Disappointing season

I know these guys are going to make the semi's but given the talent in the squad they really should have finished further up the ladder.
I understand that a few of the stars have been playing either NRL or NSW cup but regardless this side is jam packed full of Aus School boys and highly regarded players.
This side will need to have a good finals campaign to have a season befitting their talent

This is why im not sure about payten stepping up as head coach as was proposed when Potter seemed to be going.

DUnno he can handle NRL at the moment.

I mean, if they go all the way again that's great but it was still a very inconsistent season.

i think he can learn a lot by being assistant next year though.

The biggest issue the Under 20s team has is conceding penalties, and often a string of them in a row. We have the talent to attack and we showed that against the Roosters two weeks ago when we put 24 points on in the first half. If the side can build their discipline then they will improve and not have to rely on their defence.

They also don't know how to stay switched on for 80mins! You can pretty much count on that if the boys come out switched on, they will turn off in the last 10mins of the half; and if they have a poor starting 10mins they will finish off strong like they did against the Titans!

Yep, I rate Todd but he does need to do some time under a senior coach. My ideal scenario is that he goes off to another club and gets away from the WT, and works for a couple of years under say a Bellamy, Maguire or Robinson then comes back and coaches WT.

Would be nice to be able to guarantee that I reckon!

Spoke to one of the Players after they played Saints & i asked if they lost & he said yes but there is always next week, Also they dont stay to watch First Grade which is surprising.

Its probably because firstly the club, Todd and Co, don't enforce it and secondly I think you will find the boys feel that since FG don't support them, why should the 20's stay and support FG?!! Also keeping in mind that right throughout the 20's finals campaign last year, not once did FG show up and support them….. Not even for the Grand Final!!

I think it depends upon what you want to get out of the under 20s, because in my opinion we've actually had a very good season. If you look at the players in the FG side and those that have played FG this year - there are a large number who have come through this side under Payten and excelled at the top level. For me, the fact we've had Nofoaluma, Tedesco, Sironen, Brooks, Brown all play FG from this year's 20s ago means we've had a successful year. Then add in the large group from last year's 20s and NSW Cup, and you've got a fair side.

We've had teams that are possibly more talented than this one but haven't been successful in the U20s, so their position on the ladder at the moment isn't a major worry for me - in fact the Tigers are the team everyone is fearing in the finals and that should play into our hands.

I think our 1 and 7-13 are all very good. I think we struggle to win sometimes due to lack of strike power in the centres or on the wing.

I think the centres are poor, and we're only really dangerous in the halves, fullback and on one wing. The forward pack is still one of the smaller ones going around although there are a couple of likely prospects. Next season's squad could quite possibly be stronger.

I think its a simple case of a former prop who does not have the technical coaching knowledge or ability to 'coach' backs at this level!

I think up until now he has relied on players such as Nofo, Koro, Siro, Miller who were FG ready, but now those players have been elevated to FG, he now has backs that actually need coaching and are not performing at their potential because Payten doesn't actually know how to coach them to their potential!!

I have no doubt he is a good coach but I honestly believe this season has exposed his coaching inexperience, especially when it comes to the backs!

Holy Gotham City!

Let me say that any Tigers team that makes the finals in consecutive years is doing it's job. I WISH the first grade side was as consistently making finals appearances as NYC.

If they stopped taking players to play in meaningless NRL games they would not be in the position they are in. Brooks & Brown did not need to play in the Dragons game and as a consequence we lost momentum and the next 2 games. I think Payten had done a great job with his players getting swapped out at the last minute.

You have to look at the big picture, it was good for both to get that experience in the NRL, and the 20’s at that stage were safely in the 8 and very unlikely to get a top 4 spot.

Will Payten still be NYC Coach in 2014 aswell as NRL Assistant.?

I don't know the NYC result, did they make the Play Offs or not?.

Yes. They spanked the Cowboys 48 - 14 to finish 5th. They will now go on to play the Broncos next weekend!
