DANIEL Mortimer's NRL career was at a crossroads last night after the Eels gave him their blessing to explore options in the UK Super League.
Despite having two years to run on his current deal, Mortimer yesterday approached Parramatta CEO Paul Osborne via his agent for permission to negotiate elsewhere.
The Daily Telegraph understands Mortimer's manager, Steve Gillis, has already made preliminary contact with new Salford coach Mat Parish.
British sources last night revealed Parish - who is in the market for a new playmaking utility - had been offered Mortimer's services this week.
Speaking shortly before the Eels tackled Canterbury at ANZ Stadium last night Osborne confirmed the club had agreed to Mortimer's request. "Steve contacted me today to see if we would be OK for Daniel to have a look around and see what opportunities might be out there," Osborne said.
"We agreed to the request, but I'd like to stress that they haven't asked for a release or anything like that."
The development comes with Mortimer seemingly out of the frame as a halves option for Eels coach Stephen Kearney, who dropped the 22-year-old to NSW Cup feeder side Wentworthville last month.
Despite injuries to topline halves Jeff Robson and Casey Macguire, Kearney has continually overlooked Mortimer in favour of makeshift options Reni Maitua, Luke Burt and, more recently, Jarryd Hayne.
Mortimer's fall down the pecking order sparked discussion about his prospects, but Kearney maintained the 2009 Rookie of the Year finalist would not be considered in any other position but five-eighth.
After a break-out debut season, Mortimer commanded a rich three-year contract to remain at Parramatta in the face of a sustained bid from the Bulldogs. But that sparkling first-up form never returned as opposition teams started to target him heavily in defence last season.
It's believed a release, if reached, would free up more than $500,000 in Parramatta's cap over the next two years enabling the club to comfortably accommodate Maroons centre Willie Tonga without shedding any further players.
However, The Daily Telegraph also understands another contracted member of the NRL squad is already in extended negotiations to join an English club.
