COWBOYS UP THE ANTE FOR ORIGIN STAR

North Queensland is desperate to lure NSW’s State of Origin forward Dale Finucane to Townsville next season.

Finucane has a number of offers to mull over as he decides where his rugby league future lies.

Melbourne is keen to keep him but the Storm realise that may not be possible due to salary cap constraints.

The Tigers, Bulldogs, and Cowboys are other clubs said to be keen on him.

Brent Read told Triple M the Cowboys are ramping up their efforts to sign him.

“It’s been well documented they put a two-year deal on the table for Dale Finucane. I’ve spoken to them this week, they’ve reached out to Finucane’s camp and let him know they are willing to go to three years now,” Read said.

“He’s got a few clubs after him. Melbourne has put an offer in, he’s been linked to the Wests Tigers, he’s been linked with Canterbury a few other clubs.

“The Cowboys are now willing to go to three years as a means to entice him across the line and get him to Townsville.

I am not for sacking Madge either, at least not while I don’t see a better (realistic) option.
Canberra embraced their inability to recruit big names and continued with their junior pathways topped up by English imports in recent years. We are now re-embracing development of junior pathways.
They struck gold with two English backrowers and hooker (at least for a period). Our last two signings are from the Super League.
Over the past decade (and much of Wicky’s tenure) they have been very similar to us, they clock off for long periods, get lesser performances out of their more experienced and more expensive players and struggle defensively and often have scores put on them while themselves being able to score points and often lose to sides they should beat.

Edit: to get myself back on topic I would rather spend a big chunk of change of the hectic cheese rather than Finucane. Also, both seem just as unrealistic to sign with us to me.

It was posted here from Willow last night from a good source and backs up The Poms version that Finucane isnt serious about coming here and we arent his first or even second choice.

Apparently Finucane told Michelle Bishop today that there are 8 clubs.

Im so glad to hear that about 8 clubs chasing him..but I dont believe it for a moment..
...all part of the BS from the media as to why our ole buddy Dale wld be a great fit for WTs at just $950k for 3 years blah blah...
He HAS BEEN a great workhorse,no more no less,but honestly isnt close to being a game changer at his peak & at this stage of his career wldnt make the top 6 most valuable forwards at the Storm(Smith,Grant,Welch,Asofa,Jessie Bromwich,Kaufusi)..which is why hes out for a final payday
.... am sure hoping it wont be us!

I dont know. I dont think 1 player can fix this. I think he could help and YES if signed Frontload him to the Max! Happy to suffer in 2022 if 2023 means we make the 8.

I think though Defense needs a whole team defense. If you want to pin a crazy idea, pin this:
Coach swap, Michael McGuire for Ricki Stuart. Ricki is one of the best defensive coaches in the league. Michael floggs us hard but cant work out our defensive issues.

We need a defensive coach and we dont have many options:
Bellamy, not happening.
Bennett, probably no chance in hell.

Below that is Ricki Stuart or Flanagan. (Or worse.)

Swapping Maguire for Wicky won’t help us.
Wicky has issues with a number of his players and Canberra (with the exception of the 2019 and 2020 seasons) are basically WT in green jerseys.


I am 140% against sacking Madge, but I think Ricky would be outstanding for us. IMO he is a great coach. What he has achived with Canberra has been unbelievable. Yo uthink its hard to attract players to Concord, try attracting players down there.

COWBOYS UP THE ANTE FOR ORIGIN STAR

North Queensland is desperate to lure NSW’s State of Origin forward Dale Finucane to Townsville next season.

Finucane has a number of offers to mull over as he decides where his rugby league future lies.

Melbourne is keen to keep him but the Storm realise that may not be possible due to salary cap constraints.

The Tigers, Bulldogs, and Cowboys are other clubs said to be keen on him.

Brent Read told Triple M the Cowboys are ramping up their efforts to sign him.

“It’s been well documented they put a two-year deal on the table for Dale Finucane. I’ve spoken to them this week, they’ve reached out to Finucane’s camp and let him know they are willing to go to three years now,” Read said.

“He’s got a few clubs after him. Melbourne has put an offer in, he’s been linked to the Wests Tigers, he’s been linked with Canterbury a few other clubs.

“The Cowboys are now willing to go to three years as a means to entice him across the line and get him to Townsville.

“Initially Dale’s management wanted a four-year deal, on huge money, that was never going to happen. Some clubs were talking about two years.”

IF we wanted him and offered the same as Cowboy for 3 years I think he would prefer Sydney over NQ.
I just don't think we are serious about him and if we don't pull our fingers out on TPJ we will get no one..
If there was a time this club needed some big signing news this is it as media are having having a field day on us daily ATM.

I posted this in the other thread as a bit of a smartarse remark but actually wouldn’t mind the following.

We should be smart and offer 550 for 3 plus a finals bonus of 100 each year and club option final year in the clubs favour if we play a grand final during his time at the club.

I don't think he would leave storm for 550k with us. we would need to be min 650k for 3 years I think.
But i like the idea of incentive for the top dollars

Ricky has huge issues. Heck I am sure Bellamy has issues, just his anger management and attention to detail work in his favor as a coach. Our work rate seems to have gone up, our defense still broken.

I get it, Ricky would clash with Brooks as he clashes with every NR7 that does not play his way. He would do weird ideas, but one thing he gets right is Defense. If not Ricky, Shane Flanagan OR we find a great defensive coach.

In short we need to fix defense. I don't think one player will solve that in our side. It doesn't seem a particular gap but an across the board problem.

We have Sheens around, Farah, but we need to get a defensive head in and make defense a focus. We have beaten Melbourne and other teams before on defense when we focus on this. With the new rules I don't think defense will come down to effort alone, but working to break down the play.

It's a coaching problem, Dale may help but Dale cannot fix that.

With Finucane, I'd be happy to offer a 2 year deal with 3rd in his favour, however we can choose for him to have an off field role in 3rd year. He'd be an asset to have in the organisation. That way he knows he is financially secured, we have someone elite for 2 years and that extra year, we have the option of it not affecting our salary cap.
