Drugs, sex, domestic violence: football’s cover-up

Can we get a comment from Souths on the article?

We'll just need to run through about 5 law firms first.

One implication from the allegations is that the medical retirement was used to get him out of the Club because of what was known. That it came with the added bonus of salary cap relief which allowed the purchase of .......

How widely was this kniwn?.

The cap cheating is inconsequential to me in regard to this.

Footy is secondary to the welfare of his ex-wife, kids and family.

True. The extent of the club's knowledge of the allegations is an extremely serious matter.

By all means go over the cap stuff in due course, but the questions that should be asked first are how deep was the knowledge of Souths officials of the alleged behaviour, and what course was made to investigate, address and rehabilitate alleged behaviour and the conduct of the doctor? After that is investigated and sorted, then we can worry about cap rorts and the like.

The allegation about the name on the prescription written by the Club doctor is right up there.

There is a picture of that in the article as well - oops

Must be some factual data to back up allegations.

The article says in its introduction:

"A four-month investigation by The Australian has uncovered pharmaceutical records, sworn statements to NSW Police, statutory declarations, witness accounts, call logs, emails, text messages, bank records, WhatsApp exchanges and Uber receipts detailing Burgess’s alleged episodes of drug use, domestic violence and abusive behaviour."

Sounds like they have plenty of evidence. And you can bet that their lawyers have gone over it with a fine tooth comb. They will not be leaving themselves open to easily provable defamation claims.

This is the part which should be most concerning for Souths/Burgess and the Doctor who stands to lose his career. The Editor and senior management at The Australian would surely have held several meetings to discuss the ramifications of publishing this as legal action will be the first thing thrown back at them.

So they either have the evidence to back their claims (and there's a hell of a lot of quoted conversations and messages in the report), or this is the biggest bluff in Australian sporting journalism and they're going to be sued for significant damages. I don't think they'd be that stupid to make this stuff up, they're not the DT afterall.

And if they have confirmed NSW Police are investigating, well again they need to tread carefully here as this article could potentially compromise the investigation. But I would suggest if they have done their homework, the police would be aware that this was coming out in the media.

This could well be more interesting than the ridiculous US election.

How does a media organisation obtain police statements?
I'd have thought they'd be confidential.

This is what can happen when you are told your the best thing on 2 legs... Remember when we couldn't get away from him... On. 9 every second, on every footy program... in the social pages of the papers God knows why... Could never work that out what's so interesting about an ugly Pom.who sounds like he's got a mouth full of phlegm (thnx ftb I think 😂)

They definitely need to be careful. If these police investigations end up coming to nothing then you can bet that Souths and Sam himself will come after them hard.

For sure more interesting than anything happening in the US that’s for sure. Interested to see what happens with the NRL, Souths and the police and Sam. I hope that if it’s true that Sam and Souths cop major Punishment.

Not only should Souths be charged by the NRL but from the police as well knowing what’s going on and hiding it. Just disgusting that they cared more about football than the poor woman suffering through this.

So was the doctor that allegedly issued prescriptions in false names, organised off the record drug testing and based treatment options on his clients reputation and earning capacity the same doctor that provided a report supporting the medical retirement of 2 players that have subsequently launched a comeback?

The person making the statement can release them to anyone they wish. And if they become public knowledge in court mention date I guess.

Always overated, not suprised one but. And this is almost the typical footballer these days. It wouldnt' be just Souths, that's for sure. I know of some major issues brewing at another very successful club this year that haven't quite come out yet, but they will.

If Souths don't confess to everything stated in this story, then their likely next move will be to discredit the people involved. Phoebe, her parents, everyone there. This will probably get very very nasty.

Hopefully whatever happened (and I have my own suspicions as a lot of people will), I hope* the victims in this are strong enough to cop the ensuing onslaught. Because it is coming.

Exactly right. I would give this article half the consideration if it came from DT, the fact it came from the Australian gives the accusations a lot more weight

Hopefully thats a question the Daily Telegraph and Fox news reporters should be asking now.

Lets see if they go for blood or back off because of who the player is and who he plays for.

I really thought that story about a week or two ago about the possibility of Sam coming back to the NRL was testing the waters of public opinion. Putting the story out there, to see if they could get away with it. I guess the answer is no. And some.

100%. Can’t believe some are using this to kick Souths. If it’s true, the focus needs to be on the people hurt. Everything else comes later

The alleged presence of a Souths official at a residence at the time where domestic violence may have occurred and this has gone unreported to presumably the Integrity Unit is a significant matter. The same again for the alleged prescription issue and subsequent alleged drug testing. It is inextricably linked.

The priority is definitely the wellbeing of all victims and the alleged perpetrators as well.

Secondly, everyone involved in the cover-up should be banned for life. No integrity whatsoever.

Burgess stands down from Rabbitohs, Fox Sports over drug, domestic abuse allegations

Former South Sydney star Sam Burgess has stood down from his roles as Rabbitohs coaching assistant and Fox Sports commentator following serious allegations of drug use and domestic violence.

NSW Police and the NRL integrity unit have launched separate investigations into allegations levelled against the former South Sydney skipper.

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo said if the allegations were found to be true he would be taking the "strongest possible action" against Burgess and the club.

"The allegations that were made ... is new information to the NRL. We will conduct a thorough investigation and if information has been withheld by bodies we will take the appropriate action," he said. "These are really serious matters, these are serious allegations. We will put all of our resources into getting to the bottom of what occurred.

NSW Police said they had launched their own investigation.

"On Wednesday 30 September 2020, officers from The Hume Police District received a report outlining various allegations relating to the conduct of a 31-year-old man," a NSW Police Force spokesperson said.

"Police have commenced inquiries and as these inquiries are in their infancy, no further comment will be provided at this time."

Australia Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys told 2GB on Friday that, as far as he was aware, the NRL had no prior knowledge of the claims.

"It would be totally inappropriate to comment on this specific case. I don't have sufficient facts. Like anyone else in the community, you have to provide due process and natural justice and Sam should be afforded that," he said.

"Let me stress that the NRL has a zero tolerance, and will always have a zero tolerance, for violence against women.

"But in this instance, I think that the appropriate action is to investigate it, get all the facts, and make a judgment after that.

"Once we have all that information, all the facts, and everybody's version, we will make the appropriate decisions."

The Australian newspaper reported Mr Burgess received medical attention during a drug-fuelled episode in 2018, and a club doctor allegedly injected him with liquid tranquilliser, obtained through a prescription written in someone else's name.

Abdo said the club doctor would still be allowed to work at the club until the investigation was complete.

"Because these are allegations, we don't have the facts before us we are not going to be taking any further action until such time as we have the information needed to do that," he said. "However I believe Sam Burgess has stood himself down from South Sydney Rabbitohs duties this weekend and I also believe he has stood down from Fox Sports."

Following an investigation, the publication revealed pharmaceutical records, statements to NSW Police, witness accounts, emails, text messages and bank records detailing the former South Sydney Rabbitohs captain’s behaviour.

Mr Burgess' lawyer Mark O’Brien declined to comment to the Herald.

Mr Burgess retired from the NRL at the end of the 2019 season after suffering a chronic shoulder injury. He is now an assistant coach with the club. The English import signed a four-year extension with the club in 2018 and was signed to play with the club until 2023.

He led the club to the premiership in 2014, after breaking his cheekbone in the opening tackle of the grand final against the Bulldogs.

The allegations come on the eve of the finals. The Rabbitohs finished in sixth place this season and face the seventh-placed Knights in a sudden-death play-off at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

There has been a lot of 'alleged' sweeping under the carpet of incidents before in the NRL, dating back a long time. I do feel that on this occasion there is significantly more information which has flowed through to the public, and heads will have to roll.

Who's heads, we will see.
