Eels Exchange deal?

You are all writing Mortimer off so readily and probably with good reason, based on current form, but the guy is still quite young and there is always a chance that he will flourish in a different team, in a different culture, under a new coach. I thought I saw potential there when he first surfaced at Parramatta a couple of years ago. Perhaps he just needs to be in the right environment for that potential to be realised. Just a thought.

Unless hen can make a hot dog or clean bird poo off grand stand seats , Mortimer has nothing to offer Wests Tigers , ever .

Daniel Mortimer free to leave Eels for Super League

DANIEL Mortimer's NRL career was at a crossroads last night after the Eels gave him their blessing to explore options in the UK Super League.

Despite having two years to run on his current deal, Mortimer yesterday approached Parramatta CEO Paul Osborne via his agent for permission to negotiate elsewhere.

The Daily Telegraph understands Mortimer's manager, Steve Gillis, has already made preliminary contact with new Salford coach Mat Parish.

British sources last night revealed Parish - who is in the market for a new playmaking utility - had been offered Mortimer's services this week.

Speaking shortly before the Eels tackled Canterbury at ANZ Stadium last night Osborne confirmed the club had agreed to Mortimer's request. "Steve contacted me today to see if we would be OK for Daniel to have a look around and see what opportunities might be out there," Osborne said.

"We agreed to the request, but I'd like to stress that they haven't asked for a release or anything like that."

The development comes with Mortimer seemingly out of the frame as a halves option for Eels coach Stephen Kearney, who dropped the 22-year-old to NSW Cup feeder side Wentworthville last month.

Despite injuries to topline halves Jeff Robson and Casey Macguire, Kearney has continually overlooked Mortimer in favour of makeshift options Reni Maitua, Luke Burt and, more recently, Jarryd Hayne.

Mortimer's fall down the pecking order sparked discussion about his prospects, but Kearney maintained the 2009 Rookie of the Year finalist would not be considered in any other position but five-eighth.

After a break-out debut season, Mortimer commanded a rich three-year contract to remain at Parramatta in the face of a sustained bid from the Bulldogs. But that sparkling first-up form never returned as opposition teams started to target him heavily in defence last season.

It's believed a release, if reached, would free up more than $500,000 in Parramatta's cap over the next two years enabling the club to comfortably accommodate Maroons centre Willie Tonga without shedding any further players.

However, The Daily Telegraph also understands another contracted member of the NRL squad is already in extended negotiations to join an English club.

classic example of 2nd year syndrome.
goes well in his first season, then in the next season when opponents are wary of him, not able to re-produce his form.
if he gets to go overseas, and plays well good on him.
it did not appear to hurt Jamie Lyon's career when he did the same.

who knows he may comeback a better all round player.
its up to him to prove it.

Just because he has a famous name doesn't mean he is good, if he signs with the tigers he will end up playing in nsw cup like arana taumata and will go to another club and be in the starting side for whatever club every week.

some would disagree with you about that
there are people who seem to think that Jordon Marshall is going to be a superstar :crazy

I am sure they will because if we get rid of rob lui than there may be a place for him, but atm i don't see how we can get him if he will not end up playing first grade.

Mortimer is rubbish. He has cost the Eels more than Paul Carige.

This rumour had better be false.

Mortimer is the most overrated player of all time, would never have played first grade without his surname.

I dunno….would be interesting to see how he goes behind a decent pack of forwards.
The Parra #7 jumper has too much pressure attached to it

Leave the organizing to Benji and play Mortimer as a link man, he is a good defender and a good kick chaser, might just work but really Miller and Young Siro should be given a go before a outsider

He is probably the worst defender in the league thats why hes been punted.
He make Lui look like Hindmarsh.& surely we dont need need anothe defensive liability in the 1/2s
