Because outside of having a last name like verstappen or Schumacher , that’s a big tick in the box for getting to F1 with the lower end teams like Williams and haas .
Not to the extent that some drivers do - his fellow Alpine team mate Zhou from China has financial backing. Oscar's advantage is that he's one of, if not the most talented driver in F2 at the moment, and he's got Mark Webber managing him, who obviously has contacts galore in F1 still, and had a large part in getting Oscar his seat at Prema this year.
All Oscar can do is keep performing and hopefully the results will give him his opportunity. I reckon he could be of similar pedigree to the likes of Leclerc, Norris etc. I think Tsunoda, Latifi, Giovinazzi and Mazepin are lucky to be in F1.
Mazepin , like stroll isn’t going anywhere , despite his clear lack of talent unfortunately. Daddy is about to buy a controlling interest in Haas .
A seat might open up at Alfa Romeo or Williams . He’s better than Latifi , and Kimi
Williams is his best bet as Alfa Romeo is affiliated with Ferrari, so you could see Schumacher slide across there if Kimi hangs up the gloves, and then Schwartzman gets a seat at Haas.
Isn’t schwartzman coming 10th? Or is it just he’s quick and had bad luck .
Has bad luck every now and then, or is inconsistent I guess. Oscar took 3rd in the feature F2 race tonight and now has an 5 point lead heading into Monza. Zhou jumped him at the start and took the win but didn't score any points in the sprint events whereas Oscar did. He's proving ultra consistent at the pointy end which is great to see.
It seems zhos car is just faster . After watching Oscar he’s a bit like Danny ric. Really good on race day / overtaking . But like all aussies in f1 , horrible at the starts .
I remember Webber would have won so many more races , if he could just nail his start . Soo many times he had to make up ground he lost into the first corner .
Just read the post race presser...Oscar said his car didn't have the same pace today as it did during the sprints where he set fastest lap of the race in both sprints. Zhou's pace obviously improved today. Oscar's start cost him as the F2 drivers have all had to learn a new procedure due to changes around the throttle - something for him to work on for Monza, but given it took Zhou 3 years to get out of Formula 3, and this is his 3rd in F2, Oscar is doing a damn fine job leading halfway through the season in his rookie season.
Yea Zhou will get to f1 first . It’s simply a matter of economics. But Piastri is obviously infinitely more talented .
F3 last year champ win , and f2 this year champ lead . He’s a goodin. I could see him spending another year in f2 and taking Alonso’s seat in 23 . Or simply replacing ocon next year . Wait and see I guess .
A lot will depend on who wins F2 this year mate - the championship winner cannot drive in F2 again, so if Oscar can hold his form and consistency, then he's a chance of jagging an F1 seat - Mark Webber is saying there's a bit of interest around and Oscar has caught everyone by surprise with his improvement, particularly Alpine. He also has his F1 super licence from winning F3 whereas Zhou does not.
Alpine made a mistake in re-signing Ocon for 3 years.
Wonder if Alpine panicked after Riccardo walked.
Good to see him place well. Had Sainz on his arse for over 15 laps and held him out. The McLarens struggled after they went onto the hard tyres, Norris' butchered pit wouldn't have mattered either way.
I think they did, Ocon certainly improved towards the backend of last season, but to me its quite clear he doesn't have WC winning pace in him. He's nothing more than a number 2 driver in my book. Add to the fact that whilst their junior program is one of the best, Zhou was their top ranked junior last year but still doesn't have his super F1 licence yet, and his age will start to count against him soon. Much more upside to Piastri in this regard as hhe only turned 20 this year and has his F1 licence, but he's just coming on so quickly it has probably caught people offguard.
Ricciardo is hopefully starting to get his act together with McLaren. I've been disappointed at how long it is taking him to come to terms with the car, but his first season with Renault was also similar and it was around this time in 2019 when his performances started to improve. Hungary will be a good test as it's a tighter, slower track which won't suit McLaren as much as others like Ferrari. If Dan can get his car into Q3 there, then he sets himself up well for a decent race hopefully.
It seems to be he takes a year to warm up to a car. He placed much more often in the 2020 season than 2019.
He's only finished outside the 10 twice this year thus far and regularly placing between 5th-7th. I reckon he'll nab a couple of podiums before the year is out.
Hope so mate, the McLaren is capable in the right hands as Norris is showing. Monza should play to the cars strengths, along with Spa.
Would love to see how the McLaren would handle the old 90's Hockenheim layout.
