Wests Tigers back-rower Gareth Ellis has been described as the club's greatest English import by the man many believed would hold that title forever.

Great Britain champion Ellery Hanley, named the greatest British rugby league player of all time in 2007, says Ellis' feats in the black and gold eclipse anything he did for the club.

Ellis, who is confident of returning from a foot injury against the Bulldogs in round 18, has been named the Tigers' player of the year in each of his three seasons at the club.

"He's way up there (as one of England's best ever imports) in my opinion," Hanley, who is in Sydney to be inducted into the Tigers Hall of Fame at a gala dinner on Wednesday, said on Friday.

"I put him above even myself, and I believe that.

"I was a very honest player on the football paddock and did all the right things.

"(But) what he's been very good at is being consistent. To be voted the player of the season by the Wests Tigers is absolutely wonderful.

"He deserves all the honours and big wraps he's received. He's been outstanding.

"There's no question about it. He's looked after himself and he's a true athlete.

"It gives me great pleasure in saying that.

"To come from England and to play out in Australia in the hardest competition and to perform week in, week out consistently. He's done a good job."

While Ellis was humbled by the praise from Hanley, he had even better news for Tigers fans desperate to see him back on the field.

"I started running this week for the first time in about 11 weeks so that's been different," Ellis told AAP.

The 31-year-old, who will return to the English Super League with Hull FC at the end of the season, said while he is shattered to have missed so much of his final year with the Tigers he does see a silver lining in the injury-ravaged campaign.

A tough-as-nails player, Ellis typically is carrying half a dozen niggling injuries by the halfway mark of the year.

But by featuring in just four matches in 2012 due to a Jones fracture in his left foot, he believes the rest of his body has never felt better.

And that spells bad news for rival clubs when he makes a comeback with eight weeks left before the finals.

"There's not many seasons you go through where you're not nursing some injury throughout the year," Ellis said.

"So to be able to have this time off during the year is not the greatest thing, but looking at the positives it should be a great addition to our squad when I get back.

"I'll be a bit fresher. I can bring the boys through that are nursing injuries and add a bit of enthusiasm to the squad again."

I was going to suggest Brian Lockwood but just looked up his stats and I would now rate him behind Ellis with Ellery best player. Funny how your memories as a kid enhance the truth, I think I rated Lockwood so high because of the famous flick pass to Neil Pringle.

alf give it up….schofield was a better player for the balmain club then hanley was...but i guess ellery gets more mention because he made a bigger impact over a short period and Balmain made the grand final that year.

Harvey howard was average but you cant ever say he didnt have plenty of ticker and he stuck by the magpies so that says something.

Harvey was a legend, far from average. And to top it off finished off his career in Australia with a premiership. A feat not many other Poms can claim

I didn't mention Schofield?

Sorry Harvey Howard was my first man crush; always had a soft spot for the big man

You're a funny little man, biting to every comment as usual. So what what? the fact he won a comp? not bad for an 'average' first grader huh?

Little man…yes im not fat heap.. actually you seem to be in every topic look how many post you make.

So your a good footballer if you win a comp.... you judge players and teams on grand final wins.interesting

He was average(YOU DON'T AGREE THAT'S FINE)could only make 1team on a consistent basis.

LOL what lame logic. Harvey was only one of about 3 or 4 players for the Maggies who were genuine first graders back in the late 90's who could have made it easily into fg eleswhere. Brisbane have never been a team to sign average first graders so that says a lot. Funnily enough 2 Magpies from that time period went on to win premierships with the Broncs, the other being Shane Perry in 06\. Cleary there must have been something in the water

lame logic..he played as a benchy on a winning broncos team that was basically a state of origin side and that makes him(by your logic) a legend.Read what you wrote

He was bought as back up…he stayed one year then went home to play in England....sorry im not get excited over him like you are.congrats to you.

Brisbane also didn't lose players they wanted to keep he was there for 1 year.

I said he had ticker and was solid...hes record would suggest it also.

Anyway back on topic i also forgot about Dave Topliss in the mid 70s he was great for Balmain also.

No i actually mentioned Howard first :unamused:

Anayway you're response WAS an over reaction. I called him a legend, so what? did i say he was a legend due to his on-field achievments? believe it or not, in my eyes Tim Simona is a legend, he's a great guy, just like Harvey was. Like i said, an over-reaction. Anyway its pointless going any further with you, like always

I replied to alf who then replied to me…with no problems....then you put your twist on it like nobody else can.

Im wasting my time explaining anything to you.Read what you wrote straight after i made a post on the topic.

Harvey may be the best bloke off field im not sure but it wasn't what the discussion was about

Posts have been deleted. Please stay on topic and keep the personal stuff out of it.

Two very different players Gaz & Celery…..hard to compare, tho Ellery certainly shades gaz in the ego stakes.

Harvey Howard. The best for the pies. Hanley went ok and put bums on seats. I love Schofield and I have more fonder memories of him than Ellery.

He's wasn't nearly as average as this post. Harvey Howard was average. :crazy
