Canberra star fullback Josh Dugan completed three-quarters of yesterday's training session, and is a chance of playing his first match of the season against Wests Tigers at Campbelltown on Saturday.
Dugan has not played since limping off during the trial against Canterbury at Tamworth about three weeks ago. Raiders coach David Furner said he was a ''day-by-day'' proposition, and it would be up to the medical staff when the fullback would return to action.
''He's at a stage now where he's joined team training but he only finished about three-quarters,'' he said. ''It's still a bit touchy. He got through what he needed to get through. We need to be thinking about long term but short term it'd be nice to have him in there - at this stage, I'm not sure [whether he'll play].''
How he pulls up today will provide a clearer picture of Dugan's prospects of facing the Tigers.
Canberra's acting captain, David Shillington, had his ''fingers crossed'' Dugan, whom he described as a ''fair weapon'', would be back this weekend.
''I asked him yesterday, and it looked like he'd be right to go,'' Shillington said. ''It's a bit of an unusual injury. They can't pinpoint what's going on there.''
Under a slight cloud himself, Shillington decided not to undergo a scan on his knee, which sustained bone bruising in the 16-point loss to Brisbane on Friday. Initially, he feared the worse, having had a reconstruction on each knee in the past, but it came good by the end of the match. The big prop was able to get through a whole training session and, barring an adverse reaction, will be named today.
