David Nofoaluma #164

From Pooper on Fox NRL

The Wests Tigers have landed a major signing coup with Dally M winger of the year David Nofoaluma inking a four-year extension to keep him at the club until the end of 2025.
The deal was sealed with a game of golf and dinner with Wests Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis and is worth upwards of $2 million.

*Finally we have a Chairman that can play golf, hopefully not very well.*

I think that’s smart, Roberts is definitely better on the right.

Stoked to have Noffa commit. He is our barometer energy-wise and probably our best hit-up merchant. Love watching him pick his way through a defensive line.
If we get 3 great years out of him we've done well. Positive signing.

Not unusual for us to not publicise a club option from the official announcement. It's like announcing the re-signing but saying you don't have confidence they'll still be as good at the end of the contract.
We didn't announce BJs club option at the time. We didn't even ever announce Momo's contract.
It's about saving face. I'd be gobsmacked if we caved into Nofs demands, especially right after a club interested in him went with someone else. A club option makes sense. A 4 year deal would he massive overkill and totally unwarranted. When was the last time any 4 year contract worked out well for us?? Very very few players in the league warrant four year deals or longer. Nofs not one of them.
But 3 years plus one, at 450k or under is acceptable

Regarding your particular sentence;

"When was the last time any 4 year contract worked out well for us??"

Would Fifita or Tapau or Addo-Carr have been worth it?

How bout Teddy, Koroibete, Pap or Woodsy?

Sure we ended up alleviating cap-space, only to make knee-jerk signings of hacks.

Sometimes you have to go above and beyond to get or retain a good thing. Not saying its easy, but thats someone else's job, not mine.... Thats why they get paid the big bucks. To identify who's worth it or not.
I'm all in on this one though.

Concerned? We have nothing to do with it.

But I would think the club would work as a team on these things, it’s certainly not a one out decision.

I wasn’t worried if he stayed or went, he stayed, I think it’s pointless looking back and now we move on to the next player we are looking at, remembering we still have 3 spots to fill.

If he ends up outside JTJ, we'll see just how fast he is. To maintain his big try scoring need numbers,. I think it's best he's outside BJ. Even with average form I think BJ really aids Noff. Good to see Noff retained. I hope his good attacking form holds firm and outweighs his obvious defensive deficiencies.

Where does it say anywhere officially that he's on or around $1m per season?

It's a running joke...

'I got a bit emotional': Nofoaluma can't hide joy at new Tigers deal

By Christian Nicolussi
January 14, 2021 — 11.45am

As a joke, Wests Tigers fan favourite David Nofoaluma planned to tell his teammates first thing on Thursday he was about to quit the club.

"But when I started thinking about leaving, I became emotional,'' Nofoaluma said. "Even the boys started thinking I was about to leave because I became a bit emotional and struggled to get the words out.

"So I brushed the whole joke and said, 'I'm staying another four years'. Then all the boys started cheering. It was a nice moment.''

If Tigers players were pumped about the winger's signing news, long-suffering fans will be even more delighted their winger and best player in 2020 is now staying put until the end of 2025.

There was talk of some late interest from South Sydney, but Nofoaluma, a Campbelltown junior, said he would have struggled to pull on any other jersey.

Supporters will never forget that Nofoaluma was one of the first to commit to the club in 2017 when high-profile teammates James Tedesco, Aaron Woods and Mitchell Moses exited the club.

Nofoaluma had met with Eels coach Brad Arthur and was close to leaving back then, only for his love of the joint venture club to convince him to stay.

This time around, Nofoaluma channelled The Castle's Dennis Denuto and told the Herald it was the ''vibe'' that had him most excited about hanging around.

Teaming up with new recruit James Roberts on the right edge was also good reason to be optimistic about the club's latest campaign.

Nofoaluma has played eight seasons of first grade and never featured in a final. The easy option would have been to link with a more-fancied club to end the September hoodoo.

"I could have gone to another club and played finals footy, but it will be so much more rewarding to finally get there with the club I started with,'' Nofoaluma said. "I've been through all the tough times here. There's so much to play for.

"I can't explain it. I've been involved with the club eight years, but things feel so much more professional now compared to what I've dealt with in the past. It's the feel. It's the vibe.''

Nofoaluma is one of the best kick returners in the game and has set himself the personal goals of pulling on the NSW jersey and representing Samoa at the World Cup.

The right-edge combination with Roberts was one that had instantly clicked in recent weeks on the training paddock.

"Jimmy the Jet has been killing it, we've spent time training on the same side, and he's something else,'' Nofoaluma said.

"The one thing I love about Jimmy is seeing him happy. What he has been able to accomplish off the field in terms of his rehab, it's played a massive role in him being happy and giving him every chance to have a successful year.''

The Tigers lost Harry Grant, missed out on Josh Addo-Carr and chased hard for Josh Mansour, so Nofoaluma's prized signature is a huge morale boost.

Provided he stays fit, Nofoaluma can become just the fifth player to chalk up 200 NRL games at the club behind Robbie Farah, Benji Marshall, Chris Lawrence and Chris Heighington. He needs just 11 tries to overtake Marshall and Lawrence as the club's top tryscorer.

Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis said: "As a proud local junior, David embodies all of the core values we hold dearly at Wests Tigers — that is, team, excellence and respect — and constantly strives to make both himself and the team better in every way.

"I have no doubt that David’s loyalty to Wests Tigers is an inspiration to all local juniors at Wests Tigers and that he will play a leading role in delivering the on-field success that the Members and fans of this club deserve."

Brett Morris killing it at 34yrs old. Nofa is in the same league. Not concerned about him running around at 31 yrs old. Club legend, good work Nofzilla.

Morris is in a different hemisphere to Nof and has been for the duration of their careers. Don't kid yourself

I watched Morris play park football in the Illawarra one day when he’d been dropped from NRL, point is all players have ups and downs in a career, Nof is at or near his prime and Morris is nearing the end.

Great news. Always liked Nof and often times he is blamed for defensive lapses that started inside him. I do agree that at times his read of the attack is poor and he is left stranded but i have also watched him on many occasions stop tries or take an intercept and score.

He is one of the better wingers playing today and if we signed him at the right price then i am glad he is on our side.

Morris' highs are far higher than Nofoaluma will ever achieve. Even in the twilight of his career, Morris remains a superior player to Nofoaluma. Nofoaluma is a club level winger with significant defensive deficiencies.
