbacks. He's done nothing. I spoke to them both [on Tuesday night] and they both seemed all right.''
>
The Tigers have stood down Laurie from club duties indefinitely but chief executive Stephen Humphreys said that would be reassessed after he appeared in court next Tuesday.
>
He said both Laurie and his partner had been offered counselling by the club.
>
''We've been in contact with Daine and his partner and they both appear to be doing well,'' Humphreys said.
>
''We've offered assistance in whatever shape or form we can.''
>
The club earlier released a statement in which Humphreys said: ''There is a need to allow the proper legal processes to run their course but we also believe standing Daine down is the appropriate course of action considering the best interest of all parties concerned.
>
"The club is working with authorities on the matter and is committed to providing support and counselling to all parties.
>
"The club enforces a strict code of conduct for all of its employees and is totally opposed to any action that places the health, safety and wellbeing of any individual in jeopardy."
>
Tigers coach Tim Sheens said he was disappointed but added little more.
>
''The club is obviously making a statement … I'd leave it all in the hands of Steve Humphreys and the club to take whatever measures have got to be taken,'' Sheens said.
>
''Until I find out more than that, I'd prefer not to be discussing it at the moment.''
>
In the past 12 months there have been seven instances of NRL players being charged with assaults against women.
>
Currently at least three rugby league stars are before the courts. Manly fullback Brett Stewart will face court on September 28 in relation to a sexual assault charge. Melbourne centre Greg Inglis is back in court to defend an assault charge on October 14.
>
Former Cronulla player Greg Bird's appeal against his assault conviction for glassing his girlfriend is set for November 23\. Another assault case involving Bird is set for mid October.
>
NRL chief executive David Gallop said he was satisfied with the action the Wests Tigers had taken and said the club was continuing to keep the NRL informed.
>
Laurie has been bailed to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on September 22.

Thanks Geo, that's where I read it from…...the Great Daine, hasn't been a happy chappie with our club for a while now.....maybe it's all for the best :unamused:

Yeah he was on the outter that's for sure…...from what I'm hearing it's his own doing aside from this latest incedent....Anyhow opens up a spot for another young hopeful to get a shot....I'm sure the likes of the Fafita Bros, Stolk, Betham, Asa or Gower would be champing at the bit for the chance to play first grade......

Give Gower his place in the top 25...he deserves it....

Further more, whether he is guilty or innocent, the Club does not need this sort of press as I assume we are still looking for a major sponsor. Any negative press can have a big impact on prospective sponsors given the year we have had with the 'off field' incidents within the NRL.

Regardless of the end result, I think its a fairly safe bet to say Laurie is gone.

That said, with the amount of incidents like this, this year, you have to wonder if the 'offenders' were provoked.

Yep,it's all very sad and let's hope that it works out well for all parties. As a lot of the story is coming from that "Daily Telegraph" rag who knows what the truth is. All they want to do is sell newspapers, and as RL is the subject people want to read about they'll make things as lurid as they can to attract a reading audience. I don't think that they have a partricular interest in RL as such, and I sometimes think that they'd write up nude dwarf jelly-wrestling if they thought that it'd help sell newspapers.

Another aspect, if it all was an accident, and he is cleared through the courts etc (some how keeps his contract at the tigers)

Maybe he will wake up and smell the cheese afterwards and become our "Cooper Cronk".

LOL

I'll probably get shouted down for saying this but I can't figure out why Sheens didn't keep playing Laurie during the second half of the season. I know there was the situation where he missed a training session but we were carrying some players who were underperforming just as much as he was. Seemed unfair to single him out, especially when you consider the game he had against Parra.

I believe that if he had been kept in first grade and allowed to build some confidence it might have helped the team and Daine. It seems he was alienated to the point where the team were going to release him and he was already negotiating with other clubs. When this guy burst on the scene last year we were all treating him like the second coming. What harm would it have done to keep him in first grade?

What harm could it do? Um it would let everyone else know they can break the rules and nothing will happen…

From what I read his demotion had as much to do with the missed training sessions and his general attitude as it did his form but happy to be corrected on this.

if he goes to the storm he will be playing some form of rep footy in 2 years, he has the talent and all the attributes you look for in a player with the right coaching he will be a dominant player

Can't coach attitude…..

If he does play rep football....good luck to him....
