Drugs, sex, domestic violence: football’s cover-up

The NRL’s integrity unit will launch an investigation into serious claims surrounding South Sydney rugby league club and its former forward and development coach Sam Burgess.

NRL boss Andrew Abdo said there were “new allegations” and he would speak with South Sydney officials on Friday.

“These allegations are very serious and I’ve instructed the Integrity Unit to investigate the claims as a priority,” Abdo said.

“We will also seek the advice of police and other relevant authorities throughout this process.

“This is new information for the NRL and it is important we now gather the facts. The allegations have not yet been tested and due process will be followed as we undertake a thorough investigation.

“There is no place in our game for violence, harassment or abuse against women. If anyone is found guilty of these allegations we will take the strongest possible action.”

Earlier, ARLC chairman Peter V’landys said the explosive allegations of a Rabbitohs club cover-up of substance abuse, violence and harassment to protect Burgess, were “pretty serious.”

The allegations, contained in a report by The Australian newspaper, have been vehemently denied by Burgess’ lawyer.

The South Sydney club are also accused of using fake identities to hide results for drug tests for illegal substances.

V’landys on Friday told The Daily Telegraph that NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo would launch an immediate investigation.

“Every person in the community deserves due process and natural justice,” V’landys said.

“The allegations have to be tested and we have to undertake an investigation.

“We should have no prejudgement.

“Both Sam and the club should be afforded that.

“And without prejudging this instance, I stress that we have zero tolerance for violence against women or children, and we will never tolerate it.

“But we have to investigate this.

“We can’t not give them the opportunity of due process and natural justice.”

V’landys said the NRL’s integrity department would seek information from The Australian.

“We are taking the matter pretty serious because these are serious allegations,” V’landys added.

“But I have to keep stressing that he has to be given the opportunity to defend himself.

“At this stage these are allegations. They are not proven and they are not tested.”

Asked if Burgess would be able to stay in the South Sydney ‘bubble’ ahead of the Rabbitohs’ opening finals clash against Newcastle on Sunday, V’landys reiterated: “Again, at this stage they are allegations. We will start up an immediate investigation and see what evidence we can get.

“And if we do have sufficient evidence we will take the appropriate action. But until we see the evidence and until we see the facts you can’t make a judgment.”

Burgess has been working on the South Sydney coaching staff this season.

Can we get a comment from Souths on the article?

We'll just need to run through about 5 law firms first.

One implication from the allegations is that the medical retirement was used to get him out of the Club because of what was known. That it came with the added bonus of salary cap relief which allowed the purchase of .......

How widely was this kniwn?.

The cap cheating is inconsequential to me in regard to this.

Footy is secondary to the welfare of his ex-wife, kids and family.

True. The extent of the club's knowledge of the allegations is an extremely serious matter.

By all means go over the cap stuff in due course, but the questions that should be asked first are how deep was the knowledge of Souths officials of the alleged behaviour, and what course was made to investigate, address and rehabilitate alleged behaviour and the conduct of the doctor? After that is investigated and sorted, then we can worry about cap rorts and the like.

It’s huge very detailed sources proof in writing and police records proof Russell the grub Crowe covering up for his beloved footy team

Crowe’s involvement in covering up surprises me a little. For all his weirdness and volatility he has always come across as a person who has a lot of respect for women. I’m really surprised he would allow grub Burgess to carry on in this manner without saying something to him, let alone condone it altogether.

Bennett too

The allegation about the name on the prescription written by the Club doctor is right up there.

Obviously the NRL could punish Souths pretty hard if it’s found they knew about this and covered it up, but can they punish Burgess for anything? It happened when he was a player but he doesn’t play anymore so can they really do anything to him? Genuinely asking cause I’m not sure

How about the allegation that Greenburg on behalf of the NRL telling Sam mid investigation that he had nothing to worry about? Who will investigate the NRL's behaviour?

If Burgess is guilty of abuse and had INTENTION to hurt, then i hope justice finds him, and teaches him a harsh lesson. Im just confused at Sam wanting to hurt someone by leaning onto them

With two children in her care his wife would have needed to lean on Sam. Unfortunately Sam does not appear to be that sort of person.

You can only hope the NRL integrity unit look into things more efficiently under Abdo as compared to when Turdberg was in charge.Hopefully no rock is left unturned unlike the old days when the woman in Melbourne who made the complaints wasnt even allegedly interviewed by them.

I’m very surprised people think there will be any difference just because Greenberg isn’t around. NRL is gonna have favourites no matter who’s in front of the camera.

It has the potential to be a disaster that Souths could take years to recover from.

What sponsor is going to want to be associated with this type of behaviour?

How does this play out from the gender equality point of view?

We have Women in League round yet we condone (by covering up this type of behaviour) violence against women?

Souths have club officials complicit in the behaviour by covering it up?

Souths didn't make the NRL aware that one of their players was taking illegal drugs (there is still a three strikes and you're policy isn't there)?

The club doctor knowingly writes a prescription in the wrong name and then administers the drug to a different person?

Wow if Souths are the pride of the league, the league has got some pretty significant problems?

That's just the tip of the iceberg....

There was a second doctor involved allegedly at the carpark drug test.

The Police.

But is it a police matter if the NRL didn't do due diligence in investigating an internal matter and following their own policies/guidelines/practices?

No due diligence from NRL when they have a Women in League round? Very hypocritical from NRL don't you think?

100%. Can’t believe some are using this to kick Souths. If it’s true, the focus needs to be on the people hurt. Everything else comes later
