Fans have right to ire over Cleary: Tigers

Wests Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe admits the NRL club's fans have every right to be annoyed at Ivan Cleary's decision to defect mid-contract to Penrith.

On another busy day on the NRL's coaching merry-go-round, the Tigers confirmed on Sunday that Michael Maguire would replace Cleary as head coach on a three-year deal effective immediately.

Cleary will be announced as Penrith's new coach - joining his playmaker son Nathan at the club that sacked him in 2015 - as early as Monday, after the Tigers granted him a release from the final two years of his contract.

And while internally the joint-venture are ecstatic at securing Maguire, Pascoe conceded fans had a right to be frustrated at Cleary.

"Absolutely," Pascoe told AAP when asked if fans had a right to be annoyed.

"There was a long-term commitment from the club to him and from him to the club. We certainly looked for stability when we made that appointment.

"That was our focus 18 months ago when we appointed Ivan and to be fair there are still two years left on his contract, so I think they've got every right.

"Fans are passionate, they buy into messaging that is out there and fans buy into directions that clubs are taking and a big part of that is the coach. So yeah, absolutely."

In Maguire, the Tigers have got a 2014 premiership-winner with South Sydney who has also won a title with Wigan in the English Super League.

Negotiations between the Tigers and Panthers for Cleary's release are believed to have wrapped up on Friday afternoon, with a payout rumoured to have been part of discussions.

Pascoe was coy on that.

"We're a club that holds ourselves in a professional manner and that commercial discussion will remain behind closed doors," he said.

**"But our focus was to get a favourable outcome for the club both with the hiring of our new coach with credentials, but also get a favourable outcome for the club with the terms of the release of Ivan and that certainly we have got."**

Maguire's appointment marks the first time the Tigers have had a premiership winner join them as coach since Tim Sheens in 2003.

Seven-time premiership winner Wayne Bennett was another potential candidate before agreeing to replace Anthony Seibold at South Sydney.

"The club was on a real path of stability and real growth among many areas. And to be fair Ivan had done a really good job contributing to that," Pascoe said.

"The most pleasing aspect of where we are at today is through this period there has been a significant amount of candidates through their management or themselves reach out and show genuine interest in the club.

"And I'm pretty confident three or four years ago that wouldn't have been the case."

How good have our club been in handling this situation?
I’ve never seen our club act so professionally particularly in a situation as drastic as this.
I hope Pascoe stays with us to help keep building our club.
Well done to him, Go and the board.

Significant upgrade.

I get Cleary is an okay kid but hiring his Dad just to keep him is crazy - Especially when I Cleary really hasn't done much of anything since his 2011 GF appearance with the Warriors.

Pascoe has done a great job with all of this, kept everything in house and ensured we were in a position to get a position outcome. The club can only control their actions and they’ve done well.

Just going to throw this out there. I got a feeling you might have a personal relationship with Maguire. All good, if you do. Just seems a bit weird you’d start following another club given who the coach is.

Agree with that.

Alien would rather live off nothing but steamed veggies for the rest of his life than put the word Tiger in his username.

This is the type of outcome you achieve when you keep things in-house and dont play things out in the media

I recall calls & demands for the club to inform & update fans, set the media straight etc etc

You dont play their game, you stay in control by only saying things when youre ready to say something, not when the media or public want you to.

I like hearing rumours like everyone else , but am impressed with the watertight ship that is running the Tigers these days and Pascoe and Go deserve the highest accolades for their performances

Very happy with how the club has handled this situation. Less happy with Cleary for obvious reasons. He came into the club as a professional - now he leaves the club without his integrity and a distinct lack of professionalism for how he has handled this situation.

Looking forward to 2019 and what Madge and his support staff will bring to the club.

The Penrith Panthers will on Monday announce Ivan Cleary as their coach for the next five seasons, with Panthers chairman Dave O’Neill admitting the coach's release from the Wests Tigers would allow the club to finalise the move.

Wests Tigers announced Cleary's release on Sunday morning, with former South Sydney premiership-winning coach Michael Maguire to take over for at least the next three years.

The Panthers were expecting Cleary to arrive at Penrith in 2021 but that will now be brought forward a couple of years as a result of his position becoming untenable at the Tigers.

"We were pretty confident Ivan would be coming to Penrith in 2021," O'Neill told NRL.com.

"Now that he has been released from the Tigers we can finalise what we need to in the coming days and we’re hopeful that things will escalate and he will be here on November 1 for the start of preseason."

NRL.com understands the Panthers will announce Cleary's signature on Monday, with the coach likely to front the media as early as Tuesday.

How the 2019 Magic Round will work

It had been indicated the Panthers reached a financial settlement with the Wests Tigers in order to trigger the coach's release, but O'Neill insists Penrith haven't coughed up any money to activate Cleary's departure from the Tigers.

It's understood the terms of the compensation were discussed between Cleary and the Tigers.

"I'm not privy to the conversations that were had between them but I can assure you the Panthers haven’t paid any compensation," O'Neill said.

intresting? so did we get compensation or not?
also penrith are the losing party in all this. 5 years is a long time for IC. hope it works out for them tbh. big investment.

Be interesting to look into the crystal ball to see where things are in 12 months time. Lets hope we are in a better place with Madge at the helm.

Why?

I think the club has handled this unwanted transition exceptionally well and come up trumps.
Ivan on the other hand will never be able to claim integrity within the NRL again. He has made a mess. There is the old saying; Be careful what you wish for.

Well done Justin Pascoe ..have questioned him in the past …he has stood up when it countered.. well handled in a big test getting the best possible outcome for Wests Tigers...we can move forward with confidence...

The Dimwit who left us to coach his son will now and forever be thrown into the same basket as the 3 dimwits that left when he got here. I will never say their names again.
