Departures

quote="Cultured Bogan"]Groat was ruined by being brought on too early by Sheens. He had the size and showed he had what it took in U20's to be a good front rower. Sheens though he'd simply follow Woods' lead and flower early.

Woods was one out of the box, rarer than hens teeth for props.

Groat was a big fat kid, good at pushing little kids around - that's all!!

Ruined… He never had it!! Can't even get a gig in the ESL

I don't agree but that's your opinion I guess.

Dunno why you cant agree…
All is truth.

He was heaps fat.
Never made an impact.

I stated why I thought he never fired. He simply wasn't ready for first grade as an 18 year old. A lot of young props aren't.

Truth is subjective when you try to state opinions as facts.

Maybe he wasn't ready "As an 18 year old" History will never know if he would have ever been ready for NRL.
One thing history does know now, Is that he is not an NRL player at the moment.

That may change - Others, Including Ryan Tandy came home late in their careers and made names for themselves as a solid prop - Tandy was 6 years after he debuted.

Or what about Sam Moa? Came through same time as Benji. Captain of Keebra Park, signed with WT, couldn't make it here (no Holden/Toyota Cup those days), couldn't make it at Sharks, went to ESL and now a gun for the Rorters in his late 20's.

Moa was destined for stardom but Sheens simply didn't like his style of play. Would play 50-60 mins in both Flegg and premier league on the same day back then. Think Sheens liked more skillful props than those who just run hard and fast.

Don't know how much of a go he really got at the sharks, but then went ot the uk, kept it simple and became a standout runner of the ball as a prop. Came back to the roosters, doesn't try do too much, and he's very god at it.

Not sure if he was really a late bloomer, or just never got his chance til his mid 20s. Quite similar to Taupau.

JJ Felise is quite similar to Moa, although i'd even say a tad better than Moa. Slightly less impact but a ton more workrate and skill.

Just the other day I was reading an old thread with people raving about Groat after a semis win. I'm not saying he was a world beater, but he did OK when he was with a decent pack in 2011.

Funny in that thread, every one talking him up against the dragons - the next week he was mostly responsible for us losing the Warriors semi. Giving away a stupid penalty and then pretending to be a witches hat when Kevin Locke ran around him…
