Wests Tigers are extremely pleased to announce that local junior David Nofoaluma has signed a new playing contract with the club.

The new, four-year deal will see the 27-year-old remain in Wests Tigers colours until at least the end of the 2025 NRL season.

A Campbelltown junior, Nofoaluma made his first-grade debut for Wests Tigers in 2013 having starred in the club’s Holden Cup Premiership victory the year prior. He has since gone on to play a total of 139 NRL games — all in Wests Tigers colours — and currently sits third on the club’s all-time top try-scoring list with 74 tries.

Having played for NSW U/18’s and Australian Schoolboys as a junior, the dynamic winger made his senior representative debut for the Prime Minister’s XIII in 2015 before going on to make his international debut for Samoa the following season.

Named the Dally M Winger of the Year in 2020 after an outstanding individual season that saw him post career highs in tries, try assists, linebreaks and tackle breaks, Nofoaluma capped off his year by becoming the first winger in history to win the club’s Kelly-Barnes Award (Player of the Year) as well as the NRL Players’ Player Award.

He can become just the 13th player in club history to reach 150 games for the club in 2021.

The local junior said he was delighted to extend his playing future with Wests Tigers.

“This really is the only club for me, and I’m really pleased to be staying on at Wests Tigers,” Nofoaluma said. “I’ve only ever wanted to play for Wests Tigers, and I can’t thank the club, the Members and the fans enough for their support for me over the years.

Pulling on the Wests Tigers jersey has always been a huge honour for me and I’m really excited that it’s something I get to do for many years to come.

David Nofoaluma
“I’m determined to ensure our Members and fans are rewarded with the success they deserve, and I can’t wait to help play my part in making that happen.”

Wests Tigers Chair Lee Hagipantelis congratulated Nofoaluma on his new deal.

“On behalf of the Board of Wests Tigers and all at the club, I’d like to congratulate David on signing a new playing contract with the club,” Hagipantelis said.

“David has shown over a number of years that his heart lies with Wests Tigers and his commitment to the club in the face of external interest is a wonderful sign of his passion and dedication to the future of Wests Tigers.

“As a proud local junior, David embodies all of the core values we hold dearly at Wests Tigers — that is, team, excellence and respect — and constantly strives to make both himself and the team better in every way.

“I have no doubt that David’s loyalty to Wests Tigers is an inspiration to all local juniors at Wests Tigers and that he will play a leading role in delivering the on-field success that the Members and fans of this club deserve.”

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe echoed his congratulations to Nofoaluma.

“As a club, we’re extremely proud to see David commit his future to Wests Tigers,” Pascoe said. “As a local junior and one-club player, David epitomises what it means to be Wests Tigers and it is clear that he loves playing in the colours of our club.

“His decision to commit his future to Wests Tigers further highlights the strong future that we are building at the club and I’m sure that David will play a big part in delivering that.”

David epitomises what it means to be Wests Tigers.

Wests Tigers Coach Michael Maguire said Nofoaluma’s positive attitude and love for the club was a tremendous asset for the team.

“I’m really pleased to see David continue his time with Wests Tigers,” Maguire said.

“He has worked extremely hard at his game to continue to improve not only himself but the team as a whole and has grown into one of the senior players at Wests Tigers.

“David has a tremendous love for the club but, more importantly, has a determined desire for it to be successful and continues to work extremely hard to make that happen.

“I’m really looking forward to watching him continue to improve over the coming years and play a leading role in the success of this club moving forward.”

So, it is this year AND four more...

Sigh.

He’s always been contracted for 2021, this isn’t new he’s been training with us for a few months now ? it’s 4 more years after this one, that’s when he was off contract

Have been following Nofo's career since first seeing him play for us in a winning U20 GF side a few years ago. Korobiete was in the same team. May have a few defensive flaws but nobody tries harder every game. Great and necessary re-signing.

it is lovely we can resign nofo to a nice long 4 year contract his defence has always been rock solid.

Give it a rest. He's been offered a fair deal and that's all that matters.

Some people just hate Nofo, I don’t get it either

No one 'hates' Nofa...let's not be silly about this.

But his D has been attrociuos no matter who we paired him with...so, either he can't read overlaps, or every single center inside him was to blame.

Nofa and BJ ranked second worst for D last year in the NRL...the only combo worse, ironically, was Esan Marster's and his winger.

I hope I am really wrong and he turns into a defensive force. But too many fans seem to see Nofa's stats and not realise he gives up more than he provides.

4 - 8 = minus 4.

Christ some people are unbelievable. 31 is not over the hill for an NRL player unless their body is breaking down. I swear this site is full of 12 year olds sometimes. It’s a good deal.

for a half it is not old for a winger maybe it is. Look at penrith moving mansour in to bring in young Staines

Well if we had Staines i'd be telling one of our wingers to move on too. Comparing Mansour and Nofo is silly as one wanted to start a new deal at 30 while the other will be finishing his at 30 with a further one year option **in the clubs favour**. It's good business.

it's the nofo in 4 years that is comparible to mansour now...
if the fourth year is in clubs favour then that changes things

I don't hate Nofo or any player. I am just of the opinion it's not a good deal. I hope i'm wrong and look like a moron because I want him to play well.

I like his attacking play
defensively I am not a fan
hope I am wrong and he kills it defensively for the next 5 years

Will he kiss his tigers emblem when he scores again

What offends people so much about this?

Same with Beau Ryan...

I just don't get it. Two players who did and do put everything out there for our club, and get disrespected for it because they show that passion that, strangely, is viewed negatively.

I actually like the fact that he kissed the emblem
It shows his passion for the club
It wasn't ment to be disrespectful at all
It was a comment taken the wrong way
Hopefully he does it again to show his absolute passion for our club and brand
Hopefully a few others follow suit

Yah sorry I may have taken you the wrong way - but it's something I've seen come up often here which is why I thought I'd ask the question.

Will be very happy to be proven wrong, but I think it is a terrible deal.

And I like Nofa, the person and clubman.

But Nofa the winger is, at best, around 10th in the comp...and bottom few for defensive IQ.

Personally, I feel strongly that you don't give a poor D winger a long, long deal.

This is a forum, and we can agree to disagree...and both hope you and others are right.

Given Lee's earlier comments on Nofo it appears likely he overruled Hartigan and Madge on the length of the contract.
I'm happy to have Nofo locked up for the long-term. He plays a big role in our culture and it's important to reciprocate that in his contract, especially given our handling of previous players in the past.

I don’t think any less of your view , we are all allowed to have our say don’t worry. I just think since it’s done, we should support the club rather than moan. It’s done.

Can’t keep both parties happy ?

The thing is mate, we already gave him 4 years this contract and another 3 years is very generous at his age. 4 is to the point his manager and him are taking advantage.

Simple, without his hard runs, Brooks would be kicking from our 30m on the last tackle at the best! It remains to be seen, who will take the ball on 1st or 2nd tackle, hopefully that will be Tamou, Twall and JO, and it will not be that ‘props job is just to run good decoys’!?

If nothing else, from a PR perspective this is the right move. WTs would have been hammered from pillar to post if he left under a stink cloud.
Is it the right move for on field performance? Only time will tell.

I'm happy he's staying would have been strange to see him in a different jersey, hope he scores 25 tries this year.

Congrats to David on his re-signing with the club...🐯

Fingers crossed the long contract doesn’t bite the club in the butt at the back end of it - hopefully that last year is in the Clubs favour🤞.

I have seen Nofoalama play fullback in his under 20 team with the club. The bonus is that he is quite a safe fullback with speed, capable of filling that position if the need arises. With the wingers we have signed/likely to sign this season he could easily find himself playing fullback when the need arises.

The last time Nofo played fullback was our last game due to the Benji injury... and he went quite okay from what I saw?
So I agree, he does offer cover for fullback and we're pretty thin there.

The contract is probably an overpay in its last year or two, and I'd have preferred it to only extend to the end of 2023 instead of 2024 (or possibly 2025 if the club option story is incorrect). It's certainly the duration more than the (reported) dollar value that bothers me.

But let's keep this in perspective - calling this a Packer/Reynolds sized disaster is a ridiculous overstatement. For one thing, the annual dollar value is reported to be barely half what those two got. For another, those two were past it when they arrived and never contributed anything on the park - not once. Barring injury, there's no reason why Nofa can't be a good to very good winger for at least another three years.

The other thing to consider is that the Tigers have to spend their money somewhere. We haven't had the best track record of persuading free agents to sign of late and there's a good chance we're going to go into 2021 well below the cap - and with more coming off before 2022. We've got precisely one established winger in the squad. The options weren't re-sign Nofa or use the money to get, I dunno, Cameron Munster. We went hard after JAC and at least kicked the tyres on Mansour. What other good first grade wingers were we about to sign?

But we've been thin at fullback since Tedesco left. I have to assume that if Nofa hasn't been used there by now he's probably not viewed as a plausible option by the coaching staff.
